The first thing that many younger people may notice in this song is that Rakesh Roshan, the father of the present day superstar Hritik Roshan ( but to me the son of music director Roshan) had ample hair on his head unlike the takla that he is these days. Rakesh Roshan was just managing to keep his nose above water as an actor those days, and this movie “Kaamchor” helped his cause a great deal.

I have heard this song and I liked it. Of course I had no idea which movie it was from and who were the composer, lyricist, singer, actor etc. It turns out that the movie is called Criminal (1995) and it was a remake of some Telugu movie, and perhaps that too was called Criminal.
The song is quite hummable. Credit says singers are Kumar Shanu and Alka Yagnik. I can identify Kumar Shanu’s voice, It appears to me that he tried to sing this Hindi song with South Indian accent, trying to copy the voice of S. P. Balasubramaniam . No idea why he tried to do that. The female voice did not sound like Alka Yagnik by any stretch of imagination, so I checked and gathered that the voice belongs to K S Chitra.

Young kids growing up in India learn as much of their vocabulary from family members and friends as from Bollywood movies and songs. I learnt the meaning of “ladki pasand karna” for the first time when I heard my mother advising her brother (mama for me) to get married ( “Shaadi kar lo. Koi ladki pasand kar lo”).
As if on cue, this song ” maine ek ladki pasand kar li” started blaring on loudspeakers after a few days. And thanks to my newfound knowledge ( gained by overhearing my mother), I knew the meaning of the phrase “ladki pasand kar li”.

I am not much impressed with the present day Bollywood music, and so I do not follow it. Once, while travelling by bus, I was subjected to some songs blaring from the audio system of the vehicle. Most songs appeared typically “modern” read “trash” to my ears, but one song caught my ears. It went “main yahan hoon yahan”. I wondered how such a catchy tune, so reminiscent of music in the era betwen 1950-70 got created after 2000 ?
This song lingered in my mind. When I went home and googled it, I found that it was from “Veer Zaara”. Wow ! So that was the explanation for this tune. Veer Zaara uses tunes that Madan Mohan had left unused when he died in 1975.

This song is from circa 1970s, picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore on a hill station. Do you say “mausam” ? Think again.
This song is from a movie that was released one year prior to “mausam”. Lata Mangeshkar is indeed the female singer, but the male singer here is Kishore Kumar, and the music director is R D Burman. For the record, R D Burman could do no wrong in those days. But the same could not be said about the makers of the movies in which he gave music.

It is one of the immortal ghazals of Bollywood. When one of the biggest music directors of that time, Naushad, heard the ghazals of Anpadh ( other ghazal being ” hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo”), he found out who the composer was, and then phoned Madan Mohan and took an appointment with him. When Naushad met Madan Mohan, Naushad said that these two ghazals by Madan Mohan were equal to all the compositions that he ( Naushad) had ever created.

This was one song that I found extremely romantic on its day. The lyrics say it all, and say it directly, no beating about the bush. And as a kid not even in my teens, I certainly loved such direct approach.
It was supposed to be a timepass song, but I like this song even today. This song shows that even such songs which are not aiming for immortality could become memorable if they are carefully crafted. Those were the days when Rajesh Khanna was on his ascendancy, and whatever he touched, turned to gold, and this movie “Aan Milo Sajna” was no exception.

Boys have been wooing girls for many generations, and despite cultural differences, modus operandi remains the same across all cultures. It is the male who has to act, and the female reacts. And a fine delicate balance must be struck. The male should not be so shy that he would not even approach the female, nor should he be too crude to turn the girl off. The usual Indian way, to launch a trial baloon, and to test the waters to see that the conditions are favourable for the approach- it is the recommended way that still works, as it did 50 years ago.

One of the most romantic songs from early 1970s. Featuring Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman, this number tugged at your heartstrings, if you lived through that era. The feelings and emotions involved when you are in love with a girl is so wonderfully penned by Anand Bakshi, and so wonderfully sung by Kishore Kumar on R D Burman’s tune. All the people featuring in this song were the creme de la creme of Bollywood world in their fields at that time. And their teamwork has resulted into this evergreen, unforgettable, romantic song.

We are used to larger than life portrayal of characters in movies, which bear little resemblance to ordinary real lives that most of us lead. Sometimes,we get to watch some down to earth movies, that tell the tale of our own lives, rather than that of supermen and superwomen.
