Today’s song is from film ‘Anban’ (1944) (pronounced as un-bun). So far, only one song from this film has been discussed on our blog in 2011. This is, therefore, the second song from this film. No songs of this film are available anywhere like You Tube etc. Then, how did I get introduced to this song ? There is a story behind this.

Hullo to all Atulwaasis
Yesterday, 16thJune 2017, was the 97th birth anniversary of singer- music director-producer-director Hemant Mukherjee alias Hemant Kumar. He started out his music journey in 1935 on All India Radio with “Amar Ganete Ele Nabarupi Chirantanii” under the influence of his friend Subhas Mukhopadhayay. Hemant Da’s music career was primarily mentored by the Bengali musician, Sailesh Duttagupta. In his early life Hemant Da used to follow the famous Bengali singer Pankaj Mullick. For this he was nicknamed as “Chhoto Pankaj”. Sajjaad Hussain – a name that invokes a feeling of rare and precious stones. Treasures that are scarce, and extremely hard to come by. Treasures that are small in numbers to start with anyway. And treasures that are extremely valuable, like diamonds of unusual and endearing qualities. Diamonds imbued with qualities that invoke surprise in how the emotions blend with the words, that blend into the music, that is breathtaking at times. Treasures always number very few. Songs composed by Sajjaad Sb are such precious treasures, discoveries of the remaining few of which is always a titillating celebration for the aficionados.

The 9th of June is the birthday of our beloved Arunkumar Deshmukhji, often fondly referred to as our in-house encyclopaedia. 🙂
Arunji, it takes me great pleasure to wish you a very happy birthday on this occasion – and I say this on behalf of all Atulites for whom you are a very special person.

Veena, that is in the hand of Goddess Saraswati; veena, that is the source of all knowledge and all that is music in this creation.
Yes, the voice of Lata ji. A voice that is adorned in many a thousand ways, a voice that lives in the minds and memories through many a thousand songs, in Hindi films, in films of other regions, and songs that don’t belong to films. The legacy is a treasure. Quite so much has been written about this voice, my adding more would simply be repeating what has been said before. And much of that discussion is an overbearing analysis of the phases and careers, that are after all moot points, when arrayed against the qualities of the voice itself. That discussion is like ‘गूंगे की शक्कर’ – the description of the sweetness of sugar as expressed by a person who cannot speak. He would place the sugar on your palm, and tell you silently, to taste it, to eat it. After that tasting, no words are necessary, to discuss what sugar is. 🙂

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Today we will have a song from the 1957 L.V. Prasad directed Meena Kumari- Raj Kapoor- Shyama starrer ‘Sharada’ – written as ‘Shaarda’ by Atulji in the ‘List-of songs-moviewise’. It is mentioned as ‘Sharada’ in the filmography of Meena Kumari (a rule in English grammar says that proper nouns can be written with any spelling, specially there is no right or wrong spellings as far as Indian words are concerned).

Who was the first female music director in Hindi film Industry? The answer to this question has changed thrice during the last few years.
It was believed that Saraswati Devi (real name: Khorshed Minocher-Homji) was the first female music director who composed songs for ‘Jawaani Ki Hawa’ (1935), produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies. Subsequently, it was established that Jaddanbai, who composed the songs for ‘Talaash-e-Haq’ (1935) was the first female music director, her film having been released earlier than ‘Jawaani Ki Hawa’. It will be interesting to know as to which of the songs from these two films were recorded first on the respective film’s sound track.

5th June is celebrated as ‘World Environment Day’ all over the world every year. The theme for this year is “Connecting People to Nature“.
I am approaching today’s post in a different manner. Instead of going into the details of the environmental agencies, their history and purpose, the significant environmental issues being faced by humanity on this planet, etc. I am thinking of our Hindi films and their music. The nature is so intimately connected herein. We cannot imagine our Hindi Film Music without ‘connecting with nature’.
