There have been two Hindi movies with the title “Ustaad Pedro” that were released in 1951 and 1971 respectively.
These two movies had the same title because they were produced by the same man viz Sheikh Mukhtar and he had played the title role in both the movies. One can easily guess that this story line was close to his heart so he decided to repeat the same story line with the very same movie title. Seeing that there was a 20 year gap between the two movies, the actors in the 1971 necessarily had to be different.
“Ustaad Pedro”(1971) was produced by Sheikh Mukhtar and directed by Chaand for Time Life Films, Bombay. The movie had Sheikh Mukhtar, Meena Roy, Jeewan, Padma Khannaa, Asha Nadkarni, Kundan, Raka, Shyam Kumar, Helen, Junior Mehmood, Master Dingu, Sadiq, Hameed, Kaku, Fazlu, Bihari, B A Baghi, Anil Dutt (new face) etc in it. One can notice that the lead actress in this movie was someone called Meena Roy. Few people have any idea who she was. In contrast, the lead actress of “Ustaad Pedro”(1951) was a famous actress of her time viz Begam Para.

‘The Gold Medal’ (1984) was produced by Sham Behl under his banner, Time Films and was directed by Ravi Nagaich. The cast included Jeetendra and Raakhi in the lead roles supported by Shatrughan Sinha, Premnath, Bindu, Faryal, Jaishree T, David, K N Singh, Raja Pranjpe, Sundar, Janakidas, Keshav Rana, Jagdish Raj, Gulshan Bawra. Brahm Bhardwaj, Prabhu Dayal, Madhumati etc. Dharmendra made a ‘priceless’ appearance in the film as an union leader. The film belongs the genre of ‘James Bond’ type of spy thriller in the Indian setting.
The film seems to be in the making for a long time. It is said that the film was planned sometime in the second half of 1960s with Rajendra Kumar and Saira Banu in the lead roles. Incidentally, film’s producer, Sham Behl (elder brother of producer, Ramesh Behl) is the brother-in-law of Rajendra Kumar. Later, the lead pair was changed to Jeetendra and Raakhi and shooting of the film commenced in 1969.

Mukesh and his NFS – 06
I was in a bit of dilemma, whether to include this post under Composers or NFS series.
I settled for NFS because Mukesh strangely has no film songs for the composer but has 4 NFS. We are talking about composer Iqbal.
Well, it is easy to jump to conclusion that it is Iqbal Qureshi. However, Iqbal and Iqbal Qureshi are two entirely different composers working almost during the same period.

Hullo Atuldom
Wishing all the followers of the blog a Happy Dassehra. Happy Vijayadashmi. A day which is the culmination of the Sharada Navaratri. Navaratri means nine nights & Vijayadashmi is the 10th day when all the festivities reach a finale.
Much of North India would have had Raam-Leela as part of the festivities & we will witness Ravan-Dahan on the 10th day.
In West India we have the Devi installed in the form of Ambemaa with Aarthis, Garba & Dandiya forming the part of celebrations. Recently, I learnt that the Dandiya-sticks are representative of the weapons that were used by Ambemaa (Durga Maa) in her battle against the Rakshasaa “Mahishasura”.

‘Manzilein Aur Bhee Hain’ (1974) was produced by Johny Bakshi and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt who also wrote the story. The dialogues were written by the veteran theatre personality, Satyadev Dube. The cast included Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan in the lead roles supported by Gulshan Arora, Purnima, Sudhir, Mac Mohan, Mukesh Bhatt, Shah Durrani, Kirti Kumar, Viju Khote, Ranvir Raj, Uma Dutt etc. Both Johny Bakshi and Mahesh Bhatt made their debuts as producer and director, respectively. Both had known each other while working for Raj Khosla as Assistant Director/Production Controller.
The film was completed in 1972 but ran into problems with Censor Board for about 15 months. In an interview, Mahesh Bhatt revealed that for Censor Board, the film’s two fugitives’ polyandrous relationship with a woman who is their partner in crime amounted to undermining the institution of marriage. Finally, the film got the Censor Certificate on August 13, 1974, as an ‘Adult’ film with cuts. The film had a limited theatrical released on September 27, 1974. The VCD of the film I watched, has a 2016 Censor Certificate with major cuts to make it fit for public viewing under parental guidance. The theme of the film is that there are alternative paths to becoming a criminal who lives under the constant fear of death.

We know that S D Burman sang about 150 Bengali NFSs in the beginning of his career. Most of them became very popular. In Hindi, the number is about 25. We have 5 of them on the blog.
Today on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, here is a lesser known SDB song. I couldn’t get much detail. Looks like it must have been recorded in the year 1948, in the days following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. However some sources on internet mention the year as 1960 for this. Also this seems to be album containing more songs and titled as ‘Gun Dhaam Hamaare Gandhi jee’. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and its details please.
