Blog 10-Year Challenge (2011-2021) – Song No. 19
———————————————————————————–
This date ten years ago (viz 31 March 2011) was a thursday and a working day. On looking back at the posts in the blog, I notice that four songs from four different movies were covered on that day. It was slow going by the standards of the blog those days. The first post of the day appeared at 10:58 AM and the fourth and final post at 1:12 PM. So it appears that this day ten years ago was a day when I could not devote much time for blogging. My guess is that I was journeying on this day in the morning and I arrived at Nagpur (my base) in the morning at around 10 AM and that is when I started blogging for the day.

Blog post number Song Movie (Year) Remarks
3713 Jo dard banke zamaane pe chhaaye jaate hain Parbat Pe Apna Deraa(1944) Posted at 10:58 AM. 5 songs (out of 9) covered by now
3714 Tirulila Tirulila Tirulila la Daman(1951) Posted at 11:28 AM. 8 songs out of 10 covered by now.
3715 Nashe mein jo daulat ke ham dagmagaaye Sitaaraa(1955) Posted at 11:56 AM. 8 songs out of 10 covered by now
3716 Sune na koi man ki vyathhaa Subhadra Haran(1964) Debut song of the movie. Posted at 1:12 PM. Debut of the movie. One song out of 6 covered so far.

One can see that all four movies whose songs were covered on that day are unYIPPEED to this date and so they all are eligible for Blog Ten Year Challenge today.

Today’s song is from a less known Mythological film, from a decade which had not given many religious films – the 40’s. The film is Uttara Abhimanyu-1946.

In the decade of the 40s, few films were made on religious subjects – compared to the 30s or the 50s. But it is also true that the few such films made in the 40s, like Bharat Milap-42 and Ram Rajya-43, underlined the fact that there was plenty of scope for such films and this fructified in the 50’s decade, which can be called as ” The Golden period of Religious Films”, after it churned out the maximum ever – 124 – Mythological films in 10 years’ time.

Today’s song is a comedy song from a Costume/Action film “Jungle ka Jawahar”-52. The film was a production from Basant Pictures, owned by producer/Director Homi Wadia. In 1942, brothers JBH Wadia and Homi Wadia separated from each other on a very important point. The elder brother JBH Wadia was of the opinion that the life of the action-stunt films is a short one. He firmly believed that the market for action films will dry up within the next 10-15 years, hence the company should change over to Social films.

Today’s song, rather a beautiful Bhajan, is from the film Bhagwat Mahima-55. Earlier 3 songs/Bhajans of this film are discussed here, so it will be the 4th Bhajan from this film to appear here.

The film was made by Filmistan. It was directed by a veteran All-rounder Vithaldas Panchotiya and the music was composed by Hemant kumar- who was famous for creating Bhajans in films.

These uplifiting lines are from the pen of Saraswati Kumar Deepak. The poetry composed sometimes in the early 1950s, was presented as a song in the 1953 film ‘Naya Raasta’. Saraswati Kumar Deepak is a song writer who has been confined to mythological and religious fare for most of his career. Active in the Hindi cinema since 1943, his songs can be heard in films all the way to the end of 1970s.

Missing Films of 1960s – 107

The film that is being introduced today is ‘Lav Kush’ from 1967. It was a time when mythological and religious films were still a draw – a draw enough for producers to continue producing this genre of films. It was a crop of artists, producers and financiers who held sway in the decades from the early years of Indian cinema, till maybe 1980s. Beyond that, once that crop withered away – passing away, retiring, or just plain fatigue, this genre of films has seen only a downward slide.

Missing Films of 1960s – 95
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We come to a very interesting episode of this series. The film I pick for today is ‘Koi Ghulam Nahin’ from 1970. The Geet Kosh listings say that the film has 6 songs, and all of them have been released on 78 rpm gramophone records. As I checked my own collection, I find that all the six songs are available. Just to check, I also went online and discovered that two songs are available on the YouTube. And very interestingly, one of them turns out to be a video. And a very interesting video at that. The song is sung by Rafi Sb, and is performed on screen by MG Ramachandran (MGR), the super star of South Indian cinema.
