Today’s song is from the film Shri Rambhakta Hanuman-1948.
The film was produced and directed by Homi Wadia for his own banner Basant Pictures. The film story was adapted from Valmiki Ramayan by Shivram Vashikar and the dialogues were by P.C. Joshi- who had also acted in the film in the role of Lakshman. The film starred Trilok Kapoor (Shri Ram), Prabhas Joshi (Lakshman), Sona Chaterjee (Seeta), Niranjan Sharma (Ravan), S.N.Tripathi (Hanuman), Dalpat Joshi, Amarnath and many others. The music was by S.N.Tripathi. This was his first role as Hanuman. He went on to do Hanuman’s role 6 more times.
Film Shri Rambhakta Hanuman-48 was the first of the Mythological films Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures had made. Due to the extraordinary success of religious films from Prakash Pictures, suddenly there was a spurt in making Mythological films. Though Prakash Pictures made hit films like Bharat Milap-42 and Ram Rajya-43, in their films, the entire focus was on Shri Ram and Seeta Mai. They did not give any importance to Hanuman in their films. When I checked the credits of these two films yesterday, I found that Hanuman’s name was not there in the credits and we do not know who did that role ! Sensing this as an opportunity, the business minded Wadia made a film on Hanuman as the central character.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
————————————————————————
(Debutant Movie- Batohi-1949)
I was specifically looking for a devotional song. While going through the Geet Kosh Volume –II (1941-1950), I come across this pleasant surprise which I am presenting here today.
I had come across this title ‘Batohi-बटोही’ in Geet Kosh (1941-1950) in the past under the list of Un-Released movies. (Those days the songs from this movie were not available on internet ).
Searching for word ‘‘Batohi-बटोही’ on this blog yields only one result. This word appears only in the famous song ‘kaun disaa mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa’ from “Nadiya Ke Paar”(1982)
Coming to the movie ‘Batohi-1949’, very less information is available about it in the Geet Kosh. The name of the director for this movie is not given. However some sources on internet mention the name of the director as Kumar Menon. He directed this movie for T.K. Screen Classics. The cast of this movie had Bharat Bhooshan, Indu Pal, Krishna Murari, Beena Pal, Kesari, Shivraj, Sapru and others.

Today’s song is from a Mythological story – Shuk Rambha-1953.
It was directed by an expert in such films – Dhirubhai Desai and the music was given by Manna Dey. Yes, you read it right. The MD of this film was Manna Dey. many playback singers secretly desired to become MDs, but only few dared and fewer still succeeded. It was a case of reverse too – like most MDs tried their hands at singing. Some dared and few succeeded.
It is seen that the human mind always craves for something done by his superiors, like actors wish to direct films, directors wish to produce films and producers want to direct films. Remember the Gujarati proverb- ” Jeno kaam teno thaay, bija kare so gotha khaay” ? ( जेनो काम तेनो थाय, बीजा करे सो गोता खाय ). Most artists wisely give up what they feel they are not skilled to do. Manna Dey, G.M.Durrani, S.D.Batish, Snehal Bhatkar, Amirbai Karnataki, Shanta Apte, Kishore Kumar and few others learnt the lesson in short time and went back to their real expertise field !

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
We have been presenting Shiv stuti songs on every Monday, right from the beginning of saawan maas. Saawan commenced one fortnight in advance in North India vis a vis central and southern parts of India. After Rakshabandhan, saawan is over in North India, but it still continues in central and southern parts of India.
The Monday of today (11 august 2025) is the fifth shraavan somvaar counting from the time saawan began in North India. However, it is the third shrawan somwar for the central-southern parts. This gives us another opportunity to have a shiv-stuti song here on the blog.
The song in this post is from the movie “Akhand Saubhaagyawati” directed by Rakesh Nahta for ‘Dhwani Prakash, Bombay’. He was also the producer of this movie. It had Reeta Bhaduri, Arvind Kumar, Kalpana Deewan, Chandrakant Pandya, Nalin Dave, Kanchan Mattu, Kamini Bhatiya, Krupadev Yanik, Javed Mishra, Chandrakant Thakkar, Vishnu Kumar Vyas, Master Bittoo and others. This movie ‘Akhand Saubhaagyawati’ was passed by Censor Board on 10.07.1981.

The worlds of film songs and the NonFilm Songs are totally different. Of course there was a time when people went for only NFS, but 1) that time film song records were not available like today and 2) that was a long time ago i.e. during the late 1920s to the 1940s. The set of people who liked NFS and collected these records or songs has long gone behind the curtain of the time !
Most lovers of music today are barely aware of a NFS which once made music lovers mad in the last mid century. There is no blame as times change, so do the trends and likings. Today, even classical vocal music is also in the background. Ask any film music lover 5 names of classical singers and most can not tell you. Here also no blame This is how the world takes turns. Public tastes change as per availability, like the way people dressed in olden times and modern times.
