Ashok Kumar or Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly (his birth name) would have been 103 if he had been there. Born in 1911, in Bhagalpur Bengal presidency was a laboratory assistant at Bombay Talkies when he was offered a role in 1936 in Jeevan Nayya. Thus began his six-decade long career. Of course by the time I became aware of Ashok Kumar, the actor, he was past doing hero roles and into playing a father or grand father or some such character. But to give credit where due his name would always appear first in the title cards of all these movies. Whether it was the grandpa in “Anuraag”, “Anurodh”, “Khoobsurat” or many such movies. He was very charming in the brief role of Air Force officer in “Aradhana”. He was Vijay Anand’s “Jewel Thief” as well as Brij Sadanah’s “Raja” along with Pran as “Rana” in “Victoria No: 203”. After the 1973 hit Victoria No: 203 this pair was repeated many times.

“You see sir, I can walk English, I can talk English, I can laugh English.”
“Aaj khush toh bahut honge tum”
“Main aaj bhi phenke huye paise nahin uthata”
“Sar zameene Hindustan, aa salaam walekum”. (Nahmji I know I may have written the salutation wrong, but I hope my intention has been conveyed)
These are some powerful dialogues of Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 72 yesterday(11 october 2014). He was a horrible dancer when he made his debut in movies. There is this anecdote which keeps playing on the TV channels where Aruna Irani his co actor in “Bombay To Goa” (1971/72) has narrated how Mehmood the maker of the movie had instructed every one not to laugh at any mistakes Amitabh would commit in the dance sequences. She also goes on to appreciate how over the years he managed to shake a leg or two without making a buffoon of himself. Infact a lot of later year actors who try to ape him on the way to stardom and are not comfortable dancers, also ape his dance steps. And there were many of that breed of actors in the late 70s, 80s and 90s.

I am sure that quite a few regulars of this blog must be wondering why an Amitabh Bachchan song had not appeared so far, seeing that today is his 72nd birthday (DOB 11 october 1942). As it is, I typically work up from older songs to newer ones in a day. I have discussed four songs of 1940s and 1950s today whereas Amitabh Bachchan made his debut in Hindi movies only in late 1960s. 🙂

On October 10th 2014, the frozen in time diva Bhanurekha Ganeshan (the birth name of the person we know as just Rekha) turns 60. I had a tough time trying to select a song for the occasion. At first I thought I will do the usual of finding an Amitabh- Rekha song as their birthdates are 10th and 11th October. Then on going through “the list of songs movie wise” and comparing it with the list on MYSWAR.com I realized that the song sung by Rekha in her own voice is still to be posted.
