Today, India is celebrating the 64th anniversary of freedom from the British rule. A movement that lasted almost 100 years – starting with disjoint uprisings against the Britishers, and the first coordinated war of independence in 1857, the struggle and resistance was carried forward by many stalwarts across the entire country. There was the nationwide resistance movement through political and social disobedience. Besides, there were other complementary movements, that added impetus to this struggle for freedom. Groups of young people, charged with the objective of bringing to end the oppressive reign of an alien government, came together in various cities in different parts of the country, and conducted local resistance and struggle. Think of a music director from Punjab, preparing music for a film whose story is set in Bombay. And one of the songs is based on the local folk dance of Maharashtra. And guess what you will get? A Lavani based song spiced with exclamations of ‘haishaa’. And if you don’t believe me, well just go ahead and listen to this wonderful folk dance song from the 1957 film Miss Bombay. “Aar Paar” (1954) was a milestone in the history of Hindi movies. It was one of the first suspense thrillers in Hindi movies. The music of this movie broke new grounds. The music was a breathtaking combination of Indian and Western influences. The same could be said about the picturisation of the movie and its songs. It is quite obvious that the makers of this movie had drawn inspiration liberally from western movies and from western music.

Public have a se idea about the roles that the two genders play and they are used to the same roles being played by them in Hindi movies too. But sometimes movie makers come up with situations when the two genders behave in a rather unusual manner not expected of that gender and that makes amusing viewing for the public and subsequently more visits to the cinema hall for the movie makers.
