Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 23

I could not send any write-up from my side on Sahir Ludhianvi’s birth anniversary this year on 08th March. However, I had shared few songs and had compiled an excel sheet on Sahir Ludhianvi’s filmography with the respective music directors, which I intend to use for future posts on the blog as and when possible.
While noting down the movies and number of songs from each movie, I came across the today’s songs or rather this ‘couplet recitation’ song from the movie ‘Dil Hi Toh Hai’ (1963). This song has been mentioned in the list of songs by Sahir Ludhianvi in Akshay Manwani’s book ‘Sahir Ludhianvi – The People’s Poet’. HFGK Vol IV (1961-1970) though does not mention this song in the list of songs under this movie. HFGK mentions ten songs in the movie which have already been posted on the blog.
When I searched for the audio/video of this extra song mentioned in Akshay Manwani’s book it was already available. So, we have an opportunity to bring this ‘couplet recitation’ on the blog today under ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ (since one song from this movie was posted on the blog on 23.04.2010). As this movie has already been ‘Yippeeee’ed’ on the blog the today’s song comes as ‘bonus’ for all of us to listen and enjoy.

As valentine day party songs go, this one is not really so big on the event. Except for the heart shaped balloons, there is no other indication of this being a valentine day song. Point to be noted is that, the blog seems to have ignored this occasion also, along with a host of other days that are specifically designated throughout the year. Whatsapp university does a quite adequate job of reminding us of all these days, be it mother’s day, father’s day, couple day, hug day, chocolate day to name a few. These are just the days which came readily to mind, because a few of them were during this past week.

Wishing everyone a Happy (last) Sunday of 2019. Last chance to be a TEEN for this century.
December saw a few posts from me and like last year I missed sending posts for a few birthdates for which I would have liked to write posts. But here is the song which I was saving up for today.
Today, 29th December we are thinking of THE FIRST SUPERSTAR of Bollywood. Born Jatin Khanna in 1942 in Amritsar and brought up by his adopted parents in Delhi and Bombay. He was a schoolmate of a person called Ravi Kapoor (Jeetendra). They grew up in the old Bombay region of Girgaon and attended school in Thakurdwar area. They were active on the stage in their school and college and even won prizes in Inter-college drama competitions.

“Insaaf”(1987) was produced by Nitin Manmohan and directed by Mukul S Anand for Aaditya Productions, Bombay. The movie had Vinod Khanna, Dimple Kapadia, Shammi, Suresh Oberoi, Shakti Kapoor, Krutthika Desai, Leena Das, Dalip Tahil, Madan Joshi, Vikram Gokhale, Gullu Balwinder, Gandhi, Amar Harish, Ghanshyam Rohera, Mahesh Raj, Mahesh Anand, Pradeep Singh Rawat, Manik Irani, Dinesh Hingoo etc in it.

What we have today is a repeat song of a very familiar and a very wonderful hit of its time, and yes, an all time favorite that seems to carry a timeless appeal for people in love. Let me wish a very Happy Deepawali to one and all. Let the festival light up our lives with lots of positivity love and peace. Let the new Samvat bring in prosperity all around. In all this let us try and make the life of everyone around us happy too. Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi and Laxmi Pooja starts the festive week which goes on to Bhai Dooj and ends with Chat Pooja. “Bade Dil Waala”(1983) was produced and directed by Bhappi Sonie for Bhappie Sonie Productions, Bombay.This “social” movie had Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Sarika, Aruna irani, Jagdeep, Madan Puri, Kalpana Aiyyar, Roopesh Kumar, Bharat Bhushan etc in it.

These three songs of Majrooh saab and some more are of the eminence that would have been categorised as poems of repute if they were not film songs.
Remembering Majrooh Sultanpuri (01/10/1919 – 24/05/2000) today on his birth centenary. In fact, Majrooh Saab’s birth centenary celebrations commenced on September 30, 2018 with a 2-day National Seminar on his contributions to Hindi films and the Urdu literature which was held at the Kalina campus of Mumbai University. Thereafter, a few more such celebrations were also held elsewhere. For instance, Hindustan Academy celebrated his centenary at Prayagraj on August 19, 2019. Paasbaan-e-Adab also arranged Majrooh Saab’s birth centenary celebrations on December 22, 2018 at Yeshwantrao Chavan Auditorium in Mumbai in which his non-filmy ghazals were show-cased in the form of songs by upcoming singers. In Delhi, Jashn-e-Rekhta scheduled a special session on Majrooh Saab in its annual conference in December 14, 2018. I am sure many more such celebrations would have taken place all over India.

Today (28 september 2019) is the 90th birthday of Lata Mangeshkar (DoB 28 september 1929).
When one discusses songs sung by Lata, we mostly discuss all time classics, songs that have stood the test of time, songs that have become iconic etc. And there are hundreds of such songs.
Also, she was very particular about the kind of songs that she would sing. She would look down upon songs with lyrics that she found objectionable. Instead of facing her ire, music directors would often take the easy way out and get these songs sung by some other singer. And the major beneficiary was her own sister Asha Bhonsle. Most cabaret songs sung by shady female characters (often Helen, Bindu etc: ) in the movie went to Asha Bhonsle. On some occasions, some music directors who had the necessary connections with Lata ji (viz Laxmikant Pyarelal) managed to convince her to sing such songs. That is how we found her agreeing to sing a few cabaret songs for Laxmikant Pyarelal.
