Today we introduce the till now missing movie ‘Vishnu Puraan’ to join the movies of ‘1973’ on the blog.
“Vishnu Puraan-1973” was directed by Shridhar Prasad for ‘Shibani Pictures, Bombay’. It was produced by Bhanu Bannerjee.
“Vishnu Puraan” was a mythological movie inspired from the ‘folk tales’ and ‘legends’ of our country, and especially the ‘Katha Saritsaagar’ written by Somdev and the play ‘Swapnvasavadattam’ written by Mahakavi Bhas. Today’s song is a lovely duet song sung by Mohd Rafi and Radha Saluja. I guess this is the first song by Radha Saluja on the blog. I am not aware much about her singing. As per the details available on online sources her voice appeared in at least three songs in Hindi films. One of these songs is being presented today.

74th Republic Day on 26th January, 2023
We have all heard this ghazal, in the form of patriotic songs, songs with nationalistic flavour in various films made on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, and some not made on him. Such is the power of this inquilabi poetry, that people seemed to have recited and memorised this one through generations, when there was no digitalization of data and published material was not available for cheap. Or not easily accessible in remote areas. The ghazal has gone hand in hand with ‘mera rang de basanti chola’ through out history of independent India, in movies and beyond. Be it hindi films or regional language films, obviously Punjabi movies. But I am prepared to not be surprised to find these two songs in other regional language films, like Bengali, Marathi and others.

Today’s song is from the film Milan-1958.
Films having titles as Milan were made in 1946, 1958, 1967, and 1994. Then there was Milan ki Aag-1991, Milan ki Pyaas-1989, Milan ki Raat-1967 and Milan Talkies-2019. Even during the Silent era 2 such films were made, one in 1924 and the other in 1929. Milan-1946 had a historical value as it was made in Hindi and Bangla and was based on Tagore’s novel ” Noukadubi”. This was a Debut film for 2 Heroines, namely Meera Mishra and Ranjana- both opposite Dilip Kumar. The more famous film was Milan-1967, starring Sunil Dutt and Nutan and it was a remake of a hit Telugu film ” Mooga Manasulu”-1963. Its song ‘ Saawan ka mahina’ by Mukesh and Lata was very famous. It had a ‘rebirth’ story.
