“Chashm-e Baddoor”(1981) was produced by Gul Anand and directed by Sai Paranjpe for P L A Productions, Bombay. This “Social” movie had Farooque Sheikh, Dipti Nawal, Saeed Jaafry, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Vaswani (debut), Leela Mishra, Chaman Bagga, John Shaw, Madan Sharma, Kamal Nathani, Keemti Anand, Kamla, Vinod Nagpal, Ravi Kiran Shashtri, Alka Nupur, Shiv, E Rajendran, Vinni Joglekar, Partho Roy etc in it. The movie had Ranjan Grewal and Vinod Doshi in special appearances whileAmitabh Bachcchan and Rekha made guest appearances.

According to HFGK, “Chashm-e Baddoor”(1981) had six songs in it. But it turns out that the movie also had a parody song that had a medley of old hit songs. This song is not mentioned in HFGK.

So including the above medley song, “Chashm-e Baddoor”(1981) had seven songs. Six songs have been covered in the blog. Here are thge details of the songs covered in the blog:-

Here is the seventh and final song from “Chashm-e Baddoor”(1981) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Haimanti Shukla. Indu Jain is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajkamal.

Unlike other songs, video of this song is not available. So it would seem that the song was excluded from the movie. I request our knowledgeable readers who have seen the movie to confirm whether this song was there in the movie. This song is not there in the movie available online.

There are certain songs which leave a deep impression on your young mind. Some may leave a wonderful feeling or a bitter one, an emotional one or a physical one, etc. This song reminds me of a very dear friend who was also my classmate during my formative years (Intermediate and Bachelor’s degree).

This friend, we shall call him Sanjay, had a very strong liking to Kishore Kumar songs, while I had a strong affinity to the songs sung by Mohd Rafi saab. Similarly, he liked R D Burman’s compositions while I loved Laxmikant Pyarelal’s compositions. He had a special liking for tall, dark and handsome actors (Amitabh/Mithun C/Mahendra Sandhu/etc) while I preferred Fair skinned handsome heroes (Shashi/Rishi Kapoors/etc). But the competitive spirit never came in the way of our friendship. We used to be always together in anything and everything. We had a hell of a friendship going on for 5 years.

Life went on, and after our graduation, we chose similar career paths as medical representatives, and had our job postings in different cities. He went to Solapur and I joined my duty in Kurnool. And then we drifted apart. Then, almost 25 years later, I was informed that the poor soul lost his life in a road accident. Although we had lost touch with each other, that news really shocked me.

Today’s song is in his memory and features two of his favourites – Kishore Kumar and Mahendra Sandhu. I remember having seen this movie with Sanjay in Zamrud Talkies in Abids, Hyderabad, when we were in our second of the three year graduation program.

Mahendra Sandhu was born on 18 April 1947 in Patiala, Punjab. In 1970, he joined the FTII, Pune, and completed a two year acting course.After this he started his career in 1973 with Khoon Khoon, a movie inspired by Dirty Harry. He has acted in 30 films, most famously in Agent Vinod (1977), produced by Rajshri Pictures.

Aaj Ki Radha aka Aaj Ki Dhara is a 1977 Hindi film directed by Mukul Dutt. The film features Mahendra Sandhu, Rehana Sultan, Waheeda Rehman, Danny Denzongpa and Ranjeet in the lead roles. A bit of trivia surrounds the title of this movie. It seems the censor board objected to having “Radha” in title when that character is shown as having loose character or negative traits. Therefore the title was changed to “Dhara” at the last minute. However, the LP records were released earlier and were sold as “Aaj Ki Radha”

This movie had 4 songs all penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri and composed by Sapan Jagmohan. This song “ Yeh Mehfil Yun Hi Sajegi” was sung by Kishore Kumar. The song is lip synced by Mahendra Sandhu and we can also see Rehana Sultan and Padma Khanna (sleeping/passed out on a chair/Table). I am unable to name the dancer who is dancing in front of Mahendra Sandhu – Can someone identify her?

Today’s song is from the film Bhakta Kabir-1942.

For the last two months’ period, I was very busy. First it was my ill health during which I spent a few days in Hospital also. After that I started doing my routine work. Then there was one company’s Board meeting which, being one of the Directors, I had to prepare and attend. After that I resumed my writing work and then some visitors came last week. Ms. Nupur Mitra, daughter of the legendary singer Jagmohan Sursagar came with her team-as per our plan- in connection with her forthcoming book on Jagmohan.

Prior to that, she had requested for some information and cross checking about his songs. That work had kept me busy for 7-8 days. Working with authors for their books is not new to me. Earlier I had the experience with Dr. Surjit singh ji, Biren kothari ji,Yasir Abbasi ji, Ranjan Sain and other half a dozen authors. Then there was Sheo Khetan ji for whom I had been busy for the last about two years, while he published 7 books. In between Shishir Krishna Sharma ji needs me for his work on YouTube Videos on old time artistes. Dr.Anup Phadke often needs information for his Blog. In addition to all this I am quite active on social media like Whatsapp and FaceBook. Replying to HFM queries on Emails eats away a lot of time, as it requires collecting data from different sources. Further, living alone takes up a lot of time in household management.

All in all, I have kept many of my personal work items pending for want of time. I thank God that at the age of 84 years, he keeps me busier than most retired persons I know ! This keeps me updated on the knowledge front too, as I have to refer to several books etc and make notes. In a way, staying all alone proves to be a boon for me because atleast I am not disturbing anyone’s routines due to my busy schedule.

