Nightingale Noorjehan – 3
—————————

‘Phoolon mein nazar yeh kaun aaya’ is Noorjehan’s fourth song from the 1946 Film ‘Hamjoli’ to appear in the blog. one song from this movie ‘yeh desh hamara pyaara’ was already discussed earlier on this blog before I took up the task of discussing her songs in the blog.

Somehow I missed seeing this film, as till 1949 I was in a small town, where the touring cinema used to come once in a while. After coming to Mumbai (then Bombay), in 1949, I started seeing cinema with a vengeance. To see films which were not the current runners I used to visit the locations, where second and third run films were shown in a small group of theaters. They were in an area known as Pilhouse, (from original Play House), generally prohibited area for students and so called ‘decent people’, as it was in the ‘red light district’. The system in those theaters was very convenient for any time visiters, as you could buy a ticket and enter at any time and could sit through the next show to complete the beginning of the film which you had missed initially. You could even sit till the end of the film if you wished. So many musical films I had sat through and had seen them one and a half times!! I still repent that I could not see some of Noorjehan’s films like Hamjoli, Badi Maa, Dost, Duhayee etc during that period..

Today (9 july 2015) is the 77th birth anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar (9 July 1938 – 6 November 1985). In a movie world where most actors were afraid of playing roles other than the ones they were typed cast in, Sanjeev Kumar would play any kind of roles, without worrying about his past image as an actor. He would play the roles that other heroes would not touch with a barge pole, and he would carry them off with aplomb. He had played roles of mentally challenged man (in Khilona-1970), Deaf and dumb (in Koshish), father of an actor older than him (father of Shashi Kapoor in Trishul), Husband, father as well as father in law of the same actress (Jaya Bhaduri) in different movies, etc. And I have not yet mentioned his role of Thakur in Sholay (1975). In “Naya Din Nayi Raat”, he played nine roles !

In brief, Sanjeev Kumar was an actor who never allowed himself to be typedcast. He accepted any kinds of roles, not worrying how that role was going to affect his image. And he came up with flying colours in all these roles.

Today (9 july 2015) is the 33rd death anniversary of D N Madhok (22 october 1902- 9 july 1982). He was one of the major first generation lyricists in Hindi movies. In addition, he also wrote screenplays and dialogues of several movies and even directed movies.

A look at her face (in the photos online), and it is difficult to believe that she is a grandmother of four years now.  Her daughter, Riddhima, gave birth to a girl child in 2011.  Rewinding further back, her wedding in 1980 to her frequent co-star Rishi Kapoor, seems like a news one read in the paper just a few weeks ago.  At 57 today, her smile and the bright countenance belies her age.

Wishing a very happy birthday to Neetu Singh today (8th July).

The name Neetu Singh conjures up an image of a very bright and charming and ever smiling beauty. She started her life in Bollywood at a very young age – she was only 8 when we see her name appear as a child actor, in two 1966 films – ‘Suraj’ and ‘Dus Lakh’.  However, the lasting memories are of her double role of twin sisters, separated on account of their parents’ discord, as Baby Sonia, in “Do Kaliyan” (1968). The image of a small child girl with double plaited hair [‘do choti’ sounds better, no? ;)] is still retained in our mind’s eye singing “Bachche Mann Ke Sachche” in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.

The stock photograph that is available shows a very suave and handsome Sikh gentleman.  The beard is neatly packed, the moustache is starched razor sharp, and the turban is a perfect construct.  Six feet plus, with a very fair skin – all attributes put together make up a very attractive and becoming personality.  By his own admission, he labels himself to be a romantic – and that he had to be in love to be able to create music.  The others called him a “ladies man”.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 23
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘Aankhen’ was released in 1950.  Most people remember it for being the debut film of music director Madan Mohan.  Amongst all the wonderful songs that caught the attention of the listeners, there is this lovely melody in the voice of Meena Kapoor, that really steals away your heart – “Mori Atariya Pe Kaaga Bole, Mora Jiya Doley, Koi Aa Rahaa Hai”.  For me, it is this one song that makes this film and its music memorable.  This is one of the two songs that Bharat Vyas wrote for this film.

Atul often says that inspite of the blog having already clocked five-digit number of songs, there are still plenty of very good songs out there that have still not found their way to the blog.

In my opinion, that is not a bad thing, because it keeps our journey of discovery interesting and exciting. Compiling songs on this blog is as much about the journey as about the destination – and we take as much pleasure in the journey as in getting closer to our destination. We have milestones, minor and major, that keep beckoning to us to approach them – and as we pass each milestone, we not only celebrate it but also set our sights on the next one.

What do film stars do when they retire or stop working ?

Actually, the artistes can be divided into two parts. One, those who stop working voluntarily or retire by choice and Two, those who stop getting work and are compelled to retire. Of course the first category has definite plans post retirement, so they do what was planned. However those who stop getting work or are compelled to call it a day have either to fall back on their savings or do something else to survive.
