“Chunariya”(1948) was directed by Ravindra Dave for Kuldeep Pictures, Bombay. Mulkraj Bhakri had written the story, dialogues, screen-play and lyrics. For all practical purposes, Mulkraj Bhakri was the producer of the movie as well, though Kuldeep Sehgal was credited as producer and Lekhraj Bhakri as production controller. Almost all persons involved in the making of this movie were displaced from Lahore during partition and this movie was their attempt to establish themselves in Bombay film industry.

Shekhawati region of Rajasthan consists of the districts of Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and some parts of Jaipur and Nagaur districts. The region is well-known for its painted havelis and temples. I had travelled in Shekhawati region in February 2013 mainly to see the magnificent painted havelis. There are hundreds of such havelis, some abandoned, some still being used as residential houses and a few which have been converted into heritage hotels. There are extensively and intricately painted havelis of some of the industrialists like Birla, Singhania, Goenka, Jhunjhunwaala, Podar, Morarka, Modi etc.

Today, November 5, 2021 is the 13th Remembrance Day of producer-director, B R Chopra. I admire him for his courage to make films on sensitive and socially relevant issues at a time when most of other producers would have avoided such issues. As far as I know, B R Chopra became the director without working under any one of the well-known directors of his time or even working in any other departments of the film making which is laudable.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film-Devyani-1952.

This was the story of Kach and Devyani from Mahabharat. I like the various stories from our Epics Ramayan and Mahabharat. There are hundreds of subplots and stories in both these Holy books, in addition to the main stories. However, I like stories from the Mahabharat more than Ramayan. The reason is stories from Ramayana are simpler and involve good virtues like Love, Cooperation, Loyalty, truthfulness etc etc. These are desirable but have no links to today’s social structure. The stories from Mahabharat are built around the practical difficulties in day to day life, defeat of the evil at any cost and use of tact, diplomacy, revenge, punishment etc etc which are more interesting to read.

‘Sipahsalar’ (1956) was produced by F C Mehra under his banner, Eagle Films and was directed by Mohammed Hussain. The star cast included Shammi Kapoor and Nadira in lead roles supported by Kamal Kapoor, Sham Kumar, Samson, S Nazir, Cuckoo, Helen, Kumkum, Uma Dutt, Jagdish Kanwal, Rajan Kapoor etc. It is apparent from what I have seen from a few photographs of the films on the internet that the film belongs to the genre of costume drama.
