I was very fond of seeing movies and listening to the songs since childhood. Those days, children were not allowed to see films, unlike today. If at all a film is to be seen, the children had to go with their mother, aunt, grandmother or some such female relative and the film would invariably be something like Ram Ravan Yudh or Bakasur ki Maut.

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 30

‘ल’ – लीजिये दिल का नज़राना, लीजिये आँख का शुक्राना ॰ ॰ ॰

आवाज़ दे कर हमें तुम बुलाओ ॰ ॰ ॰

Ah yes, that is what the heart desires, but sadly, that will happen no more. . . you are so far away now, that our supplications so sent, do not reach you any more.

OK, wow, another gem from the radio listening days. And what a wonderful reminder this song is. The film is ‘Naya Kanoon’ from 1965, and Rafi Sb is accompanied by Asha Bhosle in this song. Given that Madan Mohan is the music director, I am a little surprised that Lata does not figure in this film at all. Eight songs in all, with four female solos, and one duet (this one) – all carry the voice of Asha Bhosle. Possibly this recording may have been done during the time when there was a stand off between Lata ji and Rafi Sb. Still surprising that Madan Mohan did not get Lata to sing even one of the solo songs. Or possibly, other reasons, circumstances may have intervened.

For me, this is a crush that still endures – a crush that I have never gotten over. Since the days when I first saw her in ‘Talash’ (1969) – and the song – “Kar Le Pyaar Karne Ke Din Hain Yahi” – a part of me has always remained smitten with her image and her thoughts. Helen, aah Helen – the ultimate danseuse of the silver screen. Helen – whose art has established the gold benchmark as a dancer, for all measures – from the past, and maybe, forever in the future. For sincerely, till this time, no other dancer has come close to this ultimate – in grace, in innovation, in energy, in movement – in every aspect of this art form.

‘Dhongee’ (censor certificate 23-12-1976), was a movie directed by Ashok Roy and produced by Kant Kumar productions. It seems to have had a delayed release (Wikipedia says it was released 4th May 1979). It has a starcast of Randhir Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Asrani, Sujit Kumar, Farida Jalal, Iftikhar, and Premnath. Rakesh Roshan had a friendly appearance. The lyricist to this movie was Anand Bakshi and music director was Rahul Dev Burman. The movie had five songs and Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Amit Kumar were the playback singers. One song of this film – “Haaye Re Haaye Tera Ghunghta” – has been posted earlier, as a contribution by Pamir Harvey where a brief outline of the movie is provided. This song is popular to this day. I remember that sometime in the late 90s or early 2000 there was a remix version to this song which triggered the memory of this song. As I sat to write this post I discovered that there has been another version of this song which has been used in a recent movie titled ‘Paisa Vasool’ (2004) – I don’t know anything about this recent movie.

Today’s song is a very melodious duet by Surendra and Waheedan Bai, in film Alibaba-1940.

Alibaba’s story is from Arabian Nights stories and is one of the most popular stories around the world. No wonder, our film makers took up this story. Films with ‘Alibaba’ title were made in 1940, 1946 and 1976. Films with ‘Alibaba and 40 Thieves’ title were made in 1932, 54, 66, 80 and 2004. ‘Alibaba and Marjina’ was made in 1977. There may be some more which I have missed. Comparatively, more films were made on Alladin and his Magic Lamp. After all magic has its own attraction. Even in silent era films were made on these two characters.

Your own words are so prophetic. The memories of your songs, when they descend upon the mind – it is a deluge that covers the mind.

Another day, another letter of the alphabet, and another fabulous duet – Rafi Sb and Asha Bhosle.

This song is from the 1960 film ‘Rangeela Raja’. This is a stunt film which was produced under the banner of Diamond Jubilee Films, and was produced and directed by Ismail. The cast of actors in this film is listed as Kumkum, Mahipal, Shashikala, Meenu Mumtaz, Bhagwan, Dhanraj, Jayant, Kammo, Uma Dutt, Chand Burque, Satish, Kesari, Zippy, and Pintu.

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
tera wajood hai sirf dastaan ke liye

palat ke su-e-chaman dekhne se kya hogaa
wo shaakh hi na rahi jo thhi aashiyaan ke liye

garaz paarast jahaan mein wafaa talaash na kar
ye shai bani hai kisi dusre jahan ke liye

Thus wrote Sahir Ludhianvi for the film ‘Daastaan’ (1972). Here he takes a cue from Allama Iqbal who said ….

na tu zameen ke liye hai na aasmaan ke liye
jahaan hai tere liye tu nahin jahaan ke liye

Ever the cynic….

Since the day making of talkie films started in India, till today, no one knows how many actors have worked in films. Few years back, one gentleman had made a list of 7000 actors up to year 2000 and it was posted on a site, which is now defunct. Ordinary film buffs do not know all the names. The experts, perhaps, may know more. Fact remains that there are only few actors known to all and few known to some.

Missing Films of 1960s – 84
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Another very obscure and unfamiliar film; and another wonderful set of songs that probably have not seen the light of the day. The experience keeps reiterating itself.

The film is ‘Takht Aur Talwar’ from 1970. And the song – an exuberant challenge, rendered by Suman Kalyanpur.  The production company is titled as Kanchanganga Films, Bombay. And practically no other information available, as far as the producer, director and the star cast is concerned.