The latest work programme for Jagmohan’s songs actually reminded me of several songs by him in Hindi films, on which I can (and I will) write posts on the Blog. In this process I found some new songs which I did not know about. It was a bonus for my work. It also helped me revise and refresh my own information.

Last month end my third book came out. However I am only a co-author of that book on Sheo ji’s insistence, as I had provided him a lot of information for these books.Next month end my 4th book will be published, again co-authored with Sheo ji. But this time my direct contribution is fifty-fifty.

Today’s song of Jagmohan is a rare coincidence. There were only two musicians from Bengal who were honoured with the title of ” Sur Sagar”. One was ofcourse Jagmohan. The other was, the Music Director of today’s film Himangshu Dutt. His name is not very well known among Hindi film lovers. He has done only 2 films in Hindi, but in Bengal his name was very famous and respected.

Himangshu Dutta ( 1908 – 15 November 1944) was a Bengali music director. Amongst several contemporary legendary composers of his time as Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Atulprasad Sen, Dutta is renowned for his unique and melodious composition of music. Songs composed by him are usually known as “Himangshu Dutta-er Gaan” (songs of Himangshu Dutta). The Saraswat Samaj of Dhaka awarded him the title ‘Surasagar’ (Sea of Music) for his contribution to Bengali music. He himself was an accomplished singer as well.
Himangshu Dutta was born in Comilla (now in Bangladesh) in 1908, to Jogendrachandra Dutta and Nirada Devi. He was the fifth child of the couple. After receiving primary and secondary education at Comilla and passing the entrance examination from Comilla Zilla School in 1924, he came to Kolkata and joined Presidency College to get the ISC degree. He received his bachelor degree from Vidyasagar College under Calcutta University.
Jogendra Chandra was very fond of music and many eminent musicians of Comilla used to visit his house in a regular manner. This not only helped child Himangshu to listen to quality classical music at his very young age but also to get closer to various forms of music like Dhrupad, Khayal, Ghazal, Lokogiti, and other various local music forms of Comilla.

Himangshu Dutta’s mother was also a noted singer of that time and she used to sing Rabindrasangeet to her sons and daughters. Himangshu Dutta received the first lessons of music from his mother.

Himangshu Dutta learned Dhrupad from Acharya Shyamacharan Dutta and Bhajan from Ustad Khasru Miya, and Pandit Khitimohan Sensashtri. He also received training on classical music from his elder brother Shachindra Dutta.

Before reaching his teenage years, Himangshu Dutta started singing Brahma Sangeet and Bhajan in different local functions at Comilla.

In 1922 Himangshu Dutta composed music for a song whose lyric was written by his classmate Subodh Purkayastha. Himangshu sang the song at a function of his school. The duo, Himangshu and Subodh, later gave the Bengali audience a vast number of super-hit songs.

In 1923 Rabindranath Tagore visited Comilla and the young boy sang Rabindrasangeet in a public function in front of Rabindranath Tagore. Rabindranath appreciated it very much.

Beside having a deep interest in music composition, Himangshu Dutta was an avid notation writer from a very young age. He wrote notations for various musicians including Atulprasad Sen and Rabindranath Tagore. Maestros like Pankaj Kumar Mullick also mentioned this in his writing.

In 1928, Himangshu met singer Dr. Sudhamadhab Dutta. Next year, Dr. Dutta sang two songs composed by Himangshu at All India Radio, Kolkata. This is possibly the first occurrence at which a Bengali audience got the taste of Himangshu Dutta over the radio. From this point onwards, Sudhamadhab continued singing “Himangshu Dutta-er Gaan”, broadcast by All India Radio every Sunday.

In the year 1931 Gramophone Company of India released the first record based on the composition of Himangshu Dutta. The artist was Haripada Roy. In the same year, the company also published another record from its HMV division where Sati Devi (Ashok Kumar’s sister) was the singer, and Himangshu emerged as a star in the history of so-called modern Bengali songs.

Himangshu started using both Indian classical music and western harmony to bring a complete new type of music in the history of Bengali music composition. Beside composing music for basic Bengali, Ghazal, and Ragapradhan, he also composed music for a number of Bengali as well as Hindi film songs. In 1934, he entered the world of film industry through the film “Taruni”. In the next ten years he worked as a composer in many Bengali as well as Hindi films.

His compositions for songs like “”Boroshar Megh Name”, “Bidayer Sesh Bani”, “Birohini Chiro Birohini”, “Jodi Dokhina Pobon Ashiya”, “Rater Deule Jage”, and many others will remain as favourites to the audience of Bengali songs forever. As per HFGK, he gave music to only 2 Hindi films. Bhakta Kabir-1942 and Bhaichara-1943, composing 26 songs.

Himangshu Dutta died on 15 November 1944 at the age of 36.

India is a Multi racial, multilingual and Multi religions country. It is not only one of the largest Democracies in the world, but also the largest Secular state in the world, where people from different faiths have been living together since centuries.

Many saints and religious leaders have played a significant role in keeping the mixed population of India as One Unit, when it was needed the most. A majority of Hindus, ruled by a minority Muslim Mughals was a natural cause for social divisions, but Saints like Kabir, Surdas, Tulsidas, Ramdas, Tukaram, Ramanand, Narsi Mehta, Purandar das,namdev, Guru Nanak Dev, Eknath, Bhakta Pundarikar, Rohidas, Mrutyunjaya and many such noble souls, did an excellent job of maintaining harmony amongst peoples of different faiths.

