#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

Today’s song is from the ‘1969’ movie ‘Sambandh’.

This movie had made its debut on the blog long back on 19.07.2009. However it still remains unYIPPEED.

“Sambandh-1969” had as many as twelve songs in it, all penned by Kavi Pradeep.

Today 6th February’ 2023 is one hundred and eighth birth anniversary of Kavi Pradeep (6 February 1915 – 11 December 1998).

As a tribute to him on this occasion, I present a song from this movie ‘Sambandh-1969’.

Lyrics for the song were sent by Prakashchandra for the ‘BTYC challenge’ of this movie when it was due in ‘2019’.

“Sambandh-1969” was directed by Ajay Biswas for ‘S.M.F. Syndicate Productions, Bombay’.

It had Deb Mukherji, Anjana, Pradeep Kumar, Anita Dutt, Sulochana, Vijaya Chaudhary, Achala Sachdev, Abhi Bhattacharya, Nana Palsikar, Ulhas, Leela Mishra, Rani, Janaki Das, Manik Dutt, Sajjan and others.

This movie was based on Bangla Novel ‘Pratham Prem’ by Achintya Kumar Sengupta.

This movie had twelve songs written by Kavi Pradeep and composed by O.P. Nayyar.

Here is the list of all songs from this movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970).

(*only the video link contains Hemant Kumar`s aalaap at the starting of the song)

Today’s song is the penultimate song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

It is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and on screen it is Deb Mukherji lip-syncing this song. This song is a party song. Deb Mukherji is grief-stricken and on insistence by his family members and Anjana Mumtaz he comes up with this song. The humming in the starting of this song is in the voice of Hemant Kumar which is performed on screen by Pradeep Kumar whom Deb Mukherji is remembering before singing his part.

Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Abhi Bhattacharya, Achala Sachdev, Nana Palsikar, Anjana Mumtaz, Raani, Vijaya Choudhary, Milon Mukherji and others.

Lyrics of the song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Let us listen to this song now …

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
(Birth Anniversary – Shyamal Mitra – A tribute)

Today 14th Janunary’2023 is the ninety-fourth birth anniversary of yesteryears Singer and Music Director Shyamal Mitra.

He was born on 14th January’1929 and passed away on 15th November’1987 at the age of only fifty-eight years.

He was a known name as a singer and music director in Bengali movies and he was one of the stalwarts of the Bengali Film Industry with Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey.
While he had sung songs for many Bengali movies and composed music for many he also had composed many non-film songs in Bengali.

As far as composing music for Hindi movies is concerned he had composed music for only a few Hindi films only. They are (in alphabetical order) ‘Amaanush-1975’, ‘Anand Ashram-1977’, ‘Bandie-1978’, ‘Mamtaa-1977’, and ‘Safed Jhoothh-1977’.

As a tribute to him on his birth anniversary today I am presenting a song from the ‘1977’ movie ‘Aanand Aashram’.
It was directed by Shakti Samanta for his home production ‘Shakti Films’.

This movie had Ashok Kumar, Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Utpal Dutt, Asit Sen, Anita Guha, Manik Dutt, Chandrima Bhaduri, Master Alankar, Manik, C.S. Dubey, Samar Rai, Amal, Mukund, Ratan, Jyoti, Master Ravi, Kumari Moushumi, Baby Shweta and others.

Actress Prema Narayan had a guest appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by Sailajananda Mukhopadhya and dialogues were written by Kamleshwar.
Editing of this movie was done by Bijoy Chowdhury.

Shakti Samanta who produced and directed this movie also wrote the screenplay of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.10.1977.

“Aanand Aashram” has six songs – all written by Indeevar and composed by Shyamal Mitra.

Here is the list of songs this movie has.

05 Aa … tere liye maine sabko chhoda tu hi chhod ke chal di Kishore Kumar
06 Tum itni sundar ho saari duniya deewaani hogi Yesudas, Preeti Sagar

Two well-known songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog as mentioned above.

Today’s song is a ‘stage mujra song’ which is performed on screen by the beautiful Prema Narayan. It seems to be happening at a family function in the movie where Uttam Kumar, Utpal Dutt, Sharmila Tagore, Anita Guha, C.S. Dubey and others are seen watching and enjoying this song dance performance.

Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Lyrics are by Indeevar and the composition is by Shyamal Mitra.

Lyrics of the song were sent by Prakashchandra.

Let us pay our tributes to Shyamal Mitra on his birth anniversary today and listen to one of his compositions – this song from ‘Aanand Aashram-1977’.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Birthday celebration of Atulites)
——————————————-——————————

Welcome all to this first post of mine in this New Year 2023.

Once again wishing all a very ‘happy and musical ‘2023’.

Today’s song is a party song and the reason is the celebration of birthday of two Atulites Peevesie’s Mom ji and Pradeep Raghunathan ji. We wish both of them a very happy birthday and a healthy, prosperous, peaceful and ‘entertaining’ 🙂 life (I hope they will like this) ahead.

For today’s occasion I explored many songs particularly looking for ‘birthday song’, ‘saalgirah songs’, ‘nazraana songs’, ‘party songs’ etc. and sticking to the ‘seventies’ I finally selected this song from the movie ‘Anpadh-1978’ which I had come across in recent months.

“Anpadh-1978” was directed by S.M. Sagar for ‘Adhikar International, Bombay’.

S.M. Sagar was also the producer of this movie.

It had Ashok Kumar, Parikshit Sahni, Zarina Wahab, Vijayendra, Brahmachari, Meena T., Master Innu, Preeti Ganguly, Deven Verma, Aruna Irani and others.

Sarika plays the ‘title role’ in this movie.

Asha Parekh, Anwar Hussain, Asit Sen, Kundan, Birbal, Chandrashekhar and Maruti had a friendly appearance in this movie.

Story of this movie was written by R.S. Varma. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie was written by Rafi Ajmeri.
Editing of this movie was done by Waman Rao (should be Waman Rao Bhonsle I think?).

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 03.08.1978.

This movie has five songs – written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (three songs) and Gauhar Kanpuri (one song). Lyricist’s name for one song is not mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). (*However, the titles of the movie clearly mention only two names as lyricists of this movie).
Music for this movie was composed by Hemant Bhonsle.

Here is the list of songs of this movie.

SNo Song Title Lyricist Singer/s Posted On
01 Naghme gaao kaliyaan barsaao Majrooh Kishore Kumar, chorus
02 Ae ji kaho kya haal hai Majrooh Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar
03 Allah miyaan jodi salaamat rakhna Not mentioned Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi
04 Ghar ke andar ammi abba Gauhar Kanpuri Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi
05 Salaamat raho tum Majrooh Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar 14.10.2013

One song from this movie has been posted earlier on the blog on 14.10.2013. Today’s song is the second song from this movie to be posted on the blog.

As mentioned above, today’s song is party song (and not exactly a birthday song) sung by Kishore Kumar.

On screen, Vijayendra and Brahmachari are seenlip syncing the song in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Also present in the picturisation of the song are Parikshit Sahni (who plays a doctor in this movie and this party is being organised in his honor for a successful critical operation that he has carried out), Zarina Wahab, Preeti Ganguly, Ashok Kumar and many others.

Let us now listen to today’s song and wish Peevesie’s Mom ji and Pradeep ji a very happy birthday today.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet #
—————————————–
(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri# 11– The magic of Bappi Da & Kishore Kumar)

We still have one day to go to enter the new year ‘2023’. However, celebrations have started in other parts of the world and generally the joyful atmosphere prevails in this part too. For many people the ‘new year fever’ begins from the day of ‘Christmas’ and continues till first week of January in the new year.

For many like me everyday is new day and a new beginning. It begins with music everyday and ends with music every day while the daily routine & activities continues including functions at individual workplaces.

We cannot say that all may be in the same jovial mood. Many might be in sombre mood for one reason or another. While some people may be celebrating, others might be performing duty. People of armed forces and law enforcing agencies are cases in point.

At my workplace the principal employer is celebrating annual day, so they arranged a sports day and conducted matches on 25th Dec and the remaining matches are to be held on 31st Dec. Then on 30th they arranged a ‘special lunch’ for all including workmen, as well as ‘awards’ for services and discipline at the end of the day.

