Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 32
——————————————————————————————

Another date, and another look at our blog’s history. Ten years ago – well just a thought came to mind. If, say, we were more than two decades active with this blog, and then this idea occurred that we should start looking at our history, then guess, what would be the title of this series.  🙂 🙂  Nothing so straightforward as ‘Blog 10-Year Challenge’. The title then would be ‘Bees Saal Baad’. Sadly enough, there is no film in Hindi cinema history that talks something about a 10 year gap. 😀 😀

Coming to 25th May of 2009. Quite as regularly, six songs were posted that day. The films covered were

  1. Patita                                 1953
  2. Shabnam                           1964
  3. Main Suhaagan Hoon       1964
  4. Ganwaar                            1970
  5. Naina                                 1973
  6. Asha                                   1980

Of these six films, all but one have already been yippeee’d. The one remaining film is ‘Naina’ from 1973.

It is human nature that on every important occasion and event in life, we recall all the people who had ever crossed our lives and made a difference to it. I had a similar experience during the last year. I felt like I wanted to get in touch with people from way back as far as my childhood. I met people who were our neighbours when my daughter was born. I wanted to invite all those who knew her when she was very little and had showered prayers on her when she was not even aware of those blessings. Sometimes we lose touch with people as they move away or we move away. People who were neighbours and our kids used to play together. All of them had touched our lives, affected us in a good or bad way. Mostly in the essential goodness of human nature it was well intentioned.

Hullo to all Atulwaale

Majrooh Sultanpuri was an Urdu poet and also a lyricist or song writer for Bollywood movies. He was born in 1919 in Sultanpur Uttar Pradesh as Asrar ul Hassan Khan to a father who was a police officer. His father, though, a police officer, was not too keen on his son receiving English education and Majrooh was therefore sent for traditional ‘Madrasa education’ which led to his obtaining the qualification first of Dars-e-Nizami – a seven-year course which concentrated on religious affairs along with proficiency in Arabic and Persian- and then the certificate of Alim.(Personally, I don’t know what Alim is). He thereafter joined Lucknow’s Takmeel-ut-Tib College of Unani. He was a struggling Hakim when he happened to recite one of his ghazals at a mushaira in Sultanpur. The ghazal was a hit with the audience and Majrooh decided to drop his fledgling medical practice and began writing poetry seriously. Soon he was a ‘regular’ at mushairas and a “shagird” i.e. disciple of the then top name in Urdu Mushairas viz: Jigar Moradabadi.

Missing Films of 1960s – 109
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s film is ‘Night In Calcutta’ from 1970, produced under the banner of Mahendra Productions, Bombay. Given that it is a 1970 film, and looking at the list of songs, I am surprised this film did not make it here earlier. The lead pair in this film is Sanjeev Kumar and Simmi. By the time this film was released in 1970, both actors had comfortably settled into their careers. Sanjeev, having made his debut in 1960, had 10 years behind him, mostly in B/C grade cinema. 1971 was a year ahead when he would get recognition and national award with his portrayal in the film ‘Dastak’. Simi Garewal, had made her debut in 1962, with the English film ‘Tarzan Goes To India’ opposite to Feroze Khan, also had a good eight years behind her, with a mix of films, but mostly second female lead or a character role, but surely having worked with luminary directors of Indian cinema – Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor and Raj Khosla. ‘Siddhartha’, directed by Conrad Rooks – a definitive role as a courtesan, was still two years hence, in 1972.