Kabir was born near Kashi (Varanasi) to a Bramhin widow, who deserted him, for fear of social boycott. He was found and brought up by a Muslim weaver couple-Niru and Naima. Vaishnava Saint Ramanand accepted him as his disciple. Unlike some other saints, Kabir did not become a Sadhu or a Fakir, but he married and led a normal life earning from his Loom works. He had 1 son and 1 daughter also.

Kabir campaigned against social discrimination and economic exploitation. He vehemently opposed dogmas in Hinduism and islam. His language was straight from the heart, using common vernacular words, which appealed to the masses. He was against Murti-puja and believed in Bhakti and Sufi ideas. He was an illiterate person. His poems and Dohas were heard ,noted and written by his followers. His works are included in the Guru Granth Sahib of the Sikhs also. His dohas were in Awadhi, Brij and Bhojpuri languages. Through his philosophies, he spread the message of unity during his times. For him Ram and Rahim were the same.

While the authentic period of kabir is 1440 to 1518, there are popular legends about him living for 120 years and after death, his body turning into Flowers.

More than anything else Kabir is remembered for the courage of his convictions. He was a religious reformer who slashed down the orthodox bigotism of Hindus and Muslims alike. He denounced with a touch of satire, the whole apparatus of piety of the temple and the mosque, the idol and the holy water scriptures and the priests, labelling them as cults that vainly tried to replace Reality with Ritual. And thus it was that while courting bitterness from the accepted monopolists of Faith, he tried to eliminate the bitterness that then existed between Hindu and Muslims of that day. The life story of Kabir is surrounded by numerous contradictory legends, on which reliance cannot be placed. It is therefore not to be expected that any one version of his life could satisfy all such sections of people who claim to know anything about him.

Film Bhakt Kabir-1942 was made by Unity productions, Calcutta. It was directed by Rameshwar Sharma. The songs were by Pt.Shiv kumar Sharma. There were 4 songs based on Kabir’s work. Incidentally, this was the First film of Bharat Bhushan as a lead actor. Earlier he had acted in Chitralekha-1941. Of course the film Bhakta Kabir did not give any name or fame to Bharat Bhushan and he had to wait for another 10 years till the film Baiju Bawra-1952 made him very famous. The others in the cast were, Mehtab, Mazhar Khan, Padma Devi N A Ansari and few othe Bangla artistes.

Hullo Atuldom

The Ranchiwala Gaanewala (a name bestowed on our fearless leader by Sudhirji) had gone down memory lane with this post. He had spoken about his growing-up years in the railway quarters that was his home for 28 years. He had spoken about looking for friends and classmates with whom he had long-lost contact using the various social media options.

Today, as I sat to write this post, I revisited the 19th July, 2019 post. It reminded me of how I managed to locate a lot of my classmates of school in the last three years -thanks to WhatsApp & Facebook. (both of these social media forums have become essential devils).

The reason to revisit the post from 2019, I was looking up songs from the 1984 released, Prakash Jha directed “Hip Hip Hurray”. I was looking up songs featuring Raj Kiran (19th June being his birthdate). I remembered that the Prakash Jha film had songs where Raj Kiran was looking very good and emoted using his eyes & charming smile.

Raj Kiran was born in Mumbai in a Sindhi family. He made his debut opposite Sarika in B.R. Ishara’s “Kaagaz Ki Naao” in 1975. His career spanned for nearly 25 years (till 1999 when his last film ‘Chudail No.1’ released. He was seen in roles of various shades playing leading as well as supporting roles. He was often paired opposite Shoma Anand in family dramas playing a husband who gets misguided by his wife. There were many films in the 1980s which had Raj Kiran playing strong negative characters too when suddenly his career started going downhill. Additionally, he went through family problems causing depression etc. He is said to have been undergoing treatment somewhere in the USA after disappearing from the film industry.

The 2019 post, by Atulji, for the melodious Vanraj Bhatia composed- Yesudas sung song gives a synopsis of the film. That post also gives details about the dialogue which was keeping up with those times when knowledge about computers & electronics were limited. The film also highlighted the age-old conflict of studies over & above extra-curricular activities.

Thinking of this handsome actor with this post, which has a down-memory-lane song. It is in the voice of Bhupinder Singh & Asha Bhosle and written by Gulzar.

It has been exactly 619 days from my last post on this blog. There are many reasons, but most important was the paucity of time. Two years ago I accepted a part time job with a prestigious telecom company, which is a home based desk job. Although I work 4 hours a day, it still makes it that much harder to find time for those things that you love to do.

My love and fascination for rare songs from obscure Hindi movies has led me to find many hidden and rare songs. I am presenting one such gem sung by the uniquely talented performer – Sulakshana Pandit. She is a playback singer who also excelled in acting on the celluloid screen, similar to Kishore Kumar, Kundan Lal Sehgal, Ashok Kumar, Salma Agha, etc.

Born on 12 July 1954, in Raigarh of present Chhattisgarh, Sulakshana hails from a musically enriched family. Her father, Pratap Narain Pandit was an Indian classical vocalist of Mewati Gharana and a fine tabla player. Her brothers, Jatin Pandit and Lalit Pandit together form the renowned music composing duo, Jatin-Lalit. Prior to that Jatin had partnered with the elder brother Mandheer to for the composer jodi – Mandhir-Jatin.

Sulakshana started off as a playback singer fairly young, and matched pipes with Lata Mangeshkar in the popular song, Saat Samundar Paar Se. . . Pappa Jaldi Aa Jaanaa (Taqdeer) from the 1967 film, Taqdeer. She had proved her vocal genius singing duets with celebrated singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohammad Rafi, Shailendra, Yesudas and more.