However, my department i.e., the people working in the Warehouse had to back-off from participating in sports and all other recreational activities due to an audit planned in the first week of the new year.

Everybody of us will be working on saturday (31st) and Sunday(first day of the year) compulsorily, while all others will be celebrating on these two days that happen to be natural holidays.

Nevertheless me and my colleagues accompanying me in everyday travel from home to office and office to home are going to celebrate with ‘music’ as we celebrate everyday while travelling. And will celebrate the memories of movies during the little ‘relaxation’ timings at workplace.

At the end of every year, I wish that the last one week or few days should be celebrated with a ‘party’ song and with a song of ‘ a new year’.

Today’s song is a party song and from the video of this song we can see that it is happening at party for a ‘new year’…

So here is this well-known song not posted on the blog so far…

This song is from the movie ‘Dil Se Mile Dil-1978’.

“Dil Se Mile Dil-1978” was directed by Bhishm Kohli for ‘Kailashpati Pictures, Bombay’. It had Bhishm Kohli, Shyamli, Om Shivpuri, Leela Mishra, Abhi Bhattacharya, Gautam Sarin, Jayshree T., Madhup Sharma, Bharat Kapoor, Julie, Shankar Bhake, Vimal Chopra, Shriram Shastri, Gurbachan, Adolf Fernandes, Vijay Bali, Mahendra Tyagi, Salim Khan, and others.

Mehmood, Shakti Kapoor and Lalita Pawar had guest appearances in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 28.08.1978.

This movie has five songs (including one two-part song) written by Amit Khanna.
Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri.

Here is the list of songs of this movie :-

SNo Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 He… haathon mein mere bhi mehndi lagaao Sulakshana Pandit, Vijayeta Pandit
02 Dil se miley dil … (in two parts) Kishore Kumar (chorus)
03 Ye nainaa ye kaajal Kishore Kumar 13 October 2014
04 Ae… chhodo bhi ye nakhhara karo pyaar ham se Lata Mangeshkar
05 Aabraa kadaabra hinchi…aflaatoon Bappi Lahiri, chorus

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar, and I remember this song was frequently heard in those years. This song was on ‘paaydaan’ number twenty-six in the list of ‘annual Binaca Geetmala of 1978’ among the top ‘34’ songs of that year.
However, I didn’t like this song during its time that came during my growing years, and I found it irritating whenever it played on the radio.
I had never listened to it attentively unlike now while preparing for this post. On the other hand, I like the other Kishore Kumar song from this movie which is ‘ye nainaa ye kaajal’. I had shared it on the blog when I become associated with this blog. The first time I fell in love with this song was in ‘1987’ when HMV had released a ‘four-cassette’ album as ‘ a tribute to the legend – Kishore Kumar’ after he had passed away.

I think this movie was screened at our colony during the weekly screening of movie. But I do not remember anything about this movie and its details.

Today’s song is lip-synced on screen by Bhishm Kohli who used to act like ‘Dev Anand’ and I guess it is actress Shyamli sitting there as we see in the picturisation of the song. The picturisation also shows some regular faces of Hindi movies (whom I am unable to identify by names).

As mentioned above today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and lyrics are written by Amit Khanna.
Bappi Lahiri is the composer of this today’s song.

Let us listen to this wonderful song now and enjoy music …

Rajesh Khanna’s birth anniversary – A tribute

Today 29th December’2022 is the eightieth birth anniversary (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) of Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna. Had he been alive, he would have turned eighty today.

On this occasion for today I could not complete my earlier planned post for this day under my series ‘ Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon’. However, since I do not want to miss to contribute for today’s occasion, I am presenting a song from a Rajesh Khanna movie so as to pay our tributes to Rajesh Khanna today.

I will also not repeat what I have earlier written about Kaka and his movies on the blog.

When I was looking for a song for today, I first thought that I will present a song with Pancham-Kaka-Majrooh combination. Later, I check for a Pancham-Kaka-Anand Bakshi combination and lastly, I thought I would present a song from a recent movie (i.e., from the eighties) of Rajesh Khanna. Finally, I decided that I will select a movie from the year ‘1985’ only, a year in which maximum movies of Rajesh Khanna were released.

