I have discussed songs from a 1959 movie called “Kangan”. It turns out that there was another movie of the same name that was released exactly two decades before this movie. This older movie, viz “Kangan” (1939) had Ashok Kumar and Leela Chitnis in lead roles.

“Shakuntala” (1943) is easily a milestone movie in the annals of Hindi movies. It was the very first movie of Rajkamal Chitramandir that V Shantaram had founded. This was the first time that V Shantaram collaborated with Vasant Desai as music director and Jayshree as the leading lady. He in fact fell in love with Jayshree and married her during that time. This movie was a big success and our resident expert Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh informs us that this movie had run for 104 weeks (viz two years) in a single movie hall namely Swastik Cinema of Bombay.

When one listens to the songs of the golden era, one realises that the overall quality of the songs was quite high. Not just the big name music directors, even small time music directors were creating quality stuff. The only difference between big names and small names was marketability, otherwise qualitywise, even music directors confined to B and C grade movies were just as good as the A grade music directors.

Most nice songs usually become popular. Or is it really so ? There is much legwork involved before the songs of a movie can become popular. The movie, as well as its songs need to arouse the curiosity of public before their release. For that the movie and its songs need to be marketed. In case the movie has saleable stars and the movie is made by a well known production house with deep pockets, then the songs of that movie stand a good chance of being heard.

“Rail Ka Dibba” (1953) was one of the very first movies of Shammi Kapoor. Of course, he was nowhere close to realising his potential and discovering his identity in this movie. For that he would have to wait for another four years.

I just realised two facts. One fact is that the hair of leading ladies in Hindi movies play an important part in Hindi movies, especially in songs. when the Hero needs to sing a song in praise of her, what are the things about her that he can mention? He will sing about her face- likening it to Chaand(Moon), he will sing about her eyes, likening them to deep lakes. Another important body part that find much mention in the paens that hero sings for the lady are her hairs, which are called “zulf” in Hindi song parlance and they are often likened to Ghata (viz black rain bearing clouds). Heroine being compared to moon, lakes, cloud ! Hindi movie lyricists must have paid enough attention in their geography classes, it would seem to me, at least when these geographical topics were being discussed.
