“Shaan” (1980) was a movie directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by Sippy Films. Music was by Rahul Dev Burman and Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. The credits of the movie show a dancer shaking herself to Usha Uthup’s singing and Mohd. Rafi is credited as late Mohd. Rafi. (The release date of the movie was 12 Dec 1980.) Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Usha Mangeshkar and RD were the other singers.
Amitabh Bachchan- Shashi Kapoor- Shatrughan Sinha were the male lead with Sunil Dutt being credited as special appearance. Rakhee- Parveen Babi- Bindiya Goswami were the female lead with Helen and Bindu putting in guest appearances. Johnny Walker headed the supporting cast and Mazhar Khan made his debut in this movie and Kulbhushan Kharbanda got his first villain role, though the movie didn’t do the same wonders for him as Ramesh Sippy’s previous “Sholay” did for Amjad Khan. Salim- Javed were the script writers. The movie was of the typical-Bollywood-masala genre. Sunil Dutt played an upright cop with Amitabh and Shashi as his time-wasting, happy-go-lucky, “naalaayak” brothers who are jolted to being responsible persons when their brother gets gruesomely-murdered. Then the movie follows standard lines of the brothers seeking out the villain with the help of Shatru and entering the villain’s den in disguise as folk dancers etc. in between all this they also find time to con a few people, fall in love with the heroines, have lover’s tiffs (roothna manana etc.) That gives scope for around six/ seven songs in the movie of which two are love songs, one a club dance, etc. etc.

When one talks of star pairings during the golden era of Hindi movies, one thinks of “A grade” star pairings like Raj Kapoor-Nargis, Dilip Kumar- Madhubala, Dilip Kumar-Meena Kumari, Dev Anand- Waheeda Rehman etc. But there were other pairs too, that would be signed up by smaller budget movie makers, like for instance, Ashok Kumar- Nirupa Roy, Kishore Kumar-Vyjyanti Mala etc.

hullo Atuldom
Day before yesterday I sat through a movie called “Suhana Safar” looking for a suitable song to wish Sharmila Tagore on her birthday which is this week, made a few mental notes etc. Then I went for a short walk, returned and switched back on to the net to check cricket score etc and the first thing that I saw – an announcement on yahoo’s home page “Shashi Kapoor passes away after prolonged illness at a Mumbai hospital at the age of 79”. My first reaction- “oh no!” Then I thought let me see if atulites have got the news and I saw that our Rajaji had just broken the news there.

“Imaan Dharam” (1977) was a Suchitra Films Production. It was produced by Premji and directed by Desh Mukherji.
This movie was written by Salim Javed and it had a multistarrer cast including Sanjeev Kumar, Amithabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Rekha, Aparna Sen, Helen, Utpal Dutt, M.B.Shetty, Amrish Puri, Mohan Sherry, Amar Nath, A.K.Hangal, Prem Chopra, Om Shiv Puri, Dr.Shree Ram Lagoo, Sudhir, C.S.Dube, Raj Kishore, Mac Mohan, Kamal Deep, Baby Rani, Jagdish Raj, Kumu Tripathi, Satyen Kappu, Sajjan, Gajanan Jagirdar, Pinchoo Kapoor etc in it.

Today is 24th December 2016 -92nd birth anniversary of Mohammad Rafi.
At first I thought I would not be able to do a post which does justice to the persona of Mohd Rafi. Even now I am not trying to; all that I am doing is bringing to the blog a song which shows the vocal range that Rafisaab was gifted with. And this is not a super classical song but a fun song which one would normally expect Rafi to sing for Shammi Kapoor. But today’s song is for Shashi Kapoor and one should be excused if there is a feeling of the song being a Shankar- Jaikishan creation. Why? Because the director duo of this song were once music arrangers & assistants for Shankar Jaikishan.
