Today 7th October 2025 is the eighty-fifth birthday of music composer and singer Usha Khanna (born on 7th October 1941).

On this occasion I am presenting song that is sung as well as composed by her.

This song is from the 1979 movie ‘Meri Beewee Ki Shaadi’. It was directed by Rajat Rakshit for AVM Arts International, Bombay. It was a social movie. The cast of this movie included Amol Palekar, Ranjeet, Ashok Saraf, C.S. Dubey, Maruti, Datta Bhatt, Jankidas, R. Verma, M. Naidu, Ashok Narang, Baba Naik, Siraj, Susheela Raut, Pramod Naidu, Chanda, Anuradha, Dilip Kulkarni (debutant) and others. Neelu Phule and Namita Chandra had special appearances in this movie.

#Yippeeee to Aanchal-1980 #
———————————————

In this post I am presenting a nice ‘morning’ /‘bhor’ song’ from the movie ‘Aanchal-1980’.

Picturisation shows a big house in a vilage where most of the main characters in the movie reside. Rakhee is lip syncing this good morning song in the voice of Lata Mangeshkar. Two decades ago, we had Meena Kumari lip syncing in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice another good morning song ‘jyoti kalash chhalke.’

Like what Meena Kumari was shown doing in that iconic “Bhaabhi Ki Choodiyaan”(1961) song, this “Aanchal”(1980) song shows Rakhee playing her role as an ‘ideal Bhaarteey Naari’ performing early morning household chores such as spraying water (mixed with ‘gobar’), ‘tulsi kee pooja’, feeding the birds, extracting water for household works from the pump, waking up other members of the household, preparing them for going to their work etc.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Happy Birthday to Shailendra Singh)#
——————————————-——————————

Today 4th October’2025 is the 74th birthday of Singer and actor Shailendra Singh. He was born on 4th October’1952 in Mumbai (Bombay then). Most of us are aware that Shailendra Singh made his debut as a singer with the movie ‘Bobby’ in ‘1973’ which was produced and directed by the great showman of Hindi Cinema Raj Kapoor.

The songs of ‘Bobby’ became very popular then and Shailendra Singh was nominated for the ‘Best Male Playback Singer’ for the song ‘main shaayar to nahin’. But the he didn’t win for that. He got his first acting break for the movie ‘Do Jaasoos – 1975’. (Later on, he acted in his father’s home production ‘Agreement-1980’, and he had done guest appearance in ‘Naukar-1979’ and Mehmood’s – ‘Janta Hawaldar-1979’. He acted in a Bengali film as a hero with Aparna Sen and the movie was ‘Ajosro Dhanyobaad (Many Many Thanks).

There have been two Hindi movies with the title “Ustaad Pedro” that were released in 1951 and 1971 respectively.

These two movies had the same title because they were produced by the same man viz Sheikh Mukhtar and he had played the title role in both the movies. One can easily guess that this story line was close to his heart so he decided to repeat the same story line with the very same movie title. Seeing that there was a 20 year gap between the two movies, the actors in the 1971 necessarily had to be different.

“Ustaad Pedro”(1971) was produced by Sheikh Mukhtar and directed by Chaand for Time Life Films, Bombay. The movie had Sheikh Mukhtar, Meena Roy, Jeewan, Padma Khannaa, Asha Nadkarni, Kundan, Raka, Shyam Kumar, Helen, Junior Mehmood, Master Dingu, Sadiq, Hameed, Kaku, Fazlu, Bihari, B A Baghi, Anil Dutt (new face) etc in it. One can notice that the lead actress in this movie was someone called Meena Roy. Few people have any idea who she was. In contrast, the lead actress of “Ustaad Pedro”(1951) was a famous actress of her time viz Begam Para.

Today is the last day of the ten-day long ‘Durga Pooja Utsav’ or ‘Navraatree festival’ of this year 2025. The effigies of the demon Ravana are being burnt all over the country to celebrate the victory of Good over the evil. The ten day long staging of Ram Leela will also come to an end today.

Ram Leela is performed in many parts of our country. I was thinking of the past decades from the mid-eighties onwards and I realised that many changes have taken place in the presentation of Raamleelaa thanks to the advancement of technology with time. This can be noticed when the scene on the stage changes from one part to other, where the set up is required to be changed. In olden times the curtains were rolled down to change the backdrop of the characters performing on stage. My guess is that this would have undergone a sea change nowadays where we have technology to help us.

People born before nineties who would have attended Raamleelaa shows in their town or villages must have been witness to funny situations arising during the plays because of various reasons such as forgetting the dialogues, or disruptions due to sudden power-cut etc. These unplanned events during the show would have created situations of laughter and comedy for the audiences.

Hullo Atuldom

Wishing all the followers of the blog a Happy Dassehra. Happy Vijayadashmi. A day which is the culmination of the Sharada Navaratri. Navaratri means nine nights & Vijayadashmi is the 10th day when all the festivities reach a finale.

Much of North India would have had Raam-Leela as part of the festivities & we will witness Ravan-Dahan on the 10th day.

In West India we have the Devi installed in the form of Ambemaa with Aarthis, Garba & Dandiya forming the part of celebrations. Recently, I learnt that the Dandiya-sticks are representative of the weapons that were used by Ambemaa (Durga Maa) in her battle against the Rakshasaa “Mahishasura”.

‘Manzilein Aur Bhee Hain’ (1974) was produced by Johny Bakshi and was directed by Mahesh Bhatt who also wrote the story. The dialogues were written by the veteran theatre personality, Satyadev Dube. The cast included Kabir Bedi and Prema Narayan in the lead roles supported by Gulshan Arora, Purnima, Sudhir, Mac Mohan, Mukesh Bhatt, Shah Durrani, Kirti Kumar, Viju Khote, Ranvir Raj, Uma Dutt etc. Both Johny Bakshi and Mahesh Bhatt made their debuts as producer and director, respectively. Both had known each other while working for Raj Khosla as Assistant Director/Production Controller.

The film was completed in 1972 but ran into problems with Censor Board for about 15 months. In an interview, Mahesh Bhatt revealed that for Censor Board, the film’s two fugitives’ polyandrous relationship with a woman who is their partner in crime amounted to undermining the institution of marriage. Finally, the film got the Censor Certificate on August 13, 1974, as an ‘Adult’ film with cuts. The film had a limited theatrical released on September 27, 1974. The VCD of the film I watched, has a 2016 Censor Certificate with major cuts to make it fit for public viewing under parental guidance. The theme of the film is that there are alternative paths to becoming a criminal who lives under the constant fear of death.
