Today (24 november) is Amol Palekar’s 67th birthday. Unlike most other heroes, who played larger than life characters in movies, Amol Palekar played the roles of a man next door who has problems and worries like the rest of us. And that is what helped him get his fan following among movie watchers who were intested in watching simple uncomplicated movies.

Today (19 august) is Utpal Dutt’s death anniversary. Utpal Dutt was typically known to play the role of an idiosyncratic oldie. During early 1980s, he got somewhat typed cast as a lecherous old man eyeing women greedily. He played such roles in movies like “Naram Garam” (1981) and “Shaukeen” (1982). In “Shaukeen”, he had company of like minded oldtimers viz Ashok Kumar and A K Hangal, but he was on his own in “Naram Garam” (1981).

Today, the 18th of August, is the 76th birthday of Gulzar saab.
And, as I type 76th, I can’t help feeling that 1936 must have been a very special year. If I were selling wine and comparing Hindi film personalities with wine, I think I’d say 1936 could be right up there for best year for vintage wine of the 20th century. 🙂

I remembered that Kishore Kumar was the singer and most probably it was by Laxmikant Pyarelal, and that it was a funny song performed on stage by Amol Palekar. I vaguely remembered something like ‘gangaram’ and ‘totaram’ in the lyrics. So what did i do. I googled it. And presto ! i had the words “gangaram kanwara reh gayaa”. Then it was just a matter of finding a video link in Youtube, which was easy.
