A time was when KL Saigal was known as the foundation stone of New Theatres, and Kaanan Devi was known as the beauty and glamour. Also called as the nightingale of Bengal, was the most popular female singer of her era, and has left an indelible mark both in Hindi and Bengali cinema.

Introducing Shekhar Gupta – one of the quieter albeit active voices on the blog. Over the past two years, I have been in email communication with him, on various topics related to film music and the blog. He comes across as an unpretentious and humble personality, that belies his stature and accomplishments. In recent weeks, when I sent him an email request to get some personal information from him, his response started with such statements of humbleness and gratefulness, in a very friendly tone.

Whenever I listen to this song from ‘Abhilasha-1968’, I am thrilled, I get goose-bumps, its music makes me delighted and it takes back to the time when I was a kid and I was playing with an inflatable rainbow color beach ball, which my Father had brought for me…

Avinash Scrapwala is one of the “newer” contributors to the blog. He seems to have discovered the blog in june 2011 but decided to become a lyrics contributor only in late august 2012. His first lyrics contribution that appeared in the blog was Pyaar ka badla mujhe dekho kaisa mila (Ye Hai Zindagi)(1977). This song was a nice song containing the old world message of being content with one’s fate and staying humble despite becoming successful. If one looks at the lyrics contributions of Avinash Scrapwala, a good number of these songs are philosophical songs, inspirational songs, songs with a message etc. -feel good songs in brief that have a therapeutic effect on the listeners- what I also call “mental massage” songs. 🙂

I have never met Atul, he is not even my Facebook friend! But over the past few years I feel I have known him for a very long time. I know him as a very kind and gracious person who not only posted a few of my guest posts on his blog but was even very, very generous with his comments on my blog which has nothing to do with film songs. Maybe the reason for this is that we both grew up in middle class households in the same era, and that too within 130 km of each other (he in Ranchi and I in Jamshedpur, both small towns)

One of the earliest articles in the blog that gave me immense satisfaction was the article on the song “Din hai suhaana aaj pehli taareekh hai”. This song, that brings back nostalgia big time for people growing up in 1960s and 1970s is from “Pahli Taareekh” (1954) and it was played on Radio Ceylon (later SLBC) on the first day of every month. Listening to this song on the first day of every month in the “puraani filmon ke geet” programme was a divine experience. One needed to live in that era to savour it. Those who could never savour it because they were not born then, I can only say-tough luck. Better luck next time. 🙂

So, the countdown has already begun and now it’s time to celebrate one of the biggest milestone of this blog….10K songs. How appropriate it is to celebrate this special moment on it’s sixth b’day!! Due to a family emergency, my post has been delayed and I apologize to Atulji for that. One can say, in some ways, it was a letdown. I mean my first meeting in person with Khyati Ben. We had been in email touch prior to that. I was in US, and had made plans to go down to Los Angeles and meet her. For identification purposes, she had sent me her photograph – a most dazzling blonde, with sharp features and attractive eyes, carrying a red rose. As per suggestions from Raja ji (who was also party to the email thread), I had been instructed to wear a trench coat, a felt hat, dark glasses and sporting a fake beard. And yes, also to carry a red rose. That would have been the identification to each other. Then, we had code words also defined for a more certain identification. On seeing the red rose in her hands, I was supposed to approach her and ask the question –“Aasmaan mein kitne sitaare hain?”. And she was supposed to reply with “hoshiyaar, khatre ke har taraf se ishaare hain”. That was how the introduction was planned.
