Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 17
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1979 – Solo)
This song by Rafi song has been a very dramatic reunion for me, and very that too, very recently. Although 1979, but who would even pay an iota of attention to a film titled ‘Badmaashon Ka Badmaash’. Till just two three weeks ago, I was not even aware that a film by this name exists. However, this song is one of the category which I call ‘heard-just-once-o-but-never-forgotten’. Times were fairly into the second half of seventies. We had moved into our own home by this time. And my family still did not own a TV. My mamma ji (maternal uncle) and his family had moved in with us. And the extended family was sharing their TV.

1970s, especially the earlier years of the decade was the time when I was at my precocious best as a music lover. I tended to remember the details of all popular songs of those days.

Today (23 september 2014) is the death anniversary of Rajinder Krishan, a versatile and prolific lyricist of the golden era. He made his debut as a lyricist in late 1940s and he was supposedly past his prime by 1970s, but he continued to pen some superb songs even in 1970s. 1973 was a year when Rajinder Krishan wrote songs in “Banarasi Baabu”, “Jwaar Bhaata”, “Kahaani Kismat Ki” and “Blackmail” ! People loved the songs of these movies, majority of them (including myself) without knowing the details of these songs.

Prem naam hai mera. . .
Prem Chopra. . .
Thus happens the surprise introduction of this villain cum character artist, in the film ‘Bobby’ (1973). I call it a surprise because his name does not appear in the credits at the start of the film. ‘Bobby’ was one of the films that I got to see on the big screen, with family. Prem Chopra would be a familiar artist in the nascent mind of the school going ‘yours truly’, thanks to films like ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Upkar’. And so, when abruptly and unexpectedly on to the shining tinsel screen, appears this familiar face and the familiar voice, chewing on a blade of grass, and making his presence felt in a very lewd and unexpected manner, I remember I was aghast – “arre, is ka to naam bhi nahin hai, ye kaise aa gaya?”. For a split second, the thought did cross my mind – “cinema waalon ne koi galat reel laga di hai”. But immediately as the film continued, that thought would be discarded. “Achhaa, aisa bhi hota hai. B’gair naam ke bhi actor film mein aa jaate hain”.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 16
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1978 – Duet)
And with this duet, another film from 1978 makes a debut on the blog. The film is ‘Damaad’ directed by Raja Rakshit. This song I would not categorize as obscure. It was heard relatively more often on the radio, and continues to be alive in memory. And what a gem of a song this one also is.
