‘Khaakaan’ from 1965 is a film I have never heard about before. Given the star cast, with Dara Singh in the lead, it definitely must have been a B grade costume action drama, that probably would have made the rounds of the B cinema circuit, and then went away. This is a song that I have heard on the radio many many years ago, and its melody and memories have remained with me all these years, without really knowing anything about its antecedents. A few names do stand out as films easily remembered, viz., Chandrakanta, Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke, Dharamputra, Saadhna, Dhool Ka Phool, Black Cat, Bhai Bahen, Didi, Naya Raasta etc.

In 1970s, when I was growing up as a pre teen kid, I had noticed that Gulshan Nanda was the most popular Hindi novelist. His novels were read by all grown ups. Kids were not supposed to read such grown up stuff. Being a precocious and eager kid, I managed to read a few Gulshan Nanda novels even then and I loved the novels. I wonder what was low brow in these novels (as alleged by literary magaziones of those days).
