Indians in the past decades tended to suffer from low self esteem, because India as a country was a “developing nation”, a euphemism for a poor and underdeveloped nation. It was not uncommon for movies to reflect that. Tragedy movies did well at the box office. The hero typically would get bashed up at the hands of the villain throughout the movie.

Today (21 july) is the birthday of Anand Bakshi (21 july 1920-30 march 2002). He was one of the most prolific lyricists in the annals of Hindi movie music. This blog has 466 songs written by him. The most prolific decade for Anand Bakshi was the decade of 1970s, which was also the decade that I grew up in.

Rajesh Khanna (29 december 2012-18 july 2012) is no more. He breathed his last yesterday. He was just 69 years of age. He was ailing for a few months but we thought that his ailment was nothing more than routine age related problems that everyone with advancing age has to face.

Dil ki baat kahin lab pe na aa jaaye

When I was growing up in 1970s then I had propounded a theory about the actors and movie makers of Hindi movies. My thoery was that the movie makers needed to take the movie going janta for a ride by serving them fare that they liked. In cruder terms, movie going public had to be fooled into partonising their movies. And the movie makers needed to be on their toes because it was obviously not possible to keep serving them the same fare.
