#the Decade of Seventies – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————

Today 20th April 2023 is the fifty third ‘remembrance anniversary’ of the legendary lyricist Shakeel Badayuni.

He was born on 3rd August 1916 and he passed away on 20th April 1970.

As a tribute to him, today I am presenting a song penned by him from an ‘un-released’ movie ‘Jitni Door Utne Paas-1960’.

Today’s song is from a stunt film Gogola-1966.

The date was 28-8-2017. I received an EMail from an unknown person, as follows….

Kelly Robinson

Hi—

I’ve been told that you are an expert in Hindi cinema. I’m writing a book on lost horror films, and one of my chapters is on the film Gogola, which seems to be lost.

It is very difficult to find information on this film in English, so I was hoping you might be able to tell me about it. Any information at all is helpful. I’m also curious to know if it was the first Hindi film with a giant monster. Do you know if there were other similar films that preceded it?

Thank you very much for your help. I will be certain to credit you in the book with any information you can provide.

Kelly Robinson

I was surprised. First of all, I tried to find out who this person was. From the internet I learnt that Kelly Robinson was an Award winning film writer and researcher from the USA. He was associated with various Magazines as author, Radio, TV and Hollywood etc.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 27
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Haan ji, yes. Reuse of songs in Hindi films goes back a long way. I had no inkling of this particular episode that goes back all the way to 1944. A very dear friend, Anoop ji Gadodia, pointed it out to me recently.

We have earlier presented songs of 30s, which have been used in later films. Examples are “Ik Bangla Bane Nyaara” – a song from the 1937 film ‘President’, which was later used in the film ‘Do Raaste’ of 1969. Then we have another song for the same year – “Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye” from the film ‘Street Singer’, which has been reused in the 1973 film ‘Aavishkaar’. The thing to note is that both these reuse events occurred decades after the original song was released.

Today’s song is again by a comedian, from a stunt film of the First decade of the Talkie era. It is from the film Gareeb ka Laal-1939.

For our old and regular readers, perhaps the title of this film may sound familiar. The first song from this film was the 500th song of our friend Sudhir ji and it was posted by him on 28-2-2013. It was a funny, special song , having 32 names of actors and actresses of those times, in its lyrics. (Tujhe Bibbo kahoon ke Salochana (Gharib Ka Lal) ).

Today’s song is from an early film of Geeta Roy, from a stunt film- Jeene Do-1948.

If the 50’s decade was that of Religious films, the 40’s decade was dominated by Action, Stunt and Costume films. As many as 28 such films were made in 1948 alone, which gives an average of more than 2 films every month, which is quite high. The reasons were many for such films being made in abundance. The audience for stunt/action films generally belonged to the lower middle class, poor, daily wage earners and labourers. They looked for fights, stunts, dances and cheap humour in these films.

Composer – Meena Mangeshkar

In this post we get introduced to a movie from the ‘seventies’ where the music for the movie was composed by none other than Meena Mangeshkar.
I guess that this is the only Hindi movie where Meena Mangeshkar has composed the music.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #
————————————————————————

On our blog we have over five thousand four hundred songs from the decade of 1950s viz from the years of 1951-1960.
In comparison to that the decade of the 1960s or the years 1961-1970 have over four thousand songs. No doubt the golden years of Hindi cinema of the ‘fifties’ had produced many melodious and immortal songs. For me the years of 1961-1970 as well were the years of the glorious music period of the Hindi Film Industry. The great composers from the industry carried forward the legacy from the earlier years and continued to produce melodious music even in the subsequent years.

Today we will be listening to one such melodious song from the year ‘1963’. This composition will remind readers of another song from the same composer but with a different lyrics writer.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Been Ka Jaadoo-1963’.

Today’s song is a comedy song from the film Gazal-1945. It is ‘ sung ‘ by comedian N.M.Charlie.

Though the playback system started in India in 1935, it had not become popular immediately for various reasons. Most important reason was, due to the poor quality of stage type songs in films, not many records were made and sold. Additionally, there was an acute shortage of playback singers for the films. Slowly, over a period, the picture changed and by 1940, the playback system was firmly entrenched in films. This not only increased the number of songs recorded and the subsequent increase in their sales, but also newer playback singers were discovered and encouraged to sing for films.
