The early phase of Talkie films was full of 2 types of people.
1. Those who wanted to do something worthwhile in this new field, and
2. Those who saw this field as an opportunity to showcase their skills.

This is a song sung by Asha Bhosle-for I.S.Johar ! Yes,don’t get surprised. She has given playback to a Male-in woman’s clothes. This is not the first time she has done it. Earlier too she sang for Kishore kumar in film ‘ Baap re Baap ‘-1955.

” Loss of one person is the gain of another” I am reminded of this famous quotation, whenever I think of Partition and the subsequent exchange of Film artistes between India and the newly born nation of Pakistan. While many talented and well established composers, singers and Directors migrated to Pakistan, many producers and experienced film makers returned to India. Thus while the new born Pakistan got a solid help to build their own separate film industry-with ready made artistes from India, the Indian film industry was further strengthened with the arrival of film makers like the Sippys, Chopras, the Shoreys and the Pancholis from Lahore.

MAYANAGARI film world can be quite generous to some and extremely harsh to others. Generous to the extent that there are fabulous rewards in it for those who get the right breaks, while it can be quite mean for the people behind the scenes, who help others to succeed.

GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…..song no.10…LAST SONG OF THE SERIES.
——————————————————————-
After Partition in 1947, it did not take long for things to become normal in the Indian film industry. This was mainly because ready replacements were available in plenty to fill the vacancies caused by migration. As far as producers and financers were concerned, almost all producers and film makers had arrived here from Lahore. It was actually Lahore which felt the absence of Film makers. Pakistan film Industry was somehow managed well by the experienced people who went from India and Pakistan enjoyed a ” GOLDEN AGE OF FILMS AND MUSIC ” from 1959 to 1977. Once the old generation retired, there was no second line to take over from them.

GEMS FROM THE MIGRATORS…..song no. 9
———————————————-
When we talk of Partition and Migration of artistes from one country to another, only the famous and the well known names are taken. There were hundreds of small time actors, directors, lyricists, composers, instrument players, chorus singers, technicians etc who were not known to many and also had migrated for various reasons. The other day I was reading a book, ” Who’s who: Music in Pakistan ” written by A.Shaikh and M.Shaikh. In this book I found several names of singers, composers, lyricists and above all instrument players, who shifted to Pakistan.

Very enthusiastically and patting myself for this original idea, I started the work and then I realised that this was a mammoth project requiring lot of time and patience !
