This article is the 19800th song post in the blog. This article also marks the 300th duet of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle in the blog.

Blog Day :

6384 Post No. : 19800

That occasion is here again. The occasion when we reach a blog century post and then start wondering which song to cover as the century song. This time, I had a genneral idea that which artists should figure in the sopng. Apart from that, I was just as unprepared for the occasion as I generally am whenever a blog century appears. Acting at the eleventh hour and 59th minute has become aa hit with me it seems. 🙂

I was very clear in my mind (and this clarity came to me when the blog was still some 50 songs short of this century) that the song has to be a duet of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. The reason was that together these two prolific and popular singers had as many as 295 duets in the blog and I wanted the blog century to coincide with their 300th duet in the blog.

I think most regulars will agree that the best duets sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle are already showcased in the blog. Take a sample of their songs that are already covered in the blog :-

We can see that the above list (which is indicative not exhaustive) is full of all time classic duets that have already been covered in the blog. Most of them were covered during the earlier days of the blog itself.

Seeing that most great Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duets were already covered in the blog, finding a suitable duet for the occasion was a tall order for me. I have looked at more than thirty as yet uncovered duets. They were all very good songs, but somehow I was not satisfied in my mind that they suited the occasion. After spending considerable time looking at over thirty songs, I finally decided that I had a suitable song from the occasion. This song, like most Kishore Kumar- Ashha Bhonsle songs listed above, is an all time popular song. There are some other all time popular songs by them in the same era but I did not pick them for various reasons, such as picturisation not upto the mark, the music sounding repetitive etc.

The song that I have picked is a great song to listen to, and a great song to watch. This song appears like a great example to team work. This kind of song situation have been seen quite a few times during the time when this song came up, and so it was a challenge for lyricists to come up with lyrics that would do justice to the song sitution. It must be said that the lyricist has come up with lyrics that were so catchy that the song quickly caught public imagination and the song became a very popular song on loudspeakers.

If one watched the picturisation, one realised that the people who were incharge of picturisation had left no stones (in this case kalse) unturned in getting the song picturised in a grand manner. Water vessels (Kalse) are the major attrackting of the picturisation. An enourmous number of kalse are arranged in different patterns as the song proceeds.

The song begins with female dancers standing in two columns. They throw kalash held by them into sky towards the femaledancersstanding on the opposite column, who catch then expertly like good cricket fielders, and the throw them back from where they came. All this while Sri Devi runs between the two columns, with such good timing that her run does not interrupt the kash throwing that is going on.

When the song begins, Jeetendra and Sri Devi are seen performing various PT exercises that passes for dance. 🙂 Yes, that is what I noticed about the dance movements of the lead pair. 🙂

Overall, it is great singing and great picturisation that keeps the music lovers enthralled throughout the song.

So, here is the 19800th song in the blog which also happens to be the 300th Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet in the blog.

The movie is “Tohfa”(1984). It was produced by D Ram Naidu and directed by K Raghavendra Rao for Suresh Productions, Madras. The movie had Jeetendra, Sridevi, Jayaprada, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Mohan Choti, Urmila Bhatt, Leela Mishra, Jagdeep, Aruna Irani, Jayshree T, Master Rinku etc. Asrani was also there in a friendly appearance.

Tohfa had five songs in it. Two songs have been covered in the blog.

While covering a previous song from this movie, I had commented that Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle had the ability to make an otherwise ordinary song with average lyrics sound wonderful. In a way, they were keeping the standard of HFM high with their singing even though the quality of lyrics and music was going down after 1980s.

Here is a great song from post golden era of HFM that was as good as those composed during the golden era. A song fit to be the 19800th song in the blog and also a song fit to be the 300th Kishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsle duet in the blog.

So we will again take fresh guard and will continue remoselessly in our onward musical journey. Here is hoping that we continue to reach many more destinations in our journey and we continue to find many hidden and forgotten musical gems along the way.

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their support and encouragement that keeps this musical bandwagon going on and on. We are now just 200 songs short of the magic figure of 20000. A mind boggling figure, but one that is within striking distance.

