May 5th 1978 was a most awaited day for an Amitabh Bachchan fan. That day his latest movie Trishul got released. Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Adalat and Khoon Pasina had been released in the preceding years and had proved to be super-duper hits. Amitabh Bachchan’s distinctive “positioning” as the “angry young man” in the rather cluttered world of Bollywood heroes was firmly established. That the above-mentioned movies were interspersed with blockbusters like Kabhi Kabhie (romantic hero) and Amar Akbar Anthony (comedian) only helped to intensify the hero’s aura among his fans.

Two songs from this movie have already been posted on this blog, and Atul has gone public with his negative views on the movie. He found the movie too contrived, too silly even. Maybe he has a point of view, but may I present the alternate view.

In this blog I have posted songs that fall into various categories. These days I am finding that there are some songs of a certain (artificial) category namely “songs that I thought were already posted but I was wrong”.

Satyam Shivam Sundaram

This title song of “Satyam Shivam Sundaram” has at least two versions. The song itself is quite popular to this day. Its picturisation is another matter. The critics those days panned Raj Kapoor for using this movie to show Zeenat Aman’s body at every opportunity, which in the view of the critics was against the Indian ethos.

“Toote Khilaune” (1978) was a flop movie and rightly so. Who in his right minds would like to go and buy tickets to watch nobodies like Shekhar Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in lead roles ? Neither I nor anybody else, of course.

Bappi Lahiri is today remembered as the person who triggered degradation of Bollywood music with his “disco” music. But that is not how he began his career. Bappi Lahiri began his career by composing some outstanding music in his initial movies, viz “Zakhmee” (1975), “Chalte Chalte” (1976) etc.

“Muqaddar Ka Sikandar” (1978) was one movie which was a very popular movie of its time. It was one of the biggest hits of Amitabh Bachchan post “Sholay” and its music was ofcourse one of the biggest attractions.

People of my generation were aware of a Hindi movie called “College Girl” (1978) which had a hit Kishore Kumar song, viz. Pyaar maanga hai tumhi se na inkaar karo. Old generation music lovers though were more aware of another movie of the same name that was released in 1960. This movie, viz. “College Girl” (1960) had several nice songs sung by Rafi in it.

“Badaltey Rishtey” (1978) was released to a lukewarm response and the movie did not do well at the box office. Of course there is no correlation between a movie’s box office performance and its production values. The story of this movie was different from the usual “dhishum dhishum” stuff of those days. From what one can see from the title of this movie and from the songs, this movie was a story on a love triangle or something similar where Reena Roy have two suitors competing for her.

“Devtaa” (1978) was a small budget off beat movie with Sanjeev Kumar and Shabana Azmi in lead roles. The movie itself did reasonably well with its small target audience, and then the movie was forgotten.
