Mela (1971) is a movie I remember from my early days. I believe that , inspite of the Rajesh Khanna wave threatening to drown every non-Rajesh movie in those days, this movie did manage to do well at the box-office. Its songs also became pretty popular too, especially the Rafi-Lata duet, “Rut hai milan ki”.

Like most music lovers, I tend to know only about the better known songs from most movies and I am often in the dark about songs that failed to make it big. Often, one can come across special songs even among these forgotten songs.

Though I have heard this song from “Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai” (1960) several times, I never gave it any serious thought. But now, when I tried to find more details about the song, I found that this song has to be a very special song indeed.

Songs and dances play a very important role in Hindi movies. In olden days, lead actors were needed to sing and dance. Once playback singing began, actors were thankfully no longer required to sing their own songs, but they were still required to dance. That is especially true for actresses and proficiency in dancing was an important skill for them.

“Shabnam”(1949) is a movie starring Kamini Kaushal, Dilip Kumar, Cuckoo, Jeewan etc. This movie seems to have lots and lots of songs in it that get played in the movie one after the other. Of course, I have not seen this movie and my observation is based on the number of songs that this movie has. As it is, I have discussed four songs from this movie and there seems to be many more songs in this movie.

“Taj”(1956) had virtually the same team as “Naagin” (1954). The makers of “Taj” (1956) obviously hoped to replicate the commercial success of “Naagin” 91954) by doing that. I am not sure how much of a commercial success “Taj” (1956) was. It was certainly nowhere close to “Naagin” (1954), that is for sure.