Her acting career spanned the 70s and the mid-80s. She could have continued for longer had life not taken some cruel turns.

Sulakshana’s debut as an actress happened with the 1975 release ‘Uljhan’. She was cast opposite Sanjeev Kumar in this murder mystery.

Her performance was liked by the movie-goers and filmmakers acknowledged her potential as an actress. Offers started rolling out at her door; she didn’t falter on the opportunities either. By the end of the decade she had worked in over a dozen movies and was counted as a bankable actress. Some of her best movies are ‘Uljhan’ (1975), ‘Apnapan’ (1977),  ‘Khandaan’ (1979), ‘Waqt Ki Deewar’ (1981), and ‘Chehre Pe Chehra’ (1981). With Sanjeev Kumar, she acted in 7 movies, and somewhere between the ‘actions’ and the ‘cuts’, she lost her heart to the charmer.

Unfortunately, Kumar was head over heels for dream girl, Hema Malini, and had asked for her hand in marriage. Hema Malini didn’t reciprocate his feelings and her refusal left a dent in his heart. A heartbroken Sanjeev Kumar immersed himself in alcohol which started to take over his health.

Aware of Sulakshana’s emotions for him, he took her for a friend. In a memoir published in a leading portal, the actress pens, “It was during the film ‘Uljhan’ (1975) that I fell in love with Sanjeev Kumar. We had struck a wonderful rapport with each other. He was madly in love with Hema Ji, during those days. So, naturally, he would come to me with all his problems! I felt terrible, but I used to console myself thinking this was just a phase! Once he got out of it, I wanted to tell him how I felt about him. But I never did get the chance. My co-artistes would tell me, “Sulakshana, you are what this man needs! You will change his life”. It is said that Sulakshan Pandit had asked the ‘Anamika’ actor to marry her multiple times. But Sanjeev would turn her down repeatedly.

Sanjeev Kumar was born with a heart ailment and poor lifestyle choices damaged it further. Despite receiving treatment in the United States, 47-year-old Sanjeev Kumar left the world in November 1985. His death left Sulakshana Pandit shattered. After having her heart broken repeatedly by the same man, she chose to stay a life of aloofness and was soon devoured by depression. Her last release was ‘Do Waqt Ki Roti’ that hit the theaters in 1988.
Bitten by unrequited love, she never gave love another chance and remained unmarried for life. After quitting acting she was faced with a stern financial crisis. She could sing, but brothers Jatin-Lalit who were doing exponentially well as composers, didn’t do much to revive her music career.

As the cash depleted, by 2002 she was left impoverished in a ravaged apartment bereft of any furniture. She put it up for sale, but struggled to get any buyers. That is when her brother-in-law late music director Adesh Srivastav showed up and acquired the flat. From the proceeds of the sale, she paid up her dues and moved in with sister Vijayta and her husband Adesh. Adesh was planning a devotional album with Sulakshana but he too was taken away before the plan could materialize. In 2012, her third sister Sandhya Singh was brutally murdered by her son over money issues.

Few years back, Sulakshana met with an accident indoors and broke her hip bone. After undergoing four surgeries she manages to walk with difficulty. At the age of 65, the talented actress of yesteryear lives a life confined to her bedroom, listening to songs from her glorious days. Things could have been different and better for both, had Sanjeev Kumar moved over Hema Malini and married that one woman who truly loved him, but destiny has a mind of its own. Doesn’t it!!

Todays song is a solo by Sulakshana Pandit. This song “Tere Bina Jiya Na Laage” is penned by Mahendra Dehlvi and is superbly composed by her brothers’ team – Mandheer-Jatin.

With this song, the movie ‘Dil Hi Dil Mein’ (1981) makes its debut on this blog.

Today’s song is from the stunt film ‘Garma Garam’ (1957).

In Hindi films, many times the titles are given to the films just to attract the audience. Such films have absolutely no relevance to the core-story of the film. Sometimes there is an excess of certain emotions in the films. I had seen one Hindi film in which, by the end of the film all the major characters were shown as dead- including the lead pair. No wonder, the audience must have run away lest they would be the next in line !

Excess of any emotion, be it tragedy or comedy makes no sense. The public comes to the theater to get entertained. When you decide to go to a film, what are your criteria? Story, publicity, cast, director, the banner or simply the posters? There were times when banners i.e. studio names were indicative of the type of movies generally made by them. Like, for example – Minerva Movietone means long dialogues, costumes and historical stories. Wadia Movietone means stunts, fights and action, supported by Wonder Horse, Dog, Cat, Elephant, Monkey or some such animal like even a Viper, Bear or a Lion ! Prabhat means meaningful themes and thought provoking subjects, Prakash Pictures means religious or Mythological films etc etc.

Then came a time when people went to see movies to listen to songs of Naushad, Husnlal-Bhagatram or C Ramchandra etc. Later the stars were the attraction for the crowds like Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala or Meena Kumari etc. Whatever the genre of the film, an integral part of the cast was the comedian. Thus there were even times when films were made in the names of Johnny Walker, Om Prakash or Kishore Kumar. But when a film has a crowd of comedians and a music director who once gave music which shook the entire country, what would you expect from the film ?

