Mohammed Rafi: The incomparable (II) – Song No. 17
————————————————————————–
20/08/2020 – Death anniversary of Avinash Vyas
———————————————————————————–
The names of both Avinash Vyas and Bharat Vyas remind everyone of mythological movies and their bhajans and religious songs. On this death anniversary, I found a song, a Rafi solo with a difference. It is nothing like a bhajan or a mythological situation song, but appears to be roadside tamasha category song.
This is a fun song from the film Aadhi roti (1957). This movie has actors like Prem Adeeb, Master Bhagwan, Sulochana Latkar, Daisy Irani and Manorama. The songs are composed by Avinash Vyas and written by (unrelated) Bharat Vyas. As per the Rafi excel sheet, this song is performed on screen by Master Bhagwan. It figures as it does sound like a Bhagwan Dada song.

Every 23rd January we pay our tributes to the great visionary, a courageous and brave leader of our freedom struggle Netaji Subhashchandra Bose.
All of us are aware of his biographical details and details about his fight for the freedom of people of India and how he led his own fight in the way he thought was the best way to deal with the ‘British Empire’ then.
In one of my earlier posts on the blog here we have also discussed about the various movies based on the life of Netaji Subhashchandra Bose.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 22
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
I present here a repeat song that is quite different from the string of songs in this series so far. I shall begin by introducing the original song.
The original song is from the 1953 film – ‘Hamdard’. The song has been written by Majrooh Sultanpuri, and the music composition is by Anil Biswas. The original song is in the voice of Manna Dey, and it is already posted on the blog a good eight years ago. That post can be viewed at “Tera Haath Haath Mein Aa Gaya”.
The repeat song, this time appearing in the film ‘Tu Nahin Aur Sahi’ from 1960. The song is the same, but for the latter film, it has been re-recorded. The music director of the latter film is Ravi. The second recording is different, both with regards to the composition, as well as the singing voice. The latter song has been recorded in the voice of Rafi Sb, in a tune that is quite different from the original.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 21
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
OK, yes, this one too.
And I am very sure most of us would not have heard, or even heard of, the third stanza in this song. Ah yes, that is the wonderful bonus we have from the repeat use of this song. I was not even aware of the existence of a third stanza of this song, before my dear friend Ahsaan Bhai (of Hapur) introduced me to this repeat song in the 1978 film ‘Nasbandi’. That was a few months ago. In wayward manner, i.e. without any proper identification etc., this song is available on you tube. And unless one is aware of what one is looking for, one is bound to miss it.

Today is the 31st of July.
A date that has an immediate connect with most HFM lovers, for it signifies to them the passing away of one of Hindi film industry’s biggest legends.
Mohammad Rafi, or, as many (including myself) refer to him with the greatest respect, Rafisaab.
Today is his 40th death anniversary – and all of us here on the blog, and I’m sure millions around the world, remember him with great love, affection and respect.

Hullo Atuldom
31st July, was that date in the monsoon of 1980, when the favourite singer of an entire generation left this world without any warning. There are anecdotes about the happenings of that date which keep surfacing now and then. We have heard that he was recording for Laxmikant -Pyarelal that day, a duet with Lata Mangeshkar, and was asked to stay back to record a songlet (if there is such a word) which was to play at the end of the movie and the words of that:
Tere aane ki aas hai dost
shaam phir kyun udhaas hai dost
mehki mehki phiza yeh kehti hain
tu kahin aas paas hai dost
tu kahin aas paas hain dost
Seem like written for remembering this legend called Mohammad Rafi.
