The first five years of Mukesh’s career, from 1941 to 1945 were sketchy, and not very productive. The available records show that he sang 14 songs in six films during these five years. His singing did not capture much attention, and Mukesh was a discouraged man, contemplating to leave Bombay and return home to Delhi. But then in 1945, ‘Pehli Nazar’ happened, under the baton of Anil Biswas. And after the release of ‘Pehli Nazar’, Mukesh’s career was on the up and up.

“Sakshi Gopal” (1957) was ratnadeep Pictures production. It was directed by Balchandra Shukla and Ramnik Vyas. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Nanda, Madan Puri, Niranjan Sharma, Achla Sachdev, Chaman Puri, Narbada Shanker, Manju etc in it.

I had heard this song “rang le aayenge roop le aayenge” many times during its days in 1970s. This song was quite a popular song of its time, but all this while I was not aware about the movie this song was from. It is only now that I have come to know that the song was from a movie called “Bhanwar” (1976). This by now obscure movie was an Evershine Pictures production. It was produced by Shyam Keswani and Nandu Mirani. Bhappi Sonie was the director. The story of this song was written by Gulshan Nanda who was a very popular Hindi language pulp fiction novelist of those days.

“Krorepati” (1961) was a Saigal Brothers production. It was produced by Omprakash Saigal and directed by Mohal Saigal. The movie had Kisore Kumar, Shashikala, Kum Kum, K. N. Singh, Anoop Kumar, Mirza Musharaff, Radhakishan, Haroon, S. Bannerjee, Ramlal, Shamlal, Brahm Bharadwaj, Daya Devi, Pal Sharma, Prem, Dev Chand etc in it.

Well one of these days, we may come to the bottom of this ocean of melody. Well yes, after all, the music that was created in the first four decades – has been created, and it is not possible to add to it anymore. And so one day we would have discovered all that is there to discover, and would have discussed it here on this blog. But as of now, there is still so much out there in front of us that thankfully, it is still going to be many years before this treasure gets exhausted. And I am sure there is enough for a lifetime. 🙂
