Saga Of Sleepless Nights -1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

oo oo. . neend na mujh ko aaye,
dil mera ghabraaye
chup ke chup ke, koyi aa ke,
soyaa pyaar jagaaye

There must have been an age, a time in life, a passage of emotional intensities, when you may have spend a few (or maybe many) sleepless nights – thinking, waiting, contemplating. Yes, they visit us all, the nights of the wide open eyes, when a cloudy sky is an irritating bore – for if the skies were clear, at least you would be able to start counting the stars.

Jaidev Ki Non-Filmi Suraavali – 02
—————————————————-

I missed the birth anniversary of my dear Jaidev ji (3rd Aug), by not presenting a tribute to him. I also regretfully observed that same day on our blog, under to flood of songs of ‘KK’ by his fans, NO Atulite remembered Jaidev ji.

Greetings to all on today’s festival of Rakshabandhan. I hope and pray that celebrations have been happily enjoyed in the household of all readers and friends.

As we have discussed in many posts earlier on this topic, Rakshabandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the month of Saawan. In traditional terms, the timing of today’s celebrations got restricted due to two additional astrological events that coincided with the full moon celebration. As per the calculations of the ephemeris applicable to the Indian subcontinent, the full moon ‘tithi’ i.e. the ‘poornima’ started at 10:29 pm yesterday (6th Aug), and will be in effect till 11:41 pm tonight (7th Aug).

Today’s song is from a film called ‘Shiv Kanya’ (1954). The title may surprise some readers. Did Bhagwan Shiv ji have a daughter? Some people may brush it off thinking that it is yet another fruit of the fertile imagination of the “story department” of the production house. Can’t blame them either, because film makers are known experts in creating close relatives of popular film characters. Some examples are ‘Son of Aladdin’ (1939), ‘Daughter of Hatimtai’ (1940 and 1955) or even ‘Son of Zimbo’ (1966). Poor Alladin or Hatimtai would not be even knowing that they had a son or a daughter !

However, as far as mythological film subjects are concerned, there is absolutely no need to imagine or cook up stories, because the old scriptures like Puraanas provide varied situations for making films. That is how there is a film called ‘Krishna Arjun Yuddh’ in 1934, 1945 and 1971, based on a story from Bhagwat Mahapuraan. We also have ‘Ram Hanuman Yuddh’ in 1957 and 1975, based on Valmiki Ramayan. There was even a strange sounding film called ‘Shankar, Seeta, Anusuya” in 1965, made on a story from Garud Puraan and then there was a film called ‘Vish Waman ‘ (1936) based on Waman Puran.

When I first came across this film ‘Shiv Kanya’ in the mid 50s, I was perplexed, because I was not aware of Shiv Ji having a daughter too ! I knew about Kartikeya and Ganesh. Then I looked into a book ‘Stories from Puraanas’ and I learnt about it. Stories in Puraanas have sometimes slightly different versions in different Puraans. For example, Ram Hanuman Yuddh is mentioned in Valmiki Ramayan and you will find a modified version in Vishnu Puraan also. This is because Puraanas are based on Shrutis and there are additions by many scholars over the centuries.

In my previous article on the song “Kat Gayi Waadon Mein“, I have talked about Mulkhraj Bhakri, writer, producer and lyricist from the Lahore film industry, who became one of the many victims of the country’s partition in 1947 . In Bombay (Mumbai), due to his hard work, he regained his position in the Hindi film industry.

In this article, I propose to talk about one more victim of partition who was born with a silver spoon in a Gujarati family settled in Karachi and actively connected with the Lahore film industry in the 1940s. I am not talking about Dalsukh M Pancholi but director, Ravindra Dave who happened to be his nephew. Let me unfold Ravindra Dave’s story.

hum kahin bhi hon
chale aayenge

What an extraordinary promise this is.

We had a small get together of music lovers, earlier in the day today. And for the day it is, part of our conversation revolved around Rafi Sb, and his persona, and his legacy. ‘God’s Own Man’ is the phrase expressed by one of the gathering. Certainly, all people are God’s people. But then some are special. They are ‘God’s Own People’. Humble and giving – the two traits that stand out as shining beacons in this industry that is famous for cutthroat competition, and the rule of money power. So much corruption and cruelty bleeds into it, and in turn, generates more cruelty and heartlessness.

What is common among Sulochana (real name: Ruby Mayer), Rose (Rose Musleah), Pramila (Easther Victoria Abraham), Sabita Devi (Iris Gasper) and Ramola Devi (Rachel Cohen)?

They all were Jews (almost all of them being Baghdadi Jews) hailing from Calcutta (Kolkata) and were star actresses in Hindi films during 1930s and 40s. Barring Ramola Devi, all of them started their filmy career with silent films. It is surprising that those days when oriental women were mostly relegated to the four walls of their homes, how these Baghdadi Jew actresses found their way to the film industry which was not regarded as a respectable profession even in their Middle-East culture. To understand this, it is necessary to go into the genesis of Baghdadi Jews in India.

Missing Films of 1960s – 34
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Yesterday, 25th July, was the anniversary of passing away of GS Kohli, the music director extraordinaire. He passed away in 1996, in Bombay.

A long time assistant music director to OP Nayyar, he had a short stint as an independent music director in the decade of 1960s. Despite a load of fantastic lilting songs in all his films – songs that became instant hits, very popular in their times, and still continue to be favourites of the lovers of the golden era of Hindi film music – he remained confined to B/C grade stunt films only. He continued to work as OPN’s assistant before, during and after his stint as an independent music director.