And when I check the songs of this movie ‘Insaaf Main Karoonga-1985’ and went through its’ songs I found a song sung by Bappi Lahiri for Kaka. In this movie he has given his voice for two songs to Kaka. How did I forget all this? Even I do not remember if I had watched this movie then?

But one thing I remember that this movie was not a successful movie then, though ‘Wikipedia’ mentions it ‘a golden jubilee hit movie’ (?) now.

“Insaaf Main Karoongaa-1985” was directed by Shibu Mitra for ‘Seth Films International’.
It was produced by B.S. Sethi.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.05.1985.

The star cast of ‘Insaaf Main Karoongaa’ included Rajesh Khanna, Tina Munim, Padmini Kolhapure, Shakti Kapoor, Om Shivpuri, Joy Mukherjee, Tez Sapru, Leena Das, Aruna Irani, Chandrashekhar, Uttam Sodhi, Bob Christo and others.

This movie had six songs written by Verma Malik and Anjaan three songs each.

Here is the list of songs contained in this movie:-.

SNo. Song Title Lyricist Singer/s
01 Ye kya huaa….aap ki nazron se dil pe goli chalne lagi (part 1) Anjaan Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle
02 Ho ho ho… dum taana dum taana bole rabaab Verma Malik Shabbir Kumar, Manhar, Chandrani Mukherjee
03 Ek baras mein ek baar hi aati hai ye raat yaaron Verma Malik Bappi Lahiri
04 Salma o Salma main hoon Salma Verma Malik Sharon Prabhakar
05 Honey… kuchh maangu to dena Anjaan Asha Bhonsle, Bappi Lahiri
06 Ye kya huaa….aap ki nazron se dil pe goli chalne lagi (part 2) Anjaan Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle

Today’s song is sung by Bappi Lahiri as mentioned above. Lyrics are by Verma Malik, and music is composed by Bappi Lahiri himself.
(Readers will also note something special each time Bappi Da sings ‘ek’ in his style 😊 ).

On screen it is Rajesh Khanna performing on the song in his inimitable style. Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Tina Munim, Om Shivpuri (whose intentions does not look good 😊 ) Tez Sapru and many others.

This song is nice party song and I guess it is a ‘new year celebration party’ in the movie.

Anyway, we do also have a reason to celebrate- for Rajesh Khanna today – for his style and charisma and the memories of his movies with us. Secondly, we have only three days of ‘2022’ now, so let us cheer and celebrate 😊

Listening to this song may remind of some other song of same tune but I am not able to put a finger to the original song.

With this song this movie “Insaaf Main Karoongaa-1985” makes its debut on the blog.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Lyricist/MD Ravindra Jain-Zid 1976)
—————————————

These days I am looking for missing movies of Lyricist Ravindra Jain (of course he is the music director as well), from the seventies, for some obvious reasons.

Recently I came across one such movie which I am not much aware of and I think I never got to listen to its songs. But, after listening to its songs I find the ‘holi’ song a familiar one and I was also surprised that it has not been posted on the blog so far. (however I guess it must have been sent by our other team members?)

This movie is ‘Zid’ from the year ‘1976’.

“Zid-1976” was directed by Vijay for ‘Prestige Films, Bombay’. It had Sachin, Sarika, Nutan, Om Shivpuri, Rajendra Nath, A.K. Hangal, Anwar Hussain, Madhu Malini, Kiran Seth, Yunus Parvez, Maruti, Urmila Bhatt, Tun Tun, Shivraj, Alankar, Sarita Devi, Raju, Ghosh, Miki, T.P. Jain, Prem Nath, Titoo, Sumit and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 21.08.1976.

This movie has five songs written by Ravindra Jain who was also the composer for this movie.

Here is the list of songs this movie has.

Sr.no. Song Title Singer/s
01 Ho ho…is mitti ke kan kan ka hai upkaar Mahendra Kapoor, chorus
02 Aa … tere liye maine thaami re maala Asha Bhonsle, Jaspal Singh
03 Holi hai, ho ho … rang le ke deewaane aa gaye Asha Bhonsle, Jaspal Singh, chorus
04 Teri palkon ke taley ye jo deepak hain jaley Jaspal Singh
05 Ho, jab talak dam mein dam, tam lagaate raho Asha Bhonsle, chorus

Today I am presenting a song sung by Jaspal Singh from this movie. Regulars on the blog are well aware that I am big fan of Jaspal Singh. His songs from the ‘seventies’ are part of our beautiful memories and nostalgia associated with my growing years (1968-1983).

