Hullo Atuldom

Let us all wish the Baadshah of Bollywood on his 54th birthday.

Wish this was an audio post, then I would have started my post with what we used to hear on the radio Ads in the 70s and 80s. I would have first played a line “aashiq hoon main qaatil bhi hoon” then after the voice over by a Vijay Behl or Ameen Sayani or a Vinod Sharma or it could be Harish Bhimani (I don’t remember the names of all the announcers, sorry) the Radio Ad would have closed with the repeat of the last line of the mukhda of the song – “Baadshah o baadshah, baadshah hey baadshah, baadshah”.

For the general Hindi film audience, Suchitra Sen (real name: Roma Dasgupta) is synonymous with her lead roles in ‘Bambai Ka Babu’ (1960) with Dev Anand, ‘Mamta’ (1966) with Ashok Kumar and ‘Aandhi’ (1975) with Sanjeev Kumar. The second category of audience with academic interest in Hindi films will add four more of her Hindi films – ‘Devdas’ (1955) in the role of Paro with Dilip Kumar, ‘Musafir’ (1957) with Shekhar, ‘Champakali’ (1957) with Bharat Bhushan and ‘Sarhad’ (1960) with Dev Anand. Those in the latter category of Hindi film buffs would also know that Suchitra Sen worked in many Bengali films and the Bengali film audience loved to watch their favourite on-screen couple, Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar.

Today’s song is from a film Mangalsootra-1947.

In Maharashtra, from the 19th century onwards, theatre dramas became popular. They were the sole source of entertainment for the family. The stage dramas developed to a great extent, till about the 20’s decade of the twentieth century, when they faced their first competition – in the form of Silent films. However those films being silent, they could not compete wholly with dramas, which provided dialogues, living people on stage and above all music in the dramas.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 49
——————————————————————————————

OK, so a norm need not always be effected. In my previous post of this series, I had mentioned in the beginning that – “The blog was in its childhood –”. On 29th October of 2009, the departure was that only one song was posted. Ah yes, sometimes it used to happen even then. One song has become kind of a norm these days. 🙂

The solo song that day was from the film ‘Pehli Jhalak’ of 1954. The film had made its debut that day with philosophical song “Zameen Chal Rahi Aasmaan Chal Raha Hai” in the voice of Hemant Kumar. Music is by C Ramchandra and the lyrics are from the pen of Rajinder Krishan.
