“डूबी नैय्या आके किनारे”
Continuing with the alpha series of songs by Rafi Sb, I present today a lesser heard sad song from the early years of his career. The year is 1948. The young singer is just finding a foothold in the industry. The film song that will become his first popular hit happened this year – “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye. . .” (from the film ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’). Today’s song is from the film Mast Qalandar-55. It is sung by Shamshad Begum, Rafi and Master Sonik alongwith chorus. The mukhada of the song ” Mast qalandar dama dam” is quite a misleading one, as it has nothing to do with famous Punjabi/Sindhi qawali Dama dam mast qalandar. The phrase has been used here to describe a carefree man. This seems to be a street dance, sung to entertain the onlookers.