Lyrics for today’s song are by Ravindra Jain and music is composed by him too.

Today’s song is a birthday song which on screen actor Sachin is singing for Sarika. Also seen in the picturisation of this song are Prem Nath, Nutan, Master Raju and many others.
This song has beautiful lyrics and lovely singing by Jaspal Singh. It has some ‘grey’ shades too and that is something to do with the story of this movie which I am not aware of.
I do not remember to have read about this movie or any discussion about this movie among our friend circle. I think this movie was not a successful one and may have been forgotten easily.

Ravindra Jain’s compositions from the movies ‘Geet Gaata Chal-1975’, ‘Chitchor-1976’, ‘Fakira-1976’, and etc? ( 🙂 ) did feature in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of the year ‘1976’ and he ruled the ‘hearts’ of music lovers then.

Let us listen to today’s song now.

With this song the movie ‘Zid-1976’ makes its debut on the blog.

We already have movies with the same title made in ‘1945’ – ‘Zidd’ and in ‘1994’ – ‘Zid’ on the blog. Today’s movie ‘Zid-1976’ made in between these years joins these ‘Zid’ now 🙂

chadhhti umar par gaa gaa ke

yoonhi khilti rahe sadaa
hai hamaari yahi duaa
teri palkon ke taley

yoonhi jaltey rahen sadaa
hai hamaari yahi duaa aa
teri palkon ke taley
o o o o
ye jo deepak hain jaley
ho o o o
yoonhi jaltey rahen sadaa
hai hamaari yahi duaa aa

Hullo Atuldom

‘Indian Idol’ a program that is aired on a satellite television channel has episodes that have contestants sing songs that are topical or paying tribute to legends of yesteryears. So we have had episodes dedicated to Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Tanuja, Sharmila Tagore etc. I was super disappointed to have missed a few episodes- ones that celebrated Kishore Kumar, 75 years of Rajshri Productions etc. Thanks to Apps of the various channels we are able to see these episodes at will and the one episode I regretted missing is the one that was telecast on 5th November. It was a supremely surprising episode that featured Meenakshi Seshadri.

Yes, Meenakshi Seshadri is in the country currently and this must have been her first public appearance. She spoke of her life post marriage and how she didn’t regret giving up acting & the fame/grind associated with life in front of the camera. She spoke of how she is learning to cook and that itself was so cutely said that she came across as being totally humble. She still has looks that will make people fall in love with her all over again, after all these years.
Today she is turning a year older and let us wish her All the Best for her future endeavours. She is still continuing her dance and recitals, maybe that is the secret of her looking the way she currently does.

The song with this post is from “Shahanshah” (1988) which had music by Amar-Utpal & lyrics by Anand Bakshi. The song is in the voice of Asha Bhosle. It shows Meenakshi Seshadri performing in a dance form that is completely different from her forte’. She looks comfortable even in an ‘Item Number’.
In the run up to this post I revisited the only song posted, from “Shahanhshah” and discovered a vital piece of information in that post. Don’t know how I missed what is mentioned there- Amar-Utpal are the sons of the legendary Anil Biswas.

Happy Birthday Shashikala Seshadri popular as Meenakshi Seshadri.

Song-Gardish mein jab jaam aayenge (Shahanshah)(1988) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Amar Utpal

