“Mela” (1948) was a blockbuster movie of its time. It was a Wadia Films Production. It was produced by S U Sunny and Hila Wadia and directed by S U Sunny. The movie had Dilip Kumar, Nargis, Jeevan, Roopkamal, Amar, Rehman, Baby Zubaida, Nurjehan, Chandabai, Allaudin, Khalil, Abbas, Maqbul Jr., Gulam Mohmed Jr. etc in it.

“Dillagi” (1949) was a Kardar Productions movie. It was produced and directed by A R Kardar. The movie had Shyam, Suraiya, Sharada, Amar, Shyam Kumar, Amir Banu, Chandabai, Yasmin etc in it.

“Elaan” (1947) was a Meboob Production. It was produced and directed by Mehboob Khan. The movie had Surendra, Munawwar Sultana, Zebunissa, Agha, Shahnawaz, W. M. Khan, Leela Mishra, Rita, Shaheda, Subhasini, Reehan, Mohammad Afzal etc in it.

I was aware of Behzad Lucknowi as a lyricist for the films mainly of the 40s. I found that he suddenly vanished from Hindi film industry after he wrote lyrics for a few songs in films released in 1951. Last week, I accidentally came across an audio clip of a ghazal sung by none other than Ghulam Haider from the film ‘Zamindar’(1942). This beautiful ghazal was written by Behzad Lucknowi. I was so touched by this poignant ghazal that I started looking for his other songs penned by him for Hindi films. Two songs among a few already covered in this blog were very familiar to me but I was not aware that those two songs were written by Behzad Lucknowi. Those two songs were : zindaa huun is tarah kigham-e-zindagi nahin, tumhaare bulaane ko ji chaahataa hai. After listening to these songs and the ghazal from the film referred to above, there was an urge in me to know more about Behzad Lucknowi. As it turned out, he was an interesting personality.

Today (3 august) is the birth anniversary of Shakeel Badayuni (3 august 1916- 20 april 1970). The combination of Shakeel Badayuni as a lyricist as Naushad as a music director was one of the most common and most successful lyricist-music director combinations of the golden era of Hindi movies. They worked together in as many as thirty movies.
