Today’s song is a Manna Dey NFS.
We have just completed 2 years without the Ace Singer, Manna Dey. He left us on 24-10-2013. He was probably the last of the Golden Age male singers, who started singing in the 40s. I called him an Ace singer and most readers would agree with it too, but Manna Dey never got rated as the No 1, or 2 or 3 or even 4th singer. Every A grade composer agreed that he was a great singer, but no one would call him to sing a song, on a regular basis. Though Manna Dey sang for almost every composer of his times, he was neither a favourite of any Music Director, nor did any top actor insist for him as a playback singer of his choice. So, strangely, while recognition was there, results were not matching !

Today is 28 september 2015, a red letter day for HFM because it is the birthday of Lata Mangeshkar today who was born this day in 1929. The most shining jewel of a musically illustrius family, it goes withut saying that she has dominated Hindi playback singing for the last six decades or so. Many of the songs that have become integral parts of our daily lives as well as parts of our lives during special occasions have been sung by her.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 13 # Duet-2 – Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey
—————————————————————
Here is a pleasant duet sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey from the 1975 Film ‘Chaitaali’.
I do not remember this movie now, but I think that I had watched it on ‘Doordarshan’ during early nineties.
As per information available in HFGK this is a Bimal Roy Productions presentation (produced by Mrs.Monabai Roy as per info on Wikipedia), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 7
—————————————————–
I remember such sellers from my travels in childhood. It was a time when intercity travel of half a day or less would be a journey by bus, and a longer journey would be by train. Both my maternal and paternal families are spread out over the Punjab and Himachal areas north of Delhi – Chandigarh, Simla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar. All these cities being less than a day’s journey, our travels were generally by the intercity state transport buses. Any other travels, like visiting other metropolitan cities which are all south of Delhi, would generally be by train. During my school years, travel to visit family was quite a regular affair, once or twice a year during vacation breaks. Other travels, to places like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Bangalore were less frequent.