Lyrics

hey you

hey you
aankhen na chura
khud ko mujhse na chhupa
zara mudke dekh

hey you
badan jal raha hai
paas aa
zara chhoo ke dekh

hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge
mushkil mein ham kaam aayenge
nazdeek aa aa aa aa
ae ajnabi
kar len zara si ham dosti
hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge
mushkil mein ham kaam aayenge
nazdeek aa aa aa aa
ae ajnabi
kar len zara si ham dosti ee
hey you

dhinak dhin dha
dhinak dhin dha
dhinak dhin dha

masti ne li hai angdaaiyaan
dans lengi humko tanhaaiyaan
mahfil mein hongi ruswaaiyaan
donon ke sar pe ilzaam aayenge
hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge
mushkil mein ham kaam aayenge
nazdeek aa aa aa aa
ae ajnabi
kar len zara si ham dosti ee
hey you
lalalalaa
lalalalaa
lalalalaa
lalaaalalaa

ho o
ho o
ho o
o o

aankhon ki bhi jubaan hai
ye duniya jis’se anjaan hai
kya tumko iski pehchaan hai
aankhon aankhon mein paigaam aayenge
hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge
mushkil mein ham kaam aayenge
nazdeek aa aa aa aa
ae ajnabi
kar len zara si ham dosti ee
hey you

phir kab jaane apni mulaakaat ho
mehfil ki aakhiri ye raat ho
khul kar lekin kaise baat ho
hahaha
baaton baaton mein kayi naam aayenge
hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge
mushkil mein ham kaam aayenge
nazdeek aa aa aa aa
ae ajnabi
kar len zara si ham dosti ee
hey you
gardish mein jab jaam aayenge

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————–—-
#Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (many moods of Kishore Kumar)
—————————————–

Today’s song is another Kishore Kumar song which I came across recently, on 7th of October 2022 to be exact, when I listened to it on radio (Vividh Bharati). That day was the birthday of Music Director Usha Khanna (born on 07.10.1941).
(She turned eighty-one this 7th October 2022 ).

I was not remembering that either, but I immediately realized it from the other songs (composed by Usha Khanna) played during this program that I was familiar with.

I was not familiar with today’s song. Though, I vaguely remembered that I might have heard it earlier. The whole composition is very nice, and it immediately captivated me as the voice of Kishore Kumar had that special touch he had in his song of seventies. but the song turned out to be from the eighties which I came to know later when I checked for its details.

This song is from the movie ‘Preeti 1986’.

‘Preeti-1986’ was directed by Saawan Kumar for ‘Dunhill Productions, Bombay’. It was produced by Anil Agarwal. It had Rajeev Kapoor, Padmini Kolhapure, Asha Parekh, Shashikala, Prem Chopra, Shastri, Jamboora, Ramesh Oswal, Baby Sucheta and others.

Story of this movie was written by Saawan Kumar. Screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Kamleshwar.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.03.1986.

This movie had eight soundtracks released including one music track and seven songs.

Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Manmohan Singh, Usha Khanna, Rajeev Kapoor had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today we are going to listen to this melodious song from this movie composed by Usha Khanna. (Other songs from this movie are also interesting and one of them is going to follow soon on the blog 🙂 ).

Lyrics for today’s song are by Saawan Kumar.

Music is composed by Usha Khanna, arguably one of the most successful of few female music directors’ that Hindi film industry has. The other two being Jaddan Bai, and Saraswati Devi.

Usha Khanna has been the most successful of the female music directors and she has given us many unforgettable songs to enjoy with. I am a big fan of her music and many of her compositions are in my list of most favourites of HFM.

Let us now enjoy today’s wonderful song …

With today’s song this movie ‘Preeti-1986’ makes its debut on the blog today …

Recently I am coming across many Kishore Kumar songs which he sung, and which are from the movies of eighties. I am trying to bring such songs here for the listening pleasure of our readers and reviving the memory of such songs and movies here.

Sometimes I feel that I may have missed listening to the many good songs of Kishore Kumar sun in the 1980s( except the songs he sang for Rajesh Khanna during that period).

Over to today’s song now …

Song-Kuchh log anjaane bhi kyun apnon se lagte hain (Preeti)(1986) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Sawan Kumar Tak, MD-Usha Khanna

jaagi aankhon ne dekhe hain
un sapnon se ae lagte hain

koi phool khilaa hai
madhuban mein ae ae ae
ya unka phool sa chehra hai
jeewan ka jo singaar bane
wo unn gehnon se lagte hain ae
kuchh log anjaane bhi
kyun apnon se lagte hain
jaagi aankhon ne dekhen hain
kuchh log anjaane bhi ee

Nowadays it is happening with me regularly that whenever I come across a new song (newer to me) I check for its movie name, and when I became aware of the name of the movie I check it on the blog. I am under the impression that this movie surely is on the blog. But, when I found that the movie is not yet available on the blog, I do not believe it and keep checking many times in various lists  . The recent such instances is the movie ‘Taxi Chor-1980’ and another one is the today’s movie.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Daasi-1981’. I do not know if I was confusing the movie ‘Swaami-1977’ with ‘Daasi’, but I was surprised to note that ‘Daasi-1981’ is yet to make its debut on the blog.