‘Solvaan Saawan’ (1978) was produced by A.S.R. Anjaneyulu and was directed by Bharthi Rajaa. The cast included Amol Palekar, Sridevi, Adil Amaan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sajjan, Madhukar, Deena Pathak, Savita Bajaj, Vijayalakshmi, Rajeshwari etc. The film was Bharathi Rajaa’s first foray in Hindi films as a director. This was Sridevi’s first Hindi film in a lead role. The film was entirely shot in Jharkhand in a month’s time in rural region. Hence, it was decided to write dialogues with a mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri languages. The film got a very limited theatrical release on January 22, 1979.

YouTube is an American social media and online video sharing platform owned by Google. It is an amazing tool that helps us in our blogging expedition. Based on our previous search history, it keeps suggesting links to videos.

That means, for followers of ATULSONGADAY, YouTube will keep suggesting videos of Hindi Fillum Sangeet. The suggestions may also be based on any particular actor, movie or artist, specially if we have looked up for songs of the concerned artist.

So, as I was browsing through YouTube yesterday, I came across a song which had Sunny Deol trying to shake a leg in tandem with Sridevi for a song that was playbacked (I am sure there is no such word in the English dictionary) by Suresh Wadkar and Asha Bhosle. It had Meenakshi Seshadri & Anil Kapoor, standing among the people who were watching the proceedings. On looking up for details, on our blog of course, I found that it has found its place on the blog in 2022 with this post by Avinashji.

Pancham’s Music – Eighties (1981-1990)

Today 27th June’2024 is the birth anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman. On this occasion we are paying our tributes to him by posting some of the songs composed by him.

For the last few years I have been regularly listening to songs composed by R.D. Burman on radio or on playlist recorded in a pen-drive. It is always a pleasure to listen to the songs composed by Pancham as many RD Burman songs composed by him are my favourites. Listening to his well known songs as well as songs that I was not aware of is a new experience now. I during my growing up years may not have been able to discern the nuances of his music, including music created through unconventional ‘instruments’.

Hullo Atuldom

I must say that I am spoilt with choices for a song to go with this post. I checked our blog’s “List Of Songs- Moviewise” page and I can see many eligible movies whose song can be used.

I think I will take the easy way out and settle for one of the movies from the 1980s whose most differently (hatke as filmfolk would like to say) romantic song is yet to arrive on the blog. This song shows how beautiful a simple sari-clad lady can look. Post this every actress worth her name was ready to drape a saree and romance the camera on the condition that it gave them as much fame as the lady in this Sky-Blue saree achieved. Of course, through the 100+ years of Indian cinema, a saree was considered sign of a Bharatiya (to be understood as domesticated) Nari. There were the odd songs or situations where the lady used to get wet & the wet-saree would make the villain lust after her or the hero would get passionate with her (depending on who is with the lady in the scene).

“Chaandni” (1989) from the Yashraj Films stable was produced and directed by Yash Chopra. It starred Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Anupam Kher, Sushma Seth, Mita Vashisht, Anant Mahadevan, Manohar Singh, and Waheeda Rehman and Achala Sachdev in guest appearances. It was the story of Chandni Mathur a young effervescent young lady unsure of her emotions for two gentle men.

This was Yash Chopra’s return to his formula of love stories with good music, locales, and heavy dose of emotions and sentiments. It was very successful and also confirmed Sridevi’s position as a super actress.

It had songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by Shiv-Hari. Lata Mangeshkar, Suresh Wadkar, Jolly Mukherjee, Nitin Mukesh, Vinod Rathod, Anupama Deshpande (the humming in the song ‘lagi aaj saawan ki phir woh jhadi hain’), Asha Bhonsle, Babla etc. were the playback singers There is even a Kishore Kumar song in the movie which had 9 songs and the blog has 7 of these.

The above is what I had written on this date, last year, in the post remembering Sridevi. I must apologize for making a wrong statement in there- “Sorry there is no Kishore Kumar song in this film. The song which I thought was by Kishoreda was actually ‘bani tu meri mehbooba’ and it was in Vinod Rathod’s voice”.