This is precisely what happened with the film, ‘Garma Garam’. The cast consists of Agha, Gope, Om Prakash, Bhagwan, Maruti Rao, Chhota Gope, Indira Bansal, Nadira, Rajni, Miss Kamal, Maya Das, Krishna Kumari and many others. The film was classified as a ‘stunt’ film. I wonder what stunts this band of comedians performed in the film. I saw this film when it was released on 5th July 1957 at Lamington Cinema, Bombay as well as in Ashok Talkies in Hyderabad. After seeing the film we felt like we had been cheated. The film had no stunts and nothing in the film to make the audience ‘garam‘ either ! In those times while Vinod’s songs of ‘Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949) were still echoing in our ears, music of this film made us completely ‘thanda thanda‘ and made us wonder if he was the same MD Vinod of ‘Ek Thi Ladki’? Here is the film’s story which will prove what I have said,

Wealthy Garib Das has no issues, but only 2 nephews – Baanke, a simpleton and Banwari, a chaalbaaz, who spends money on a dancing girl -Chandni. Knowing this Garib Das makes his will in the name of Baanke. While recording his will on camera, he dies without telling the location of his wealth halfway.

Baanke contacts the photographer Asha for inquiry. They fall in love. While searching they find a map and 6 keys hidden in 6 golden chairs that hold the secret. But the chairs are already sold by Banwari to various people in India. They get addresses from the auctioneer who sold these chairs.

Asha and Baanke contact all those buyers and get the 6 keys. Meanwhile, Baanke comes to know all this and catches up with the pair. There is a fight between Baanke and Banwari. Banke wins the fight, but magnanimously gives the keys to Banwari. Seeing this generosity, Banwari has a change of heart and both embrace each other.

Finally, they find a box. Using the keys, they open the Box, only to find only a piece of white paper written “God helps those who help themselves”. Asha has an idea. She starts pressing the box in different ways and suddenly it opens and the map is found where the wealth is hidden. The two brothers share the wealth.

The End.

Bombay film industry can swing in extremes. At times it can be very generous and at others very cruel. It bows its head before you, if you have a big name tag or a big name godfather solidly behind you and more often it refuses to acknowledge your genius. Bombay film industry certainly did not give what was due to some brilliant music directors like Shyam Sunder, Vinod, Sajjaad Husain, Allah Rakha, Khursheed Anwar, Hans Raj Behl and Sardar Malik to name a few. Bombay film industry deserted Husn Lal and Bhagat Ram, when they were at their creative best. Even the acclaimed greats like Anil Biswas and Madan Mahan did not get their rightful due, compared to some lesser but luckier artists in the field.

Music director Vinod’s real name was Eric Roberts, but for the film industry he chose a more familiar and shorter name – Vinod. This was revealed by one of his sons-in-law Kelly Mistry, who is married to his daughter Veera Roberts. His other daughter’s name is Veena Roberts (Veena Solomon after marriage).

According to Vinod’s son-in-law Kelly Mistry, Vinod was born on May 28, 1922. Vinod hailed from a Christian family of Lahore, who were converted from Hindus. Vinod had his family tree connected to Gurdaspur and Amritsar. As a child Vinod was fascinated by the band music which was prominently played during Lahore’s colorful Hindu weddings. Vinod also listened carefully for hours to the rabaabi musicians performing Shabad Kirtan at Gurdwara Dera Sahib Lahore and other shrines. Vinod became a student of Lahore’s famous music director Pandit Amar Nath and learnt the fundamentals of ragas and tune making with the help of a harmonium from the great maestro.

He started composing tunes while he was still in Lahore prior to 1947. After the death of Pandit Amar Nath, he got the contract of composing the music for a number of films including Punjabi film ‘Chaman’. But the film could not be taken up due to the tense communal atmosphere in Lahore. It was made much later on in India after 1947. Pushpa Hans and Shamshad Begum lent their voices to the songs in this film. Lata Mangeshkar was a new find, looking for work and Vinod gave her three songs to sing. Incidentally Lata’s all three numbers became landmark songs not only for this film, but for other Punjabi films to follow. Those were the days of extreme communal tension on both sides of the Radcliffe line in Punjab , as a consequence after its release the film did not do well in Pakistani Punjab. But the selling of its music even in Pakistan did quite a decent business.

According to some historians Vinod’s mentor Pandit Amar Nath died in 1946. Some other historians say that Pandit Amar Nath died in February of 1947. But by 1944 most of the Lahore based music directors like Khurshid Anwar (in 1941), Shyam Sunder (in 1943), Hans Raj Behl (in 1944), Rashid Atre, Feroze Nizami, Ghulam Haider, Pandit Husn Lal Bhagat Ram shifted their base to Bombay. Pandit Amar Nath and Pandit Gobind Ram were the only ones left in Lahore. After Pandit Amar Nath’s health deteriorated in 1946, Vinod inherited some of his contracts. ‘Khamosh Nigahein’, ‘Paraye Bas Mein’ and ‘Kamini’ were some of the movies which fell into Vinod’s kitty. None of these 1946 movies did well at the box office and Vinod did not get any mileage from them either.

Vinod got the best break in his career in 1949, when he got the contract to compose the music for Hindi film ‘Ek Thi Ladki’. The film became a hit and its Lata song “Lara Lappa Lara Lappa Laai Rakhda, Addi Tappa Addi Tappa Laai Rakhda” became a nation-wide hit. The tune of this song was based on an old Pahadi Punjabi folk tune of Kangra district. While listening to his other songs for this film, a similarity with the tunes of film ‘Mirza Sahiban’ composed by his mentor Pandit Amar Nath can be clearly established. This goes to prove that Vinod, in letter and spirit, learnt the art of tune making from his teacher. This earned him a contract for another Punjabi film ‘Bhaaiya Ji’ made in 1950. Lata sang several memorable songs for this movie. One of its sad songs “Ajj Mera Maahi Naal Tutt Gaya Pyaar Ve Akhiyan Na Maar Ve” was acclaimed to be a landmark song. Even Sardul Kwatra had great admiration for this song. This song later on inspired the tunes of several Hindi songs. In 1949 Vinod composed music for another Hindi film ‘Taara’, which did not create any waves.