I landed on this movie ‘Daasi-1981’ when I get to listen one of its songs, not the today’s one, on Vividh Bharati. I was planning to present that song which I listened to and liked, but I am leaving that one for another write-up soon.

This is because this movie ‘Daasi-1981’ has Sanjeev Kumar in it and today 6th November 2022 is the thirty-seventh ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ of Sanjeev Kumar.

Sanjeev Kumar (Haribhai Jethalal Jariwala) was born on 9th July 1938 and passed away on 6th November 1985 at the age of forty-seven only. One of the finest actors of Hindi Cinema Sanjeev Kumar was the most loved actor by of all our group of friends who grew up in the seventies.

We enjoyed his movies a lot and whenever there was a new Sanjeev Kumar movie released every one of us (friends) were eager to watch it as early as possible and then we used to discuss it a lot in our friends’ group meetings.

But I do not remember to have watched the today’s movie of Sanjeev Kumar which was released in 1981. I was studying in ninth standard then (in 1981-1982). It seems that the movie was also a lesser known or a non-successful movie of its time.

‘Daasi-1981’ was directed by Raj Khosla for ‘Gavrav International Productions, Bombay’.
It was produced by Subhash Verma.

It had Sanjeev Kumar, Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rakesh Roshan, Vikram, Paintal, Siddharth Kak, Radhika Bartakke, Anita Advani, Sundar, Leela Mishra, Dhoomal, Bela, Meena, Rajesh, Arjan Sahni, Gauri Verma, Pooja Verma and others.

This movie had seven songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Ravindra Jain and Rajesh Roshan.

I will be presenting more details of this movie and its songs in my next write-up with a song of this movie.

Today as a tribute to Sanjeev Kumar we will listen to a song from this movie which is sung by Bhupinder Singh and which on screen is performed by Sanjeev Kumar.

Also seen in the picturisation of this song is Rekha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Vikram and others.

In the today’s song the character in the movie ‘under the circumstances’ is trying to justify his drinking … ‘thhodi sharaab pee loon’. So, I don’t think this song should fall under ‘drunkard’ song. But, incidentally recently I listened to ‘Madhushaala’ after a long time and also some ‘drinking motivational songs’ from Hindi movies. Actually, since many years I am longing to do a ‘compilation’ of all ‘these type of songs from Hindi movies’ 🙂
The today’s song reminded me of the following lines from ‘madhushaala’ …

‘dard nashaa hai is madira ka, vigat smritiyaan saathi hain, peeda mein anand jise ho aaye meri madhushaala’ 🙂 (well sometimes it happens … )

Let us listen to today’s song now and watch Sanjeev Kumar performing as a ‘ghazal singer’ …

Song-Thhodi sharaab pee loon(Daasi)(1981) Singer-Bhupinder Singh, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

Log kehte hain main
ek fankaar hoon
apni shohrat se par
main sharamsaar hoon
mujhse poochho agar
to main kuchh bhi nahin
girti tooti huyi
ek deewaar hoon

thhodi sharaab pee loon
thhodi sharaab pee loon
ho jaaye kuchh sahaara aa aa
ae doston tumhen kya
ae doston tumhe kya
ye bhi …
nahin gawaaraa
thhodi sharaab pee loon

sur taal bol bhooley
main meet yaad aaye
do ghoont pee liye to
sau geet yaad aaye
sau geet yaad aaye
geeton mein yaad bhar doon
geeton mein yaad bhar doon
dil ka main dard saaraa aa
ae doston tumhe kya
ae doston tumhe kya
ye bhi …
nahin gawaaraa
thhodi sharaab pee loon

