Today’s song is from a social family drama- Bhai Saheb-1954. I have not seen this film, but as per Wiki and IMDB, the story revolves around a kind and talented man who works in Radio as a counselor for needy people and solves their problems by his means, which has a positive response. He falls in love with a sweet girl and wants to marry her but first he must complete the task of reuniting other individuals, leading to consequences. The story is not very attractive or different from normal love stories. As compared to the other musical and entertaining films of 1954, this film was actually nowhere.
The 50’s decade was called the Golden Era of HFM, not for nothing. Year after year, the films provided excellent songs, different film Genres, convincing stories, superb acting and Full Paisa Vasool Entertainment. In such a scenario an average music, beaten track stories, mediocre acting, poor direction and lustreless short lived songs had no chance of winning. Today’s film was one such film.

Today’s song is from the social film Naya Kadam-1958.
“Naya” is one of the popular title words of the filmmakers in Hindi films. As many as 40 films were made, having the starting word as Naya- from Naya Aadmi to Naya Zamana, during the period of 1935 to 2009. Not to be left behind, even films having titles starting with Nayi, Nayee or Nai, there were as many as 29 films !
Film Naya kadam-1958 was not a very successful film in 1958, as the year was replete with many entertaining films. It was directed by S.P.Kalla. His life story is like many other film people who, though successful in their vocation in the film industry, try their hand at producing a film and it becomes their nemesis costing them the ultimate- their life !

Mukesh and his Co-Singers –14
I have covered Mukesh’s songs composed by Sharda in my previous post.
I have also tried to cover many aspects of her career, but a few more details remain. A lot can be written about her association with Shankar and the various gossips and stories. But then, what is also known is that Sharda never revolted or reacted to these. She continued her life and career with whatever she came across. As such, a thought ran through my mind that it is better to stick to facts and statistics rather than the personal lives of artists.
We all have our likes and dislikes. I am not particularly fond of Sharda’s voice. But, then in many of her songs there is this unconventional, distinctive childish texture in her voice. In many songs that she sang this was a welcome change and did manage to capture the attention of music lovers. In an era where heroines were evolving into more mature roles and free expressions, such a voice suited their antics on the screen.

Today (1 March 2025) is the 83rd birthday of Indrani Mukherjee (born on March 01, 1942). I have watched some of her 1960s’ films mostly having pious and graceful roles. She was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was a doctor and her mother, a housewife. She did her early schooling in Allahabad and completed her high school studies in Kolkata. From her childhood, she was interested in Hindi films.

‘Kal Hamaaraa Hai’ (1959) was produced by K Amarnath and was directed by S K Prabhakar. The film’s story and the impression of the film have been well covered in the recent two articles on the film in the Blog. So, I will not repeat the same. Suffice to say here that the film was inspired from then Government’s efforts to improve the economic condition of the people of India through Five-Year Plans. However, there is a need to weed out corruption, anti-social elements and the social injustice. In these efforts, citizens have also some duties to perform, that is, to follow the path of honesty and hard work with the positive attitude.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Deep Jalta Rahe-1959.
I said ‘obscure film’ because no one remembers this film today. Actually this film was made by a well known banner like Filmistan, it was directed by a skilled director like Datta Dharmadhikari, music was by Roshan and the cast too had good actors. Still, the film remained a flop at the Box office. The reason was its story. The mid 50’s onwards the period was when the people looked at the films as entertainment with lilting music. This film had neither of these. Perhaps the makers forgot that films with a tragic end, separation of lovers and a weak story by current standards was not accepted by the audience.

Today’s song is from the film Satta Bazar-1959.
The 50’s decade was full of films which had ‘Family’ as the main focus in their stories. Relationship importance, Values’ germination in the youngsters, denouncing social evils and bad habits etc. were the story essentials in many films. Use of western music in films increased and the audience got a variety of music presentations to please them. In short, films truly became Entertainment. Let’s take a look at what was the film scene in the year 1959….