Talat Mahmood and Mohammad Rafi were the favorite male singers of Vinod, who always did full justice to his tunes. According to Sardul Kwatra Vinod had no godfather like Shanker and Jaikishan had in producer actor Raj Kapoor and producer Amiya Chakravarty and Naushad had in a very popular producer Mehboob Khan. Roop K Shorey, who gave Vinod music composition contracts for his films, somehow did not belong to the big league of Bombay based film producers like Sohrab Modi, KA Abbas, V Shantaram, Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor etc.

Roop K Shorey of course was a very famous film producer in Lahore, who while moving to Bombay , took his entire team with him. Music director Vinod and lyricist Aziz Kashmiri were members of his group. Vinod composed the music for most of Roop K Shorey films. In all Vinod composed music for 27 Hindi films, out of which he shared music with other music directors for at least six films. Some of his films were not completed and some were not released even after completion. Among some of Vinod’s best known creations were the musical compositions of films ‘Anmol Rattan’ (1950), ‘Wafaa’ (1950) ‘Sabz Bagh’ (1951) ‘Aag ka Dariya’ (1953), ‘Laadla’ (1954), ‘Oot Pataang’ (1955) and ‘Makhi Choos’ (1956). For a while Roop K Shorey got Vinod a salaried job as a music director in Filmistan Studios. One characteristic of Vinod was that in Punjabi films he inserted Hindi songs and in Hindi film songs he inserted some Punjabi wording. This trend was discontinued later on, but since the nineties once again Punjabi songs became a part of most Hindi films and these songs are proving big hits.

Vinod was doing one or two successful films on an average per year from 1948 to 1957, but one or two hit films in a year are not enough to ensure a decent standard of living in a city like Bombay. HusnLal Bhagat Ram gave the music for 19 films in 1949 and 1950 and Shanker Jaikishan were composing music in 3 to 4 hit films every year during the fifties and sixties. Such busy schedules made both duos financially quite well off. OP Nayyar was also doing 3 to 4 successful films a year during the fifties, but somehow he did not manage his finances well. On the other hand Naushad was professionally quite creative and he always managed his finances well and lived in comfort. Both Shyam Sunder and Vinod, in spite of being thoroughly professional in their field, were never financially well off. They both died during the fifties. After Vinod’s untimely death at a young age of thirty seven on December 25, 1959, his wife Sheela had great difficulty in bringing up their children. Vinod loved his childhood city of Lahore and did not want to leave that great cultural centre, but the unfortunate partition of Punjab and the resultant bloodshed and its trauma left him with no option of going back to Lahore. Vinod was every inch a Punjabi and he longed to compose music for the Punjabi films, but after 1951 mostly two music directors ended up getting all the music direction contracts. They were Master Hans Raj Behl and Sardul Kwatra. Vinod composed music for only five Punjabi movies. These are ‘Chaman’ (1948), ‘Bhaaiya Ji’ (1950), ‘Mutiyaar’ (1950), ‘Ashtalli’ (1954) and ‘Nikki’ (1958). Vinod died a frustrated man, who’s professional genius was always shortchanged.

Although Vinod composed music for thirty two films, most of these films were under small banners and the music of most of them let down by the film’s poor showing at the box office. Vinod died in Bombay on 25-12-1959. [Adapted from an article by Harjap Singh Aujla, with thanks and my notes].

Film’s story, dialogues and screenplay were by PL Santoshi, who had given us some very entertaining films earlier. He was, by the end of the 50’s decade, on his sliding part of the career and could not make the film entertaining. There were 11 songs in the film written by Santoshi, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and DN Madhok, but hardly any song one could hum later or remember after 2-3 days.

‘Chowki No 11’ (1978) was produced by Kuki and directed by VK Sobti for Siddharthas. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Zarina Wahab, Jagdeep, Amjad Khan, Kader Khan, Aruna Irani, Katy Mirza, Manmohan, Yunus Parwez, Vijay Behl, Krishna Dhawan, Madhup Sharma, Dimpy Chauhan, V Suri, Master Ravi, Master Bittu etc in it. Jeetendra had made a special appearance in the movie.

Director VK Sobti had also written story, screenplay and dialogues of the movie.

The film had three songs in it. VK Sobti, in addition to the above mentioned multi tasking, had also penned two out of three songs. Third song was written by Pt Vishweshwar Sharma. It was this song penned by Pt Vishweshwar Sharma that has survived while most other things associated with the movie have been forgotten almost as soon as the movie was released.

Indian audience are quite forgiving as far as their taste are concerned. They can patronize happy movies, sad movies, action movies, musical movies, melodramas etc. But this movie had nothing to offer. It was out and out a dull and boring movie.

The song Kahin ho na mohalle mein halla turned out to be a surprise hit. It in fact has become an all time hit song. Most people in India are aware of Shobha Gurtu because of this song which was her rare foray into Hindi movie playback singing.

Here is the third and final song from ‘Chowki No 11’ (1978). This song is sung by Vijayeta Pandit. VK Sobti is the lyricist. Music is composed by Sonik Omi.

Amjad Khan has kidnapped Master Bittu. He allows him to make a telephone call to his mother (Aruna Irani). Master Bittu, instead of talking normally sings a song on the phone, which is eagerly lapped up by his anxious mother (Aruna Irani) and grandfather (Manmohan).