(Dialogues not included)

bhoole huye dinon ki
yaadein jagaa rahi hain
shaayad kahin se koi
aawaaz aa rahi hai
aawaaz aa rahi hai
mud kar to dekh loon main
mud kar to dekh loon main
kisne mujhe pukaaraa aa
ae doston tumhe kya aa
ae doston tumhe kya
ye bhi …
nahin gawaaraa
thhodi sharaab pee loon

raste mein thhak gaya hoon
manzil se door hoon main
saahil hai door mujhse
saahil se door hoon main
saahil se door hoon main
toofaan ko banaa loon
toofaan ko banaa loon
main doob kar kinaaraa aa
ae doston tumhen kya aa
ae doston tumhe kya
ye bhi …
nahin gawaaraa
thhodi sharaab pee loon
ho jaaye kuchh sahaara aa
ae doston tumhen kya
ye bhi …
nahin gawaaraa
thhodi sharaab pee loon

Music is an irresistible thing. It energizes the soul and is a great stress buster. Indian film music especially is very enchanting and melodious to listen.

Years back, during the age of black and white movies, there was not much variety in music. If you listen to old Hindi songs, you will find almost the same beats. The music was simple, yet it was very melodious. Singers like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh, Lata and Asha were simply outstanding and still their magic is alive.

Although the times have changed and so is the pattern of music. There are varieties of music such as pop, rock, jazz and many more. But still if you compare a new old Hindi song (from 70s and 80s) with any of the latest ones, you will of course find a huge difference. New Old Hindi songs, though outdated, are still most demanded by the people.

The greatest appeal of the 70s is that it combines the simple and casual comfort of pop culture with the elaborate razzmatazz of disco combined with the introduction of electronic instruments and melodious compositions.

The new old retro music of 70s and 80s has done wonders in the Hindi film Industry in those times. These ‘New Old Hindi film songs’ are still favorites and not just among people of old age but also among youngsters. This is because of the fact that New Old Hindi songs used to have more voice transitions and high and low notes which makes their performance more appealing to the listeners. The New Old Hindi songs are always in, unaffected by latest ones.

Now what draws us to the swinging 70s is its rare combination of simple retro chick and disco dazzle. The decade in which women asserted their individuality through carefree dressing. An era when macho men wore florid shirts with broad collars. A time frame that broke out of the formal dress code to celebrate casual style and then climaxed the ‘me-decade’ as it was the beginning of ‘anything goes’ culture and a form of self-expression.

It was a period of ‘paradigm shift’ as far as the Bollywood heroine is concerned. Gone was the demure, submissive leading lady of the 60s and in stepped the empowered, modern heroine of the 70s.

Early 70s heralded with Mumtaz popularizing diaphanous fabrics and layered saris. Sharmila Tagore’s elaborate bouffant, arched eyebrows and Cleopatra-like winged eyeliner became her signature style. The mid-70s witnessed the simple and conservative chick of Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri.

The late 70s showcased the emancipated, modern woman whose clothes and accessories reflected her Westernized persona. The pleasantly plump form of a heroine morphed into the slim and lanky hippie look. Svelte Parveen Babi popularized the dancer’s leotard and body suit. ‘Bobby’ launched sweet 16, Dimple Kapadia dressed in true American High School style togged in miniskirts, bikini, hot pants and crop tops.

As for the Bollywood heroes of 70s , mixed era of romances and action flicks – saw a lot of variety from silk-lungi -kurtas and Guru Shirts favored by Rajesh Khanna and hardy denim jackets and bell bottom jeans ported by Amitabh and Dharmendra.

The first half of 70s was ruled by Rajesh Khanna and the latter half by Amitabh Bachchan, romances and then violent vendetta films.

And last but not the least, the 70s gave us excellent and retro songs and mega hits like ‘Sholay’, ‘Bobby’, ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’, ‘Deewaar’ etc.

Here I leave you with my above thoughts to take you to today’s entertaining song. The song is sung mainly by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle but voices of RD Burman and Bhupinder Singh also figure in chorus. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and music is trademark RD Burman.

The song is picturised as a party dance song on Shashi Kapoor, Leena Das, Sarita, Sujata and many others.

Lyrics of the song were sent by Prakashchandra.
