Today 10th January’2024 is the eighty-fourth birthday of Legendary Singer Yesudas. On this occasion we wish him a very happy birthday and healthy and peaceful life ahead. I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.

Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 12
———————————————————-

This particular ghazal, as some other Mirza Ghalib ghazals, has been sung by various singers.  Some of the famous renditions by KL Sehgal Sb, Suraiyya and also by Jaddanbai are already posted in the blog:

Another rendition of the golden era is yet to find its way into the blog, so here is the Rafi Sahab rendition.  This is a very small simple ghazal with only the four sha’irs being rendered.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 13
————————————————

When the blog’s train reached 9th March of 2009, ten years ago, one of the songs posted that day was from the 1980 film ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’.  Till that point, it was the third song posted for this film. Today, after a gap of 10 years, the fourth song of this film finds its place here.  Wow, ten years it took – and none of us thought of looking at this film again during these years.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 07
—————————————————

I remember during the radio days, whenever a non filmy song programme would start, we would shut down the radio.  Now it was time to play or to do some study seriously or even watch TV.  The time for all of these things was limited.  Entertainment was available only on its time with fixed hours and no more, because even if we were free the friends will be called home and play time was over.  Time spend with friends in the colony playing or just doing gup-shup was precious.

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
tera wajood hai sirf dastaan ke liye

palat ke su-e-chaman dekhne se kya hogaa
wo shaakh hi na rahi jo thhi aashiyaan ke liye

garaz paarast jahaan mein wafaa talaash na kar
ye shai bani hai kisi dusre jahan ke liye

Thus wrote Sahir Ludhianvi for the film ‘Daastaan’ (1972). Here he takes a cue from Allama Iqbal who said ….

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
jahaan hai tere liye tu nahin jahaan ke liye

Ever the cynic….

“Love is so short, forgetting is so long” – ah, this quote by Pablo Neruda! How true it is!! So simple yet so profound. . .  Don’t we all agree?
