In the long string of ‘Ustad’ films, here is one that is a new entrant for this blog. ‘Birju Ustad’ is a 1964 film from the banner of Movie Miracles, Bombay, directed by Manu Desai. The cast of actors is almost the standard fare – Sheikh Mukhtar and Chandrashekhar are in this movie. ‘Shabistaan’ (1951) – the film that saw the sensational and tragic end of a very young and handsome star, who had broken into the popular imagination of the cinegoers just two or three years earlier. Called by some as the Eroll Flynn of Hindi cinema, Shyam was all of 31 years old when he died following the injuries sustained in a fall from horseback while shooting for this film. Historians have speculated that the course of Hindi cinema in the 1950s would have been very different, had this accident not happened.

Well, yes, there is a film by the name ‘Great Show of India’. Released in 1958, it is a social drama from the banner of Chitra Bharati, Bombay. By some accounts, it appears to be a story built around a circus company. I request our more knowledgeable team members and readers to please add more information about this film. The film is directed by C M Trivedi and Chandrakant. The cast of actors includes Kamini Kaushal, Mahipal, Tiwari, Maruti, Kamal Kapoor, Mirza Musharraf, Moni Chatterjee, Kamal, Jugnu, Gamdiya, Bhujbal Singh, Reva Rakshit.

“Ek Do Teen” (1953) was a Shorey Films Production. After the success of his “Ek Thhi Ladki” (1949), Roop Shorey made “Ek Do Teen” (1953) with a similar story line and similar team. He in fact would make movies on the same storyline for the rest of his movie making career till 1970s, but would never be able to replicate the success of “Ek Thhi Ladki” (1949) again.

The Voice Of Mukesh #8

It is well known that the film that really launched the career of Mukesh was the 1945 film ‘Pehli Nazar’. And in this film, the most enduring sound has been the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, sung by Mukesh. Apart from this timeless and iconic song, Mukesh has sung three more song in this film. One more solo song, and two duets with Naseem Akhtar. The solo song is “Tai Kar Ke Badi Door Se Purpech Dagariyaa”, a light hearted song of a young heart in search of love. The duet is the title song “Laga Pehli Nazar Ka Teer”. These three songs are now already present on this blog.
