When a cricketer hits a fast paced century (in any form of the game), that is stuff for headlines. Newspapers will carry that item on front page. (Btw fastest century record is held by Shahid Afridi, scoring an ODI century in 37 balls; for test cricket Vivian Richards with a century in 56 balls.)
We have stuff for a similar headline news on this blog. We have a new record for the fastest century of songs. Welcome to the 4200th offering of what is increasingly becoming a misnomer, Song-A-Day blog. With an average of over 7 songs posted per day, the musical journey from 4101 to 4200 has been covered in 14 days flat. This beats the previous record of 16 days. Congratulations ALL. 😀

O P Nayyar style of music was quite popular and influential in late 1950s. Not just O P Nayyar, even other established music directors often created songs that sounded so similar to O P Nayyar music.

From 1970 onwards, we saw many examples of star sons being launched in Hindi movies by their parents with movies tailormade for them. The general memory of the 1969 movie, Saat Hindustaani, is linked to the fact that it was the debut movie for Amitabh Bachhan. However, in my mind, this movie is more associated with the writer director Khwaja Ahmed Abbas or KA Abbas. The Wikipeadia page on Abbas Saab contains very interesting information about this personality, e.g. fact like his family tree is traced back to Ayub Ansari, a close associate of Prophet Mohammed, and that his grandfather was one of the prominent soldiers in the 1857 uprising against the Britishers and a martyr, sentenced to be blown on a cannon, and that Abbas Saab is the great great great grandfather of Shahid Kapoor. Besides these familial facts, Abbas Saab has been a prolific writer and journalist, and a noted story writer and film maker in Hindi Cinema. His column ‘Last Page’ in ‘Blitz’, the Bombay based newspaper, ran from 1935 to 1987, the longest running column in the history of Indian journalism. He wrote 73 books in Hindi, Urdu and English, and is considered as one of the premier Urdu short story writers of the 20th century.

Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

“Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai” (1967) is a movie which I tended to confuse with “Jab Pyaar Kisi Se Hota Hai” (1961). Not any longer, I hope.

Most music lovers love to listen to light songs and run away from songs based on classical music. I certainly belonged to that category of music lovers who ran away a mile from classical music.
