S D Burman was not only an outstanding music director, he was also a singer with a unique singing style and his songs, though few in numbers, have the ability to touch the heart strings of the listeners almost without fail.

In Bollywood movies, singing any kind of songs is mostly the preserve of Hero and Heroine. One important category of songs that they sing is love songs. There too, some conventions have been set. For instance, the love songs would be sung in a very upscale dignified way, with refined sophisticated lyrics and the two characters acting in a socially acceptable way viz acting coy and restrained.

During my childhood, I got to hear lots of loudspeaker songs ( viz songs blaring out of loudspeakers) where no details of movies, lyrics and music directors were available. Of course that did not prevent one from enjoying these songs. But since these details were not known, one forgot these songs as they stopped being played on loudspeakers.

Do lafzon ki hai dil ki kahaani

“The Great Gambler” was an Amitabh Bachchan movie that was pronounced a damp squib when it was released in 1979. That came as a surprise to me because I found it a more watchable movie than many of the supposedly successful Amitabh Bachchan movies like “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”, “Suhaag” etc.

“Raja” (1975) was a movie starring Rishi kapoor and Sulakshana Pandit. Few people ( including me) were aware of the existence of this movie. I was of course aware about the songs without knowing which movie these songs were from.
