Today’s song is from the film Shri Rambhakta Hanuman-1948.

Looking back, I find that my last post was on Muslim films in India, in which I had discussed the situation rather in details. And now this post immediately on Hindu Mythology !

Sometime back, I had come across a list of unreleased songs of Mohammed Rafi on the internet. The number of such songs were close to 100. A scrutiny of the songs revealed that these were not necessarily unreleased songs. Some songs were from unreleased films which were released later on gramophone records in some cases. Then, there were songs which were composed for released films but were not picturised. Some songs were deleted from films mainly to reduce the length of the films. Some of the songs in the list have already been covered in our Blog.

Today’s song is from the ‘1956’ movie ‘Naqaab Posh’. Another movie from the decade of ‘fifties’ or ‘1951-1960’ where only one song of the same movie has been posted earlier and in this case the first song of this movie ‘Naqaab Posh-1956’ was posted on 28.11.2013.

Today (4 November 2020) is the 91st birth anniversary of Jaikishan Dayabhai Panchal (4 November 1929 – 12 September 1971), one half of the legendary Shankar Jaikishan musical duo. The golden era of HFM started in 1949. Shankar Jaikishan were there right from the beginning. They ruled the roost in HFM for two decades. After that, the duo got separated in unfortunate circumstances, with the untimely death of Jaikishan at the the age of just 41. It is unbelievable but true that he had started at the age of 19 and he had achieved so much by the time he was 41 that the body of his work has gone on the become some of the best and immortal music that the golden era of HFM had given us.

Today’s song is from film Bade Nawab Saheb-44. It was a Muslim social film, produced by Silver films – a joint venture of actors Kumar and Chandra Mohan. The film was directed by Vedi, a name about which I could not get any information except that he was a director from the Silent era. In the Talkie era, he has 4 films to his credit as director. First film is Bade nawab saheb-44, then Naseeb-45, Room Number-9 – 46, and For Ladies only-51. This is all I know about Vedi. Unfortunately, we do come across few such names from the early era films. This is because we have very poor documentation. Information on big actors etc is available. That is why the task of Hindi film History students (like me, for example) is tough in securing and recording information for the posterity.

I have actively looked for songs on ‘dheere dheere’ theme and have found a few good songs from 50’s decade. In this process, I found many songs which suit this theme and are already posted, apart from some famous songs which I had listed in an earlier post of this series.

Hullo Atuldom

“Duplicate” (release date 8/5/1998) was a movie that we went to see as a family because it had Shahrukh Khan in the lead. Those were times when we used to pick-and-choose movies which had decent or fun songs and some actor of our liking and we could take the children along. Thus we ended up seeing this ‘not-so-great’ story-wise film which was produced by Yash Johar and directed by Mahesh Bhatt. It had music by Anu Malik and lyrics were by Javed Akhtar. Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Kumar Sanu, Abhijeet Bhattacharya, Udit Narayan and Shankar Mahadevan were the singers used. This was one of the cassette tapes that I had purchased as the kids loved its songs. Personally speaking, I enjoyed the movie as it was inane, illogical and simply masaledaar Bollywood stuff. The kind which helps us to forget ourselves during the duration of its screening.

Yearwise discussion of Lata Mangeshkar songs in HFM: Part VI: Year 1952
———————————————————————————————————

I had mentioned that Lata Mangeshkar reached the peak of her HFM singing career in 1951 (statistically that is) in the sense that she sang as many as 223 songs in movies released in 1951. She would never be able to exceed this tally in future, though she came close to this figure in future years on a few occasions.
