Today’s song is from a very old film -Jeevan Prabhat-1937.
The film was made by Bombay Talkies. It was directed by Franz Osten. The music was by Saraswati Devi and the Lyricist was J.S.Casshyap. The film was Debut film for the lead actor Kishore Sahu and actress Renuka Devi. The cast included Devika Rani, Kishore Sahu, Mumtaz Ali, Maya Devi, Chandraprabha (sister of Saraswati Devi), Renuka Devi, Prithviraj Kapoor and many others.
In the initial era of Talkie films, Calcutta’s New Theatres and Poona’s Prabhat were the most well known filmmakers. They used to make films on social issues. Particularly, Prabhat was famous for keeping their films centred on the Reform themes like,Dowry, Child Marriage, Second Marriage, Cast difference etc.From the mid 30s one more company came into limelight and that was Bombay Talkies- founded by Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. They also followed the trend and films on social issues like Untouchability, illiteracy etc were made.

In the first three episodes of the series, we listed actresses whose names begin with the first three letters of the alphabet and who had lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. They we went on to cover a song that was lip synced by another acresses whose name began with the same letter and who had not lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
The exercise of finding a “new” actress whose name begins with a particular letter is being increasingly difficult. The three “new” actresses who made their debuts in the blog (as far as lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is concerned) were Anju Mahendru, Bhanupriya and Chandrakala.
In this episode, we arrive at the letter D. There are only five actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.

‘Pyaar Deewaana’ (1972) was produced and directed by Samar Chatterjee who also wrote and acted in the film. The cast included Kishore Kumar, Mumtaz, Padma Khanna, Iftekhar, S Banerjee, Shefali, Samson, Moni Chatterjee, S K Sham, Rajnibala, Satish Arora, Sunder etc. The film is a light hearted family drama.
The film was in the making for a long time and the songs were recorded sometime in mid-1960s. The shooting of the film started with the title, ‘Mr Buddhu’ which was subsequently changed to ‘Zindagee Phir Muskaayee’. It was only at the time of the release, the title was changed to ‘Pyaar Deewaana.(Source: ’Kishore Kumar-The Ultimate Biography’ by Anirudh Bhattacharjee and Parthiv Dhar, 2022).

The film was produced by National Studios, Bombay and it was directed by Mehboob Khan. The Music Director was Anil Biswas. The songwriter was Dr. Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri. The story and dialogues were by Wazahat Mirza. The cast of the film included Sardar Akhtar, Surendra, Yakub, Harish, Arun Ahuja (Govinda’s father), Jyoti, Vatsala Kumthekar, Sunalini Devi, kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi and others.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
#Sureelee Suman – Suman Kalyanpur – 28.01.1937 – 31.05.2026) #
Suman Kalyanpur the ‘Sureelee Suman’ of Hindi Film Music, and many regional languages music passed away on 31st May 2026. She was born on 28th January 1937. The news of her passing away came as a shock to music lovers. I got this news first on a WhatsApp group which I did not want to believe. When I checked on internet there was no such news. It was only on the next day that several sources carried this news and this bad news was confirmed.
As a music lover I had been listening to the voice of Suman Kalyanpur from early childhood. After coming into contact with this blog, I got the opportunity to share many of her songs and I enjoyed listening to these songs in the process of preparing their writeups.

With this song, we reach the single Nelson (as Hermes in cricket) of this series – 111 – “Na Taaj Chahiye Na Takht Chahiye” by Asha Bhosle is the next song in our rare/rarely heard songs series. This song is written by Hasrat Jaipuri and composed by Shankar Jaikishan. It is from the film “Saazish” (1975).
Saazish-1975’ was produced and directed by Kalidas for ‘Maya Movietone, Bombay’. It had Saira Banu, Dharmendra, Dev Kumar, Rajendra Nath, Madan Puri, Jagdish Raj, Murad, David, Helen etc. Iftekhar and Paintal make special appearance in this movie.

“Dharm Patni-1953” was directed by Ramchandra Thakur for ‘Harishchandra Pictures’. It was produced by Harishchandra Rao and it was passed by Censor Board on 21.11.1953. It has Nirupa Roy, Mahipal, Moti Sagar, Durga Khote, Yashodhara Katju, Neeroo, Mona, Kumar and Gope, Bhagwan Das, Dalpat, Eruch Tarapore, Hamid Majnu, Dewaskar, Maqbool, Deepak Naidu, Parvati Bai, Anwari, Vijaybala and R.S. Diwan. Actor Bhagwan made a guest appearance in this movie and was mentioned in the titles of the movie as ‘The Great Guest Artist’. Story & Dialogues of this movie was written by Dhananjay and Screenplay was written by Darshan. Editing of this movie was done by Baburao Barodkar. This movie has six songs which were written by Bharat Vyas (four songs) and Shewan Rizvi (two songs). Music for this movie as composed by Jamal Sen. The playback singers for this movie are Madhubala Zaveri, Asha Bhonsle, Mubarak Begam and Sulochana Kadam.

Today’s song is from a 90 year old film – Manmohan-1936.
The film was made by Sagar movietone and it was the 3rd Directorial film for Mehboob Khan. The music was by Ashok Ghosh, a very well known name in Bangla filmdom- who had a very enthusiastic and talented assistant- Anil Biswas. The cast of the film consisted of Miss Bibbo, Surendra (his 2nd film), Yaqub, Ashalata (real name Mehrunnisa, who later married Anil Biswas), Ram Marathe, Zia Sarhadi, Bhudo Advani and many others. Lyricist, dialogue writer and story writer was Zia Sarhadi who also did a small role in this film.
You will be surprised if I tell you that this film would not have been made if K L Saigal was not acting in films of New Theatres in Calcutta ! Strange, but true ! Let us see how….
