Today (4 january 2013) is the birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy (4 January 1931 – 13 October 2004). To most moviewatchers, she was the eternally suffering Maa of Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor in several movies of 1970s, but that was only part of her impressive cv. She had made her debut an a movie actress in late 1940s and she acted as a leading lady in many movies throughout 1950s and early part of 1960s before easing into the roles of Bhabhi and later maa from late 1960s onwards. I find it curious to realise now that she at the age of 44, played the mother of Amitabh Bachchan (then aged 34) and Shashi Kapoor (then aged 38) in 1975 in Deewaar.

1960 saw the release of the famous film ‘Bambai Ka Babu’. With Dev Anand and Suchitra Sen in the lead and music by SD Burman, this film did well to stay put in the memory of the viewers and listeners. In the same year, another ‘Bambai’ film was released, that seemed to have disappeared without making any impact, and there is nothing one hears about it.

As I had mentioned in my post the day before, more news and information to share. Let me start by telling about the visitors we had in Delhi during the last four, five weeks. The first to come was Dr. M L Kapoor, from Suffolk, Virginia in the US. Dr. Kapoor is an avid lover of old Hindi films and film music. He is a diehard fan of Pankaj Mullick and Naushad. He has two cars, and the number plates of the cars carry the words ‘NAUSHAD’ and ‘PMULICK’. He is one of the guiding spirits behind the websites on KL Saigal, Pankaj Mullick and KC Dey. He is a doctor of internal medicine, now retired. His main area of interest is the films from New Theatres.

“Pocketmaar” (1956) was a Black and White movies production. It was directed by H Sa Rawail. The movie had Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, Sunder, Nadira, Gope, Bhagwan Sinha, Lalita Pawar, Tiwari, Kumud Tripathi etc in it.

This movie had eight songs in it. As many as seven songs from this movie have already been discussed.

“Khushboo” (1975) was based on a Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay story called “Pandit moshai”. This movie was produced under the banner of Tirupati Pictures Combine. Prasann Kapoor was the producer and Gulzar directed the movie. The movie had Jeetendra, Hemamalini, Master Raju Shrestha, Farida Jalal, Leela Mishra, Durga Khote, Sarika, Asrani, Chandrima Bhadhuri, Harish Magan, Sharmila Tagore in a special appearance, Pratimadevi, Devkishen, Sudhir Thakkar, Nasir, Bhola, Om Shivpuri etc in it.