I have not been able to get a few words in the lyrics to my satisfaction. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

Today’s song is from a Muslim Social film ‘Paak Daman’ (1957).

Why I am specifying Muslim social is because it was a film depicting the Muslim social culture in India. India is a country where there are many religions living together for hundreds of years. The major 8 religions in India are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Judaism and Zoroastrianism (Parsee). There are hundreds of smaller religions thriving in India , apart from these.

As far as Hindi films are concerned, most films show Hindu culture. Very few films were made on Christian, Sikh or Parsee cultures. Considering that since the beginning of film making, Muslims were into it in a large number, one would expect a large number of Muslim films made in India. 1957 was a year in which there was good variety in the subjects handled by the film makers. Musical films like ‘Aasha’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Baarish’, ‘Dekh Kabeera Roya’, ‘Naya Daur’ etc, films on murder and mystery, films on farmers, comedy films, tragedy films, mythological films, costume dramas, fantasy films, stunt films. . .
You just name the genre and a film on that genre was made in 1957. One of the genres, however, which is neglected, by and large, in India is Muslim Social films. ‘Paak Daaman’ was a film of this genre in 1957.

Sometimes I wonder, there was a time when this film industry was thickly populated with Muslim artistes in every field – acting, production, direction or composing music Still not many films were made on Muslim backgrounds. There is a sizable and rapidly growing portion of Muslim population in India. But if you count films based on Muslim issues or Muslim backgrounds, then they may not account for more than 1 to 2 % of the total film production.

It is not only the Muslim films, but films on other minorities like Christians, Parsis, Jains, Budhists, Sikhs too are not much represented in our films. It is very sad that such films are not made, though the figures and history tells us that such films were quite successful at the box office.

Muslim films fall under two categories. One, films made on Historical Muslim characters like Akbar, Babar, Humayun, Shahjehan, Razia Sultan etc. And the second group is that of Muslim society. Just for the sake of curiosity, I scanned the 5 volumes of HFGK and wrote down names of films made on Muslim subjects of both types. To my surprise, I could not go beyond even 50 films, from 1931 to 1980 ! Granted that I must have made a mistake in counting and identifying, since I do not know the story line of every film, still the number will not go beyond 200 films, despite liberal stretching !

The point I want to make here is that not many Muslim social movies have been made in India over the years. The earliest such film was ‘Najma’ (1943), I think. One very very explosive Muslim social film, made by Director Mehboob was ‘Elan’ in 1947. Munawar Sultana was the lead actress in it. Before starting the shooting, Mehboob called her and said, ”You have heard the story, it is a very very hot story. I guess there will be a lot of opposition from our fundamentalist people. You may have to face their ire. Maybe you will be attacked or thrown out of society. But remember, I am doing this film, because I want our people to improve on par with others. If you want, you can reject the film even now. Think and tell me before we start shooting.” Munawar Sultana quickly said,”There is no need to think. I want to do this film. I am not afraid of anyone. I have full faith in you.” After release, the film did evoke violent reactions from a section of the Muslim society but it subsided slowly.

‘Paak Daman’ was first made in 1931, the very first year of the talkie films. Then it was made in 1940 and then it was made once again in 1957. ‘Paak Daman’ was a popular stage drama of the early 1900’s. There exist many versions of this story with minor variations, like names and places etc. The Parsi Urdu Theatre version was written by Agha Hashra Kashmiri, then famously known as ‘Shakespeare of India’. The Parsi Gujarati plays were written by various authors. Syed Yawar Ali penned the script for the Moon Parsi Theatre. The Alfred Drama Company had their own version of the story. In 1932, a film called ‘Paak Daman Raqaasa’ (aka ‘Innocent Rakkasa’ or ‘Innocent Dancer’ or ‘निर्दोष नर्तिका’ was made by Elephanta Movietone, Punjab. But I guess it was not one of these versions, just like the 1957 movie.

Some other Muslim socials I remember are ‘Zeenat’, ‘Pehli Nazar’, ‘Dil Hi To Hai’, ‘Bahu Begum’, ‘Mere Mehboob’, ‘Palki’, ‘Chaudhvin Ka Chaand’, ‘Dastak’, ‘Garm Hawa’, ‘Bazaar’, ‘Anjuman’, ‘Naseem’, the Trilogy by Khalid Mohammed – ‘Mammo’, ‘Sardari Begum’ and ‘Zubeida’, ‘Fiza’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Benazir’, ‘Ghazal’, ‘Chhote Nawab’ etc.. Then there are ‘Barsaat Ki Raat, ‘Nikaah’, ‘Shatranj’, ‘Mehboob Ki Mehndi’, ‘Umrao Jaan’, ‘Pakeezah’, ‘Anwar’, ‘My Name Is Khan’, ‘Bombay’ etc. Surely, there must be many more than what I have mentioned. I am not counting historical films as they are not socials. As far as I remember, producers like Mehboob Khan, AR Kardar, K Asif, Fazli brothers and few others were producing Muslim culture films.
There is a book ‘Forgotten Movies on Muslim Culture 1933-1947’, written by a friend, Kamlakar Pasupuleti ji. He too happens to be from Hyderabad – like me and is of almost my age. The book gives details of such films, but sadly, only upto 1947. This book, however, lists only 29 films. I feel sure that there were many more films which he did not include, maybe due to nonavailability of full details !

