Hullo to all the guys and gals of Atuldom

The writing bug has hit me after a long time.

Had an enjoyable January. To begin with had a quiet ushering in of the New Year followed by birthday time. So each had a small outing attached to it.

Then the most eventful Sunday….17th January 2016. A day which was under planning since October 2015 when we had a mail from Guruji of his impending visit to Bangalore via Hosur and Hyderabad. This time the group met at a new venue— Residence of Gajendra Khanna. Now here I feel like mentioning that I am floored by his collection of Vinyl Records and the number of WORKING TURNTABLES or Record Players as I used to call them as a kid. Another thing that should be mentioned is his wonderful idea of how to get more people to enjoy an event and the thought behind getting us live on YOUTUBE that day. We went live that day at about 11. And instantly Avinashji, Ben Katie, Atulji YYIIPPEEEE master and a few of Gajendra’s friends (I don’t know exactly how many or who all) hooked on to us. The (physical) attendees were Shenoyji, Arunji (Guruji), Rajaji, Gajendraji and a group of music lovers whom I got acquainted with for the first time that day.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 14

KAADAMBARI (1944) was produced under the banner of Laxmi Productions and was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The star cast included Shanta Apte, Vanmala, Pahadi Sanyal, Harish, Jeevan etc. There were 15 songs in the film, all penned by Miss Kamal B.A, a pseudonym which Kavi Pradeep used for this film, probably due to his contract with Bombay Talkies. The songs were set to music by Hari Prasanna Das.

‘ख’
“खुली वादियों का सफर है”

Yesterday, 24th February, a living legend of Indian cinema turned 88.  From his pen have come such haunting songs as “Kho Diye, Hain Sanam, Teri Talaash Mein, Pichhle Kai Janam” (‘Teri Talaash Mein’, 1968), “Kai Sadiyon Se, Kai Janmon Se” (‘Milaap’, 1972), and such songs of love as “Main To Har Mod Par Us Ko Doonga Sadaa” (‘Chetna’, 1970), “Phir Milengi Kahaan, Aisi Tanhaaiyaan”, (‘Bhaavna’, 1972), “Har Janam Mein Hamaara Milan” (‘Kaagaz Ki Naao’, 1975), and “Tumhe Ho Na Ho, Mujhko To, Itna Yakeen Hai” (‘Gharonda’, 1977). Starting his film career with the film ‘Jaggu’ in 1952, this poet of the off beat continues to be active on both the big and small screens.

Wishing a very happy birth anniversary to Naqsh Lyallpuri, and also wishing him many more healthy and poetical years still to come.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 13

Naqsh-e-khayaal dil se mitaaya nahin hanooz
Bedard maine tujh ko bhulaaya nahin hanooz

——Josh Malihabadi

Dil se tera khayaal na jaaye to kya karoon
Main kya karoon koi na bataaye to kya karoon

—–Hafeez Jalandhari

Both these ghazals have been written in the same metre expressing almost the same sentiments. I have no idea as to which one of them was written first. But these ghazals have become a source of inspiration for writing lyrics for songs in Hindi films for situations like ‘broken heart’, separation from the beloved etc.

‘क’
“कल मेरी तरह मुझको सलाम आप करेंगे”

We now move to the consonants, having completed the list of basic vowels. So far, the only alphabet missing is the letter ‘ ई’.

This here is a wonderful nazm from the 1973 film ‘Mere Ghareeb Nnawaaz’. A very soft expression of first love, which has been sung so softly by Rafi Sb.  I remember this nazm was quite popular in its time and was frequently heard on the radio waves.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 12
———————————————————

Readers of this Blog may recall Talat Mehmood’s iconic song aa teri tasweer banaa loon from ‘Naadaan’ (1951) which was composed by Chic Chocolate (Antonio X. Vaz). Recently, I came across the mp3 clip of a song with the same starting verse from an obscure film ‘Rekha’ (1943). There is no mention of the names of singers and lyricist of the song. I got some information from the internet about the film but drew a blank on the names of singers. I could not locate the song on YT.

Missing Films of 1960s – 17

At the mention of the name ‘Pyaar Ki Jeet’, the mind automatically goes back to the 1948 film, with some wondrous songs like “Ik Dil Ke Tukde Hazaar Huye” sung by Rafi Sb, “Tere Nainon Ne Chori Kiya” sung by Suraiya, and “Itne Door Hain Huzoor Kaise Mulakat Ho” in the voice of Surinder Kaur. The iconic songs of that film were composed by Husnlal Bhagatram.

‘औ’
“औरत के दिल पे क्या गुजरे, इंसान भला क्या जाने”

History, they say, is like the view that a traveler takes, when he decides to pause and rest, and then take a look back over the path that he has come. In literal terms, that path, and hence the view, stretches back for miles and miles. Having reached where he is, all he can see now is what is visible from a distance – the high mountains, or tall trees, or big pockets of habitation, or the large rivers, and other prominent landmarks that can still be seen from the vantage point where he now stands. What is not visible are the individual people he may have met and interacted on the way, the small roadside tea shops where he may have rested and had a snack, or the homes of friends, or even a tree, where he may have spent a peaceful night. There may be memories in the mind, but those are not now visible to the eyes. And a plethora of other small landmarks and events and experiences, that are no longer very sharp in the memory.
