The Voice of Mukesh #72

I am sure the regulars will remember. Reviving this series after a gap of almost seven years. When I paused working on this series, I had already posted 71 of some of the most rare, less heard and not easily available songs of Mukesh. The songs posted were mainly from the decades of 1940s and 1950s. Although I had clicked on the pause button back in 2016, the work to bring on board more of Mukesh songs did continue. And it still does, with the tireless research effort of our resident Mukesh expert and mureed (मुरीद), dear Mahesh ji.

Of course yes. A repeat song again. And what a wonderful song at that.
The original song from the film ‘Hum Dono’ has become such an iconic fixture in the nostalgia, one of those peerless creations that may not be duplicated , maybe ever. It was the first and the only stint of music director Jaidev with Dev Sb’s Navketan banner. This singular partnership, with Sahir Sb writing the lyrics has given a bouquet of long and deep memories to generations of listeners.

Raj Kapoor – the eternal seeker, the eternal explorer – in quest for the meaning of love equation between a man and a woman. All his life he produced films. It really has been a while– I do not follow the current Hindi films scene on a regular basis. I think this started in mid 1980s. One factor was that my life became quite mobile as far as my work situation was concerned. Moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1987, then on to US in 1988, back in Delhi 1996, change of workplace two times, and then back again in the US in 2000. Back in Delhi 2009/10, and then more ongoing travel albeit shorter and less frequent.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 27

Haan ji, yes. Reuse of songs in Hindi films goes back a long way. I had no inkling of this particular episode that goes back all the way to 1944. A very dear friend, Anoop ji Gadodia, pointed it out to me recently.
We have earlier presented songs of 30s, which have been used in later films. Examples are “Ik Bangla Bane Nyaara” – a song from the 1937 film ‘President’, which was later used in the film ‘Do Raaste’ of 1969. Then we have another song for the same year – “Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Hi Jaaye” from the film ‘Street Singer’, which has been reused in the 1973 film ‘Aavishkaar’. The thing to note is that both these reuse events occurred decades after the original song was released.

What is going on today? I am sure this question is worrying the minds of quite a few if not many or all regulars of this blog. Atul ji seems to be in a big hurry today. Seven posts already since his first good morning call at 5 am. Aha, so getting to the century number it seems. Yeah, ok, that’s it, he wants to complete the century, and make the century post today. But why? What is the tearing need? Is there a birthday not known to anybody? Is it a special day for someone on the bandwagon or in the industry? The anniversary page has no listing for today. ये क्या हो रहा है? क्या चल रहा है?

Uma Devi the singer – most people, especially of the more recent generations may not even recognize this name. And if they are film buffs, they may surely be familiar with the comedienne Tun Tun. However, they may not connect these two names to the same person.
Remembering Uma Devi on her remembrance day today. She left this world on 24th November in the year 2003, at the age of 80.
