Sometimes, things can’t get more rare than this. As we look for rare combination of artists, and especially singers, we come across combinations where two artists have worked together in a song, once or maybe twice in the entire history of Indian cinema. This song today, is one such song. It is a duet, rather I should correct myself, it is a trio of singers. There are two female voices, and one male voice. The male voice is not identified, even in the Geet Kosh listings. The female voices are Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano. And the year is 1948.

We all know the meaning of the word “Bhaand”; for those not conversant with colloquial Hindi; googling the word throws up meanings —Clown, Mimic, Comedian etc. “Bhaands” are also traditionally folk entertainers which might mean a storyteller, minstrels, dancers, actors, impressionists etc. Most bhaands belong to families that are engaged in folk entertainment as their hereditary profession, their specific art forms vary greatly by region, community and language. The term bhaand itself can also mean either a specific dramatic story or an entire form/school of drama.

This is the story of a ‘self-proprietorship firm’ uniquely named ‘Atul Song A Day’ (hereinafter called the Company) which was set up on July 19, 2008 by Atul Besra. In his venture, he received encouragement from Raja, his Cricforum friend. The mission was to produce at least one song a day. However, due to abundant supply of ‘raw material’ and the demand for the ‘finished product’, the production was increased to more than one song a day within 3 months of its existence.

Today’s song is from the film Mast Qalandar-55. It is sung by Shamshad Begum, Rafi and Master Sonik alongwith chorus. The mukhada of the song ” Mast qalandar dama dam” is quite a misleading one, as it has nothing to do with famous Punjabi/Sindhi qawali Dama dam mast qalandar. The phrase has been used here to describe a carefree man. This seems to be a street dance, sung to entertain the onlookers.

As mentioned in my previous post I had to travel in the East for some official work as a part of some strategic planning at my work place.
And at that time i.e. around second/third week of May, there was a discussion at my work place, that I could also be deputed for some official work at Chennai in near future.

This article is the 12100th song post in the blog.
Today, with this post, we arrive at the 12,100th post on this blog. That’s 121 centuries that this blog has clocked so far. The mind continues to boggle.
As a person who’s seen this blog from day one (from the time “mile na phool” was posted as the very first song on this blog), I feel elated everytime we reach a milestone. I still remember when Atul posted the 100th and then 200th and so on. Each one was an occasion for celebration. Because each one was a marker of progress on a journey that we knew would be a long (and highly enjoyable) one. We have done that 121 times now – and I think I speak for many of us when I say, ye dil maange more. :-).
