“Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) is by now an obscure movie, but I was aware of this movie when it was released. Seeing that it was a non Amitabh Bachchan movie, I considered it a B grade movie, not worth my time. Nevertheless, I was not averse to watch a movie if I could get to watch it free. When I used to return back from college in the evening, I came down by walk, which had the added advantage that I came across most movie halls of Ranchi that were located on a single road called Main Road. The newest cinema hall, which also happened to be located closest to my residence was called Sujata Cinema. I found out that while one needed to buy tickets while the movie began, no one checked tickets after half time. So one could wait for the half time when movie watchers came out to buy peanuts, popcorn etc. When they went back inside, their tickets was not checked again. So it was possible to enter the hall in the second half and sit in a vacant seat and watch the second half of the movie. I was able to watch a few flop movies (with very few ticket buyers for them) this way. If my memory is not playing tricks, this movie “Sarkaari Mehmaan”(1978) was one such movie. I entered the movie hall after second half, watched the movie and left the hall after THE END along with other bonafide movie watchers who had the misfortune of buying tickets of this movie.

“Paanch Dost”(1974) was directed by Vijay for Chanda Films International, Bombay. The movie had Vijaylalita, Krishna, Prabhakar Reddy, Jagga Rao, Anand, Tyagraj, JyotiLaxmi etc in it. From the cast, it is clear that it was a South Indian language movie that was dubbed into Hindi. In addition to dubbing the dialogues into Hindi, the makers of the movie got the songs too resung into Hindi. There were four female solos in the movie, all sung by Vani Jairam. From the lyrics, all the songs appear club dance/ bar dance/ cabaraat dance kind of songs with Chaalu kind of lyrics. I wonder why the movie is then titled “Paanch Dost” ?
