Hullo Atuldom

Today I did a tiny research with the resources available at my disposal. I have inferred that the music duo Kalyanji Anandji have scored music for most of the movies where Feroz Khan was in the lead; till the time of Kalyanji’s passing in 2000. In fact, I found two Feroz Khan starring movies, on our blog, that are on the threshold of being yippeee’d. One has two songs left, but the album of that movie shows that Kalyanji-Anandji have given music for three sequences where there is no song. I am sure one music piece has Helen burning the dance floor, that is as brilliant as is the theme music for that movie. So for today we leave that movie alone and concentrate on the one that is one short of yippeee-hood.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 20
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

It is like cherry picking a hit parade – the repeat songs are almost always the popular hit songs that have made a serious mark on the collective memory of the audiences and lovers of Hindi films and film songs. And this song is no exception. Rather this song has been so popular – with its catchy lyrics and a very hummable melody – that one hears this song being used in many different avatars outside of the film frame – remixes, revival melodies, even background music for recorded dance performances. One can find such samples online on YT.

“Kaajal”(1965) was a movie that I knew little about when I was growing up. I watched this movie in 1978 when my went to college and my movie watching spree began with a vengeance. Those days, I only liked “new” movies and songs and scoffed at “old” movies and songs. But I had heard about old movies, so I would go and watch them when no “new” movie was there for me to watch. The old movies tended to run to empty house and so buying tickets for these movies was not a problem. I wondered if a day will come in future when one would be able to watch “new” movies with the same ease, without needing to queue up and black marketeers having a field day. Believe it or not, today we are actually in that situation where one can buy tickets of even brand new movies without needing to form a queue in the movie hall.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 36
—————————————————————————

This day ten years ago (viz 11 june 2010) saw as many as five songs being covered. Discussing as many as five songs in a day was quite rare those day. This feat was achieved only four times in previous seven months !

Following five songs were overed on 11 june 2010:-

Song Movie title-Year Remarks
Jeena kyaa aji pyaar binaa Dhan Daulat – 1980 01 song posted (of 5)
Gayaa bachpan jo aayi jawaani Aankhon Aankhon Mein – 1972 All songs covered
Mere man ke diye Parakh-1960 All songs covered
Magar ae haseenaa e bekhabar Dholak-1951 All songs covered
Ham aankh michauli khelenge Khandaan-1942 All songs covered

It is interesting to note that four films (out of five) covered that day are already YIPPEED. “Dhan Daulat”(1980) was on the other end of the spectrum. No other song from this movie has been discussed in last ten years !

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 34
—————————————————————————

The rate of posting of songs in the blog ten years ago was quite similar to the present day rate of posting, even though things were obviously much different in 2010 than what they are now. This day ten years ago (6 june 2010) was a Sunday, when the final of French open tennis tournament was played and Rafael Nadal won his fifth French open title defeating Robin Söderling of Sweden in straight sets. Now a days, no sporting events are taking place.

I find it interesting to note that the world was suffering from the pandemic of Swine Flu between January 2009 till August 2010. But India was not affected as badly as we are today affected with Corona Virus. There was no lockdown of any kind those days, though night running of trains was suspended in Naxalite affected Orissa-Jharkhand-West Bengal region (SE Rly) those days after Maoist insurgents caused derailment of Jnaneshwari express on 28 may 2010. 148 passengers had died in this ghastly accident near Jhargram.

Today’s song is from film Raaj Tilak-1958.

This was a S.S.Vasan film from his Gemini Pictures, Madras. Film Raaj Tilak was a remake of the original popular film in Tamil-“Vanji Kottai Valiban”( The youth from Vanji Fort). It was loosely based on the famous adventure novel, “The Count of Monte Cristo”, written by Alexander Dumas and first published in 1844. Its Telugu version was titled “Vijay Kota Veerudu”and the Hindi version was Raaj Tilak.

AVM and Gemini, the two giants from Madras were keen on making Bi-Lingual (Tamil-Hindi/Tamil-Telugu,Telugu-Hindi) or Tri-lingual (Tamil-Telugu-Hindi) films to capture all the three big markets. Southern bosses took pleasure in engaging artistes from Bombay and in return Bombay artistes were happy to work in southern films, because they were disciplined, punctual and worked methodically. Their payments, staying arrangements and the treatment to Hindi artistes was very satisfying.
