Today (23rd July 2017) is the death anniversary of one of the most popular comedian artistes of yesteryear, Mehmood (29 September 1932 – 23 July 2004).  On this occasion I’d like to pay a humble tribute to him.

To call Mehmood just a comedian is not to do him full justice. For, apart from doing very popular comedy roles, he was also a producer and director in his own right. And he also did playback for some songs Not just that, he even wrote for a couple of films  – so, all things considered, he must be considered quite an all rounder. Of course his comedy roles are what made him a big star in the industry and these are what he is best known for.

We in this blog had two new resolutions and I had decided to stick to them as long as I can. One was to introduce a “new” movie daily and another was to to close the account of another movie by YIPPying it.

We are in may 2017, and both these resolutions have finally seen breaks. For instance, there was no YIPPEE song on 13 may 2017, a day that had only one post, a post that introduced a “new” song. The string on YIPPEE posts was in fact broken a few days earlier on 6 may itself when I posted a song that I thought was YIPPYing its movie but I was wrong. The “new” post string had got broken a while ago.

Atul ji’s 10K Song Milestone Celebrations – 10
———————————————————————-

Congratulations Atul ji for this unparalleled effort of ten thousand posts. You are truly an inspiration! We have a lot to learn from you and Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all that you do.

Today, I write this post with a gamut of emotions running through my mind. I still remember the year was 2008. A team of music lovers including me had got together and launched the website on www.geetadutt.com It had been a labour of love for us to make a digital temple dedicated to our beloved singer. We had spent countless hours discussing over the internet on what all should be put on the website and then doing the needful to make it happen. Our small team was very dedicated and the beauty of all of it was that we all had never met till then.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ए’
“एक एक एक, एक चाय की प्याली”

This song will definitely remind you of another very popular Rafi solo song. No prizes for guessing; the similarity of rendition of the first line is a dead giveaway. Yes, you will recognize the song immediately. Both songs are equally fast paced. however, after the first line, the similarity ends. The other song has already been identified as a Johnny Walker song, based on information provided in comments by one of our readers. My strong hunch is that even this song should be a Johnny Walker song. His name appears in the cast of actors of this film.

I have mentioned it in the past that one can often make guesses about me from the number of posts appearing in the blog in a day and also from the length of posts made by me.

Mukesh and his Composers – 9
————————————————

“Houston, we have a problem.”

This famous quote from the Hollywood film ‘Apollo 13’ (1995) pertains to the problem on board NASA’s unsuccessful mission to the moon. Though there is a different version to the line from NASA’s actual transcript, the phrase has now become part of everyday language for reporting any kind of problem.

Genius of Jaidev – 27
———————————-

Jaidev had tried a number of humorous songs in his first film ‘Joru Ka Bhai’ (1955). In fact, the theme song ‘Saari Khudaayee Ek Taraf’ with S Balbir and S D Batish, and ‘Dharam Par Mar Jaana Koi Badi Baat Nahin Hai’ with Kishore Kumar and S Balbir, set both these qawaalli type songs in the humorous mood that the situation may have demanded.

If I were to ask you to let me post a special song for a special anniversary that is already belated by six days, as opposed to waiting for 360 more days to post this celebration song, what would you say?  And if I told you that the anniversary is really special, extra special; then?  I have a confident feeling that you will say – ok, well, go ahead, post the special song, and tell us what the celebration is.

And now, taking this feeling of confidence further, I now know that I have your full support in posting this special song today, no matter that we are six days delayed in making this celebration.

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 3
—————————————————–

There is something very special about his voice.  Not that other thespians of the industry are any way less impressive.  Every actor and actress have their own unique styles and expressions, and many of them have become memorable across the decades.  The sounds and the words sometimes combine together to leave such an imprint on the mind of the audiences, that certain dialogues of certain artists become popular and become part of the current idiom.