Like ‘Same Name Confusion’ in artistes of Hindi films, there is also ‘Same Title Confusion’ of Hindi films. Same titles can be confusing if it’s year is not mentioned after the title. This title confusion started with India’s first Talkie film ‘Alam Ara’ (1931), which was remade in 1956 and again in 1973. Same case with ‘Anarkali’ – 1928, 1935 and 1953. Some other repeat titles are ‘Aabroo’, ‘Aadmi’, ‘Aanbaan’, ‘Aandolan’, ‘Aarzoo’, ‘Asha’, ‘Aashiana’ etc. The list is very long. One film ‘Insaaf’ beats all such titles hollow. It was made as many times as 7 times – in 1937, 1946, 1956, 1966, 1973, 1987 and 1997. Note that there was one film called ‘Insaaf’ made in every decade from the 30’s to the 90’s !

Some actors have created records featuring in all versions. Actress Sulochana (Ruby Meyers) acted in film ‘Anarkali’ made in 1928, 1935 and 1953. Wazir Mohammed Khan acted in ‘Alam Ara’ made in 1931, 1956 and 1973. Ashok Kumar acted in the films ‘Bandhan’ made in 1940, 1956 and 1969. There are hundreds of actors who featured in 2 same title films.

‘Paak Daman’ was also the title of two movies in 1940 and 1957. One common name was Ghulam Mohd. But in this case Ghulam Mohammed the actor was in the 1940 film and Ghulam Mohammed the Music Director was in the 1957 film.

The cast of the 1957 film was Chitra, Sudesh Kumar, Moti Sagar, WM Khan, Shaikh, Kumar, H Prakash and many more. The lyricist was Shakeel Badayuni, who is seen in one of the songs from this film (in a Mushaira). The story of this film is,

Handsome and well-educated Yusuf (Sudesh Kumar) inherits his father’s estate in Lucknow. To him gambling becomes just a pastime in the company of Asad (Kumar), a man without principles, and his associates Abboo and Nabboo. Both Yusuf and Asad are in love with the beautiful Suraiya (Chitra). Her cousin Mahmud (Moti Sagar) is also secretly in love with her; but she is unaware of it. She believes that Mahmud loves Sabiya (Krishna Kumari), her best friend.

One day Asad sends his mother to Suraiya’s aunt with a view to bring about his marriage with her. The aunt rejects the proposal saying that Asad is a wastrel and not a fit husband for Suraiya. But Mahmud, knowing that Suraiya loves Yusuf, suggests that she be married to Yusuf. He decides to marry Sabiya who loves him deeply. Infuriated Asad begins to destroy the perfectly happy matrimonial union of Yusuf and Suraiya. He lures Yusuf into the gulf of vice through gambling and drink. He even forges a letter from Mahmud to Suraiya and involves Yusuf into the murder of Mahmud.

As the police arrive on the scene, Asad deliberately helps Yusuf to abscond. Hearing of Mahmud’s death, poor Sabiya goes mad. With Yusuf in hiding and out of his way, Asad now proceeds to make Syraiya his own. He sends his henchman Nabbo to steal the letter from her house. He obtains the letter, but is caught by the police. Far away from Lucknow, Yusuf finds a job at the quarry of Haji Saheb who is none other than Sabiya’s father.

Yusuf comes back to Lucknow in disguise and his heart bleeds to find Suraiya and child undergoing untold hardships with only the faithful old servant Tehsin (WMKhan) by her side. Asad kidnaps Suraiya’s child and lures her into his secret den. Since she refuses to marry him, he places the child before the cage of a tiger and opens the door. Yusuf comes up in the nick of time, in the disguise of Gunga, and saves the child. Just then the police arrive with Tehsin and others and Asad is arrested. Thus all’s well that ends well.

Sadanand Kamath ji while covering one of songs from the movie had provided the story of the movie taken from FilmIndia magazine. Here is the story:

Kulsum (Nargis) and Nadira (Begum Para) are friends. Kulsum is poor while Nadira is rich and fashionable. Kulsum gets married to a poor school teacher (Karan Diwan) who loses his job. With the money raised by selling Kulsum’s ornaments, her husband goes to Europe. He returns and becomes the Principal of a school where he meets Nadira. He is now interested in marrying Nadira without telling her that he was already married to Kulsum.

On the day of the marriage, both friends – Kulsum and Nadira meet. Soon the story gets unfolded in which her husband is exposed. After a long lecture by Kulsum, her husband realises his wrong step and thus saved from the bigamy though with consent, he could have four wives.

The film failed at the box office as audience of those days were already exposed to similar story lines in movies like ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) and ‘Dard’ (1947).

Here is the eighth and final song from ‘Mehndi’ (1947) to appear in the blog. This song, as also the penultimate song covered a few days ago were the most obscure songs that were difficult to locate. These songs have become available online just recently and they are difficult to locate unless someone is actually searching for them.

Except for the song O door jaane waale aati hai yaad aa jaa whose singer is mentioned in HFGK, HFGK is silent about the singers of other songs. But we in the blog have been able to find out the identity of the singers of other songs as well. Sometimes we have gone by the name of the singer as mentioned by the uploader and sometimes we have identified the singer by comparing the voice with other voices in the blog where the name of singer is known.

This eighth and final song is one such song whose singers are not mentioned in HFGK. The uploader mentions the singer as Zohrabai Ambalewaali and chorus. The main female voice sounds like Zohrabai Ambalewaali, but I can detect another female voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify this unknown voice.

The seven songs covered so far were penned by Saghar Nizami. But this song is penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Ghulam Haider is the music director.

I have not been able to get the lyrics right to my satisfaction at a few places. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blank/ suggest corrections in the lyrics wherever applicable.

With this song, all the eight songs of ‘Mehndi’ (1947) are covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEEE’D in the blog.
