As usual, I cannot keep away from Rafi songs for long. I stumbled upon this movie in the list of songs movie-wise and saw only 7 songs are posted out of 12. The movie is Mastani (1955), the middle of 50’s decade when Rafi Sahab was still finding his niche in the industry and was adding variety of flavourful spices in each new song, he sang for each new actor. The talent of instilling mischief and new murkiyan in the rendition, became the highlight of each music score, who ever be the composer. It also put the other male playback singers in the shade because none could compete. Not the old brigade of singers of 40’s, who sedate style of singing was soon to become obsolete. Mid 50’s was also the time when music score with Rafi sahab as solo male singer started.

Some thought he could find his core strength in playback and people can bracket him into a comic singer, or a theme song singer, or faqeer baba singer. But it was soon clear, that there was no genre of song that the MD could compose and Rafi Sahab could not sing. This was the voice of hero, in romance and sadness, voice of the character actors, and voice anyone else having a song to sing in the films script.

Just because I like old films and claim to know about the old films more than others, I do not consider New films worthless. Since the beginning – first the stage dramas and then the films always reflected what the current social scenes, problems and the aspirations of the young generation of the times showed. Old time films, to start with, were mainly made on Mythological stories and Folk tales. Later the focus shifted to Social themes. Still later it was music and then it was comedy and entertainment.

A recent anniversary that I had been preparing for – and missed on account of some travel engagements – is the remembrance day for the exceptional poet and lyricist – Bharat Vyas. He passed away in 1982, on 5th July.

The mention of this name brings to mind names of films such as ‘Chandralekha’ (1948), ‘Rim Jhim’ and ‘Saawan Aaya Re’ (both 1949), ‘Janamashtami’ and ‘Hamaara Ghar’ (both 1950), ‘Parineeta’ (1953), ‘Do Aankhen Baraah Haath’ and ‘Amar Singh Rathod’ (both 1957), also ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’ from 1957, ‘Samraat Chandragupt’ (1958), ‘Bedard Zamaana Kya Jaane’ and ‘Goonj Uthi Shehnaai’ (1959), ‘Navrang’ and ‘Raani Roopmati’ (again 1959), ‘Angulimaal’, ‘Veer Durgadas’ and ‘Saaranga’ (all 1960), ‘Jai Chittod’ and ‘Pyaar Ki Pyaas’ (1961), ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan’ (1963), ‘Boond Jo Ban Gayi Moti’ (1967) – and many more films with many a memorable song.

‘Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ (1971) is different from the serial ‘Kyun Ki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ which came a long time after the movie. The movie was an all-round entertainer. We would not get anything less in a movie where Om Prakash heads the cast and the hero (Sanjay Khan in this case) plays a second fiddle to Om Prakash and Jagdeep. Plus, when the mirch-masalas Lalita Pawar and Shashikala spice up the whole setup, it is but natural that the lead cast (Sanjay Khan and Leena Chandavarkar) become secondary – their presence being needed for the romantic interludes.

‘Pooja Ke Phool’ from 1964, is a production from AVM, Madras. It is directed by A Bheemsingh. True to the colors of the family dramas emanating from the south, this film is not much different that the regular run-of-the-mill emotionally loaded films coming from there. This film however has a slight sinister twist, in that a murder is part of the storyline. There is a certain amount of drama built around the trial in the court and the effort to nail the true culprit – a task that is made extremely challenging by the fact that the hero Shankar (roled played by Dharmendra) repeatedly asserts in the court that he admits his guilt and should be punished. The heroine Shanti (role played by Mala Sinha) who is the lawyer defending Shankar, has her work cut out for her, to get the hero freed, when he himself doesn’t want to be.

“मैं लेखक हूँ, लेखक”।

The year – 1956. The film – that zany, crazy, fun and pathos filled runaway hit titled ‘Funtoosh’. Remembered today for a fantastic portfolio of songs. And a very sensitive and effective performance by Dev Anand.

The film has a noisy opening inside a mental asylum. Dev Anand, one of the inmates, is being released to the outside world. He knows himself, as do others, only as ‘funtoosh’. Apparently he has endeared everyone in that blessed place, for when he leaves, everyone offers him a gift, piling him and his pockets with trinkets, small tokens, a hat, a pair of sunglasses, garlands, rings and what not. From a world that is upside down compared to the outside, ‘funtoosh’ makes a grand exit on a tricycle, smoking a pipe.

Missing Films of 1960s – 42
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

IS Johar had a lead of three years over Raj Kapoor. His film ‘Mera Naam Johar’, released in 1967, preceded the great showman’s masterpiece ‘Mera Naam Joker’ which came in 1970. It is a matter of conjecture now, as to who inspired whom. 🙂

Today (23rd July 2017) is the death anniversary of one of the most popular comedian artistes of yesteryear, Mehmood (29 September 1932 – 23 July 2004).  On this occasion I’d like to pay a humble tribute to him.

To call Mehmood just a comedian is not to do him full justice. For, apart from doing very popular comedy roles, he was also a producer and director in his own right. And he also did playback for some songs Not just that, he even wrote for a couple of films  – so, all things considered, he must be considered quite an all rounder. Of course his comedy roles are what made him a big star in the industry and these are what he is best known for.
